It’s too early to panic but I would feel better if I knew the Rams were closely monitoring ILB options. Feeling a little exposed with only Littelton as a solid experienced player.

What i'd like to see in our next pre-season game against Dallas :

Narrow the focus of our OLine, ... meaning restrict Demby to LG, RG & some center, forget OT for now. Have Edwards stick to LT & LG duties and Evans to RG & RT. Get Noteboom & Allen work on at least the first 2 possessions of the game.

More John Wolford, less Brandon Allen.
More Nsimba Webster, less JoJo Natson & Austin Proehl, ... at both WR & PR/KR.

More Greg Gaines at NT, more Sebastian Joseph-Day at 3Tech.
Get Troy Hill involved, more Kevin Peterson & David long Jr., less Dom Hatfield & Dont'e Deayon.
Less Taylor Rapp (He's already proven himself, don't risk injury), more Steven Parker.

With Ebukam taking it easy and Ogbonnia Okoronkwo & Justin lawler out, great opportunities for Josh Carraway & Landis Durham to continue shining.

While generally I appreciate the pre-season mix for checking out & testing the newer young players, i'd really like to see a bit more focus on guys that performed better in game 1. And lets get Noteboom, B.Allen & Troy Hill some snaps, they need it. jmo.
I agree. Kromer needs to find some good OG's. Like you said I would remove Jamil Demby from the OT duties from this point on. Rams look to be well-endowed @ both OT post with Whitworth/ Havenstein/ Noteboom/ Edwards & Evans...even Chandler Brewer had a solid game @ RT. Rams will need two new starting OG next season.

I wouldn't put Evens in that group. At least not at LT. He was getting beat like a drum by a scrub

Rookie report card: Grading Rams' draft picks vs. Raiders
usatsi_13188691.jpg

By: Cameron DaSilva | 17 minutes ago

There won’t be any rookie starters for the Los Angeles Rams this season, but their draft class will still make an impact as role players. Many of them were treated as first-stringers in the team’s preseason opener against the Raiders on Saturday night, getting the nod as starters.

Here’s how the Rams’ rookies performed in their first game action.

S Taylor Rapp: A

Rapp shined against the Raiders, standing out as one of the best players on the field. He made two tackles and broke up one pass, showing good speed, range and physicality in his preseason debut. Sean McVay heaped praise on him in the aftermath of the game, too, saying he was “a really bright spot” against Oakland.

He had a big impact in only 22 plays, proving why he was deserving of the Rams’ top pick in the draft. Rapp is going to get on the field early this season.

RB Darrell Henderson: C+

There was a lot of hype and anticipation surrounding Henderson leading up to this game, but he was limited by Oakland’s defense. He finished as the Rams’ leading rusher, but only with 13 yards on six carries. Two of those rush attempts went for 7 yards each, so Henderson went backwards on his other four carries cumulatively.

There wasn’t a lot of running room and Henderson showed good quickness, but it was an underwhelming debut for the rookie. The Rams clearly wanted to get him involved as he touched the ball on seven of his 20 snaps.

CB David Long: B-

Long got beat on a deep pass down the sideline, failing to get his head around to the ball. It was a great catch by the receiver, and fairly tight coverage by Long, but he played the receiver instead of the ball. Overall, it was a relatively uneventful night for the rookie cornerback.

He only played 25 snaps (34 percent) so it’s not as if he was on the field for the entire game, which limited his opportunities.

OL Bobby Evans: D

Evans really struggled against the Raiders. He played every single snap, which is never a good sign for a player in the first preseason game. The coaching staff clearly wasn’t satisfied with the way he was playing, keeping him out there to give him as many chances as possible. He allowed a sack to Arden Key while lined up at left tackle and allowed another pressure while at right tackle, struggling in pass protection as the game went on.

NT Greg Gaines: B+

Gaines only played 18 snaps, but he won a few reps when given one-on-one opportunities. He drew a holding penalty and pressured the quarterback on another play, showing good quickness and technique on the interior. Joseph-Day hasn’t necessarily done anything to relinquish his lead at nose tackle, but Gaines stood out on a couple occasions in limited action Saturday night.

OL David Edwards: C-

Edwards played left and right tackle against Oakland as the Rams continue to figure out who fits in best at each offensive line spot, but neither position was better than the other. He had a false start and got flagged for holding in what was a rough performance for the rookie offensive lineman. His roster spot isn’t in any danger, but Edwards has to play better next time out against the Cowboys.

S Nick Scott: C

Scott’s primary contributions will come on special teams, but the Rams gave him some playing time at safety, too. His speed is apparent, but he missed an open-field tackle on a receiver which led to additional yards after the catch. The Rams don’t necessarily need him to contribute much on defense with Taylor Rapp and Marqui Christian backing up the starters, but anything he can do at safety is a bonus.

LB Dakota Allen: B-

Allen was out there for 25 snaps and made four total tackles (one solo). Just the fact that he played was a good sign because he was previously battling an injury that limited his work in practice, so this performance must be viewed through a somewhat different scope. He wasn’t perfect in his debut Saturday but he was often where he needed to be and got off blocks fairly well.

Los Angeles Rams versus Oakland Raiders: Good, bad, and ugly

Let’s have a look at which players performed well. Could QB John Wolford work his way onto the team?

Preseason week one likely didn’t go as planned for the Los Angeles Rams, though there were still positives when evaluating player performances. We’ll take a look at the guys who fall under three separate categories: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Let’s get into it:

Good
WR KhaDarel Hodge

If you thought Hodge didn’t have a shot to crack the 53-man roster, it might be time to adjust. Yes, the Rams are absolutely loaded at wide receiver, meaning the logjam represents almost no playing time whatsoever at the position. Though, for the second preseason in a row now, Hodge has proven he absolutely belongs in the NFL. His crisp route running and strong hands led to three receptions for 48 yards, with the potential for another chunk of yardage on an intermediate route that QB Brandon Allen overthrew.

QB John Wolford

Wolford came out of absolutely nowhere. As the last quarterback on the roster, Wolford hardly got any playing time, though he did the absolute most with his minimal time. Wolford went 6/8 for 54 passing yards in the game, with another 12 rushing yards. The stats aren’t eye popping, though Wolford displayed a distinct ability to keep his eyes downfield, read through his progressions, and deliver accurate passes to receivers’ hands. Not only that, but he looked composed the entire time throughout.

S Steven Parker

Parker was one of the Rams’ defenders who stood out as he pulled down an interception and long return. Parker was also active as a tackler, chipping in four by himself. His speed is evident, and even though the Rams are stacked at safety, Parker could very well spend the season on the practice squad again.

CB Darious Williams

Williams was probably the best player for the Rams all night. He was consistently in great coverage, he made multiple plays on the ball, and he lead the team with six solo tackles. Williams will have a tough time cracking the 53-man roster. If he doesn’t make this roster, the tape he’s putting forward will be sure to land him a job somewhere.

S Taylor Rapp

Rapp’s first action on an NFL field was a success. The Rams elected to use Rapp in man coverage on tight ends and in the box as a subpackage linebacker majority of his time on the field, which is likely to be his role in his rookie season. Rapp displayed exactly what he showed in college with a clutch tackle on 3rd-and-medium (short of the first-down marker) as well as another pass breakup on fellow rookie WR Hunter Renfrow.

DT Greg Gaines

Sebastian Joseph-Day may have garnered the start as the first-team nose tackle, though it was Gaines who made the biggest impact. Gaines was routinely knifing through the offensive line and finding himself in the backfield of the Raiders. It was evident Gaines outplayed SJD, potentially gaining some ground in the battle for the starting spot at nose tackle.

WR Nsimba Webster

Webster — like Hodge — showed out when nearly the everyone else on the offense struggled. Webster reeled in three receptions for 27 yards while also making plays on special teams as a gunner. For a guy who doesn’t have a fantastic chance of making the 53-man roster, Webster is making it as hard of a choice as possible.

Bad
OL Bobby Evans

The main positive from Evans was the positional versatility he was asked to display, though he struggled in his first NFL game. Fellow rookie offensive tackle David Edwards and backup OL Jamil Demby both showed better, potentially leading to better roster spots for those two.

CB Dominique Hatfield

Hatfield has been in the NFL long enough to stand out at this point, though he still hasn’t. He wasn’t impressive.

Ugly
QB Brandon Allen

Allen struggled mightily in his 2019 preseason debut. There really wasn’t much to highlight as a positive. Overthrows, taking too long to read progressions, and not moving the ball. It was a very bad night for Allen. John Wolford is in the lead for the third quarterback spot on the team currently.

Penalties + drops
Very ugly and very sloppy. Time to clean up the mistakes that you can control for the second game.

LA Rams’ head coach Sean McVay provides injury updates for a pair of key depth players

The latest on Rams’ RB Justin Davis and OLB Ogbonnia Okoronkwo

Wins and losses during the preseason mean very little. But for the players, taking snaps in training camp - and especially during preseason games - provides the coaching staff with valuable tape that helps them make their ultimate roster decisions. Suffice to say, not being out there only hurts your chances of sticking around.

For the Los Angeles Rams, Week 1 of the preseason came and went and a pair of potentially key depth guys were no-shows. Here’s an update from head coach Sean McVay regarding running back Justin Davis and outside linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo:

Yeah. So RB Justin Davis is dealing with a concussion. He got a concussion in one of the practices against the Raiders, so he’s in the protocol. And ‘Obo’ (OLB Ogbonnia Okoronkwo) has had some different things, it’s his hamstrings. So, he’s coming back from a soft tissue and we want to be smart about that. Hopefully we will get him back out here. He was out here doing some work with (Director of Rehabilitation/Assistant Athletic Trainer) Byron (Cunningham) and those guys. Hopefully we will see him sooner than later.

Not good.

Davis (concussion), who currently finds himself ahead of rookie running back Darrell Henderson on the team’s depth chart looks like he could be on the way out. Maybe a truer representation of the Rams’ depth at the position would be to slide Davis behind Henderson and 2018 6th round selection John Kelly — who’s behind Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown. The Rams won’t be carrying five running backs.

It’s no secret the Rams’ have been looking for a bit of juice from the OLB position. And for Okoronkwo (hamstrings...with an “s”) - who many deemed a potential 5th round “draft steal” last year - his ability to stay on the field has firmly been placed in question. A foot surgery last May forced him to miss all of last year’s training camp and the Rams placed him on the reserve/PUP list. He was activated in November, but didn’t see a single regular season snap to finish out the year. Ogbo currently finds himself behind Dante Fowler Jr. and Samson Ebukam as WILL linebacker on the team’s depth chart.

The timing of these injuries, for both players, is unfortunate and both look to be on the wrong side of the bubble. The best ability is availability, and the ability of these two to get healthy quickly will ultimately determine how much longer we see them in a Rams’ uniform.

CB Kevin Peterson, Los Angeles Rams
91.0 Overall Grade, 25 Defensive Snaps

On the field for 25 snaps total and 13 in coverage, Peterson was targeted twice and allowed one reception for 19 yards. Coming away with an interception in coverage, he finished the game having allowed an NFL passer rating of 43.8 on throws into his coverage.

CB Kevin Peterson
Aside from a penalty for impeding a punt returner, Peterson had a good night. He picked off Mike Glennon two plays after making a tackle for loss (which was canceled out by offensive holding), playing like the Rams’ best cornerback in the game. He needs to stack good performances in order to make the team, so this was a strong start.

Davis is history, but OgOk should be considered for an IR designation imo. Let's see more of Landis Durham against Dallas and maybe he has a repeat performance and can earn that roster spot.

Rams need to find a way to hang on to Darious Williams considering we have 2 starting CB's who will become free agents following the season. I think we lose him if he goes to the practice squad.

This might not be popular, but the Rams may want to listen to trade offers for Josh Reynolds that result in a 3'rd round draft pick or higher. Hodge & Thomas could fight for the 4'th & 5'th spots and if we were to carry 6 WR's, Nsimba Webster might even find a home.

Troy Hill better be worth that new guaranteed contract because we may lose a quality young prospect as a possible outcome.

Bobby Evans had a really bad showing Saturday against the Raiders at LT. He was constantly getting beat with speed rushes on the outside. Some of this was due to the fact that Bortles and others weren't stepping up in the pocket. But those 3rd string players were giving him the fits on almost every passing play. Imagine him going up against no.1's...yikes.
He looked better suited at RT where you don't see speed rushers too often but that man will struggle no matter who he faces if he's ever called upon.

Greg Gains will probably be starting on week 1 or week 2 in the place of JD at NT. JD hasn't really shown much outside of practice. It's not time to panic yet as there are still 3 weeks of preseason and we'll see them play against No. 1's more often, especially in week 3. I hope we see Gains get a lot of looks in that game. That will really tell us where's he's at. But so far he looks like a steal in the draft. He's only going to get better and better.

David Edwards, I'm surprised they rated at a C-. He really held his own at LT, in the run game and pass-pro. I expect him to be Whit's backup by mid season. He's still a bit raw but he definitely looks the part. I think the false starts and holdings are just nerves that will calm down as he gets more experience. If thats the reason why they rated him at C- then his tape is probably more like a B+ which could be a huge for our Oline next year.

I actually forgot about him because of his injury but I remember him looking pretty good last year as well. Hopefully he can keep it up and stay healthy. It would be great to find a good CB on the cheap.

Not one word about rookie center Hrynkavic. Granted he didn't get in til the 4th qtr, but he looked good snapping the ball and blocking. I hope he gets more snaps earlier in the next games.

I have been following CB Darious Williams since he was claimed early October of last year. I posted this back on Jun 12, 2019.

I concur, however, the only issue with Hrynkavic is that he's only a Center as far as I know, but considering how bad the others looked, I'd give him more of an opportunity.

Kromer has been flip flopping & moving OL'ers all around to different posts....I see no reason not to give Vitas Hrynkiewicz some practice & game snaps @ the OG posts. It's not like OG's Kolone, Kaskey & Demby are dominating @ the moment. Its not like anyone can use his dinky size issues as a reason. VH is 2 inches taller & Vitas normally plays about 8 to 9 pounds heavier than Austin Blythe @ RG....o_O

Demby needs to get some serious amounts of time @ the OG post & forget the OT(n) for now.
