My guess is scheme fit, because Mannion doesn't seem so bad that we need to get rid of him now.

I think he has flaws, mostly with locking onto receivers and not going through progressions, but I figured those are things that can be coached. Maybe McVay really see's something he doesn't like.

I figured scheme fit at least means that Mannion has a chance in the league to do something, be a backup or not. The other option means that he may have trouble finding another job...

Well, ... Mannion did have to play on the same terrible team as Goff in 2016, with a horrible OL and receivers who couldn't catch. 2017 might be a better proving ground for both QB's. jmo.

I've been trying to think. But I can't remember a single play action pass from Mannion this preseason. And Goff was running play action very frequently. Could be wrong, but that could just mean they're not comfortable with Mannion running play action. Allen was primarily a play action QB.
Well playaction is used to give the qb more time to find his receiver it's used to cut the field in half and shift the defense. You're right that Mannion didn't run a lot of playaction but that could be because the coaches wasn't worried about cutting the field in half maybe they wanted to see what he could do to gauge him more for the backup role.

That's likely what the preseason was for, if they came out of it still worried about his tendency to lock on and not go through progressions, could be what pushed them to find someone to take over that QB2 spot. Allen is the type of QB that can be groomed over the season to be that backup QB.

There's nothing that I see that suggests that the coaching staff is worried about who we have as QB1. It's QB2 and maybe QB3 that apparently is the issue with them.

I don't think we need to be that worried.

I am skeptical and rightfully so. Maybe McVay wants to have his choice on who he wants @ QB. We haven't had a QB who has wowed us since Warner. Pretty scary.

How is that splitting hairs all I did was give you a direct quote from Allbright. It's a big difference from going to calling a qb out saying they wasn't sold on Mannion to all of a sudden they wasn't sold on the depth at the position. That's pretty cut and dry.
He said they're not happy with QB depth. At that point in time the depth is Mannion and Orlovsky. They've moved on for Orlovsky and added Allen. Now you say it doesn't include Mannion in the initial depth comment because they haven't moved on from him yet. Mannion is depth at the QB position he was then and he is now. If they "aren't happy with depth" it could still mean him since he is depth.

Here's the tweet in question. He specifically mentions they're not sold on Mannion.

That doesn't mean that Mannion will be cut tomorrow, although I suppose anything is possible if it's true, but it would make sense to find a long term solution for the #2 spot.

However when asked what his source was for the above tweet he responded, so who knows what the next move will be:

Yup Mannion is part of the QB depth. They've moved on from one of the two that were depth at the time of the comment. Not sure they move on from the second or not but his initial statement still applies to Mannion.

The scheme isn't it because he ran that same scheme in college. They could like Albert more than Mannion or maybe they do feel like Mannion is going to have more opportunity next year for another team, but Albert isn't going to replace Mannion this year so in my opinion this has nothing to do with Mannion and more of them just upgrading the overall qb depth

maybe they are worried Mannion will also do an extended holdout....

That doesn't really mean anything. McVay likely has an ideal QB, and we don't know how Mannion compares to that QB. If McVay likes a mobile QB, obviously, Mannion wouldn't be a good fit.

That's true but mobility has nothing to do with scheme because Mannion ran that same scheme in college for 4 yrs. Mannion might not be mobile enough but I don't see anything from Albert to show that he's ready to remove Mannion as the number 2. Mannion has looked much better than him next year might be a completely different story though

Mannion has looked far superior in preseason in every aspect. To me this move screams next year unless the Rams have a offer on the table for Mannion
