Notes from the 11 Personnel podcast:

The Rams not only will have Ryan Wendell and Aaron Kromer working as Oline coaches. They will have guest appearances from veteran Oline coaches in camp. She didn’t say who or for how long. She did allude to Wendell being a player so the hope is that communication is improved between the coach and the linemen.

She also said that McVay really really wants to get this fixed. She mentioned in the past that McVay’s offensive focus was the Oline and run game, and that he needs it fixed.

Maybe part of the problem is the players?
Pretty sure She said Zack Kromer not his dad

Olson Not a Big Loss

Decent Coach, but it's obvious the Rams like Zac Robinson and Jake Peetz better. Overall, hopefully, the Rams will announce their 2023 Coaching Staff this week. Some we now know with additions of Wendell (OL Coach), Jimmy Lake & Aubrey Pleasant (defensive backs) still awaiting the special team coach hire as I don't expect current Assistant Special Teams Coach Jeremy Springer to be promoted, but nothing has been leaked out as to who will be taking over. Not sure if it will be a college hire, but maybe an Assistant Special Teams Coach on a staff that has some experience like Ben Kotwica, however, if the Colts don't keep Bubba Ventrone that would be a great get for the Los Angeles Rams.

I think it has more to do with how the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator helped him build the game plan, it failed to do so. That's why they got fired. We'll know for sure in about 60 days though. If most of the current line returns.

Jimmy Lake and Raheem Morris are polar opposites when it comes to playing a secondary. Lake likes to pressure an offense to force mistakes. He pressures them by playing aggressive secondary play making the QB hold the ball or risk a tight window throw. Lake doesn't believe in uncontested receptions. Under Lake the Huskies had one of the best secondaries in the nation. Their defense finished like 12th in the nation and was one of the best in takeaways. Lake wouldn't play a dud like Kendrick, or an overmatched Hill. He won't routinely leave the short zone wide open on every passing downs. That is why there was no pass pressure. Not because of lack of players when you have Floyd, Donald and Gaines. It was because the QB always knew his short zone receiver was going to be wide open.

As a Husky fan I watched Lake's defense force mistakes instead of waiting for one to drop into their laps. That is the difference between Lake and Morris.

Rams coaching staff update: Who's in and who's out for 2023?

Sean McVay is still sorting through his coaching staff for the 2023 season, between bringing in new coaches and replacing ones who left. The Rams have already seen multiple assistants leave, either for new opportunities elsewhere or because their contracts weren’t renewed.

So far, McVay has made five new hires to his staff for next season, including offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like he’ll need to find a new defensive coordinator with Raheem Morris set to return, but there are other holes still to fill.

Here’s an update on the Rams’ new coaches, as well as those who will not be back with the team in 2023.

Sean McVay might not be done losing assistant coaches

The Philadelphia Eagles are looking for a DC and have turned to the Rams’ staff

Sean McVay’s coaching staff has been poached year after year since he joined the Los Angeles Rams in 2017. After a down year this past season, it seemed things were going to be different this time around - but now attrition is setting in once again.

The Philadelphia Eagles have interviewed Rams defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator Chris Shula for their vacant defensive coordinator position, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Shula and Eagles HC Nick Sirianni worked together on the then-San Diego Chargers staff back in 2015. The Eagles lost both their OC, Shane Steichen, and DC, Jonathan Gannon, to head coaching jobs after losing Super Bowl LVII to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Rams were able to retain defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who was a finalist for the head coaching role with the Indianapolis Colts. McVay moved on from offensive coordinator Liam Coen and brought in a familar face - Mike LaFleur - brother of McVay’s first OC Matt LaFleur. This was shaping up to be the best coaching staff the Rams have had for a while, but then the losses started piling up.

The Carolina Panthers poached running backs coach and assistant head coach Thomas Brown for their OC vacancy under Frank Reich. LA’s division rival Seattle Seahawks hired senior offensive assistant Greg Olson for their opening at QB’s coach. Shula could be the third coach to leave McVay’s staff in the span of just one week.

Philadelphia has also interviewed Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, who’s working under Jim Harbaugh but also has experience under John Harbaugh with the Baltimore Ravens. The Eagles have also visited with former Wisconsin DC and former NFL safety Jim Leonhard, so Sirianni has spread a wide net across both the NFL and college ranks.

The Rams are still searching for at least a special teams coordinator, but they likely had other assistant positions to fill even before potentially losing Shula. LA has historically not announced the coaching staff until the full group has been assembled.

I was hoping that Defensive Secondary Coach Chris Shula would return to his previous Rams coaching position as defensive coach OLB unit once again.

That coaching position is still not filled unless Chris Beake takes over coaching inside & outside LB'ing units after Thad Bogardus was not retained.

RB coach is vacant however Jake Peetz has coached RB @ the NFL level before but his expertise is in the passing game.

I am still waiting to see if McVay will return Jay Gruden to coaching or will he continue to assist McVay.

Agree with some here as I believe Chris Shula will be the OLB Coach returning to the position he coached previously, with Beake staying inside. Peetz was the RB Coach for Carolina Panthers in 2019, but has been more in the passing game, although for him not going to Nebraska you have to wonder if he was not promised a position, so nice catch about some background as a RB Coach @BonifayRam.

I don't expect Jay Gruden to stay, unless it's in a similar capacity. Shocked he has not garnered a Head Coaching gig, however, if he does stay & McVay leaves next year, don't be shocked if he's Raheem Morris selection as OC for the Rams in 2024, hoping that does happen, but posting it nonetheless.

Shula is like Brown in that I am sure he runs the room well and is impressive in person but last year was part of the problem on the actual field production side. On field production and consistency is the metric.

So best of luck hiring that dude as DC. Eagles would have a great org around him but that road is gonna be rocky.

I feel that the Eagles go with Jesse Minter over Shula here, would be shocked if Shula is hired by the Eagles to take over as their DC, but you never know. Be shocked.
