I was a big Goff supporter while he was here. but it was obvious the last couple years, that when DCs found and exploited his weakness, he never overcame it. All young QBs that have good runs get "Figured Out" (To some degree) and DCs take away what they do well, and force them into what they don't. Some guys adapt, grow, and overcome; and some guys don't. Goff never did. It all started, ironically enough, against the Lions in 2018, and the following week the Bears tweaked the Lions Defensive plan, and that was the beginning of the end. That way of attacking and pressuring Goff, became his undoing, and he never was able to solve that puzzle. I don't hate or even dislike the guy, and as big of a Goff supporter as I was earlier in his career, I was super excited when they traded for Stafford.
I was super excited when they got rid of Blythe

Can we turn this into a Bash Blythe thread?

I'm of the mind that Bulger was a result of Martz's hubris. He lost faith in Kurt and tried to show he was the great GSoT genius. But either way, I think he was right about compete being important in your QB. And I also think some guys can lose that compete when they get a super fine model girlfriend plus a fat paycheck to make his nest with her.
It started when he met her.

I'll say this about next Sunday... the Rams' LBs and DBs need to be sharp with their tackling. Jared Goff has really lived up to the "Captain Checkdown" slight this year with a 6.3 yards/attempt (lowest among starting QBs) and an equally bad 6.5 average depth of pass attempt. His YAC average (5.6) is respectable, but if the Rams tackle well and limit YAC, the Lions will have a very difficult time moving the ball.

I found it interesting that Matthew Stafford haters are developing in Detroit as they watch their former QB not suck. I think if he was still a loveable loser, they might like him better. I was on one Lions forum and saw several posts hating on his wife, Kelly Stafford, Brenda Warner style. One guy commented that she couldn't wait to see the few Lions fans booing the team at SoFi from the Owners box, laughing at their misery.

Where the hell did that come from?

If they pressure Jared, he will be a turnover machine....

Yeah I doubt Jared will have any time to checkdown his passes.

He is going to be really frustrated after this game.

The Lions suck so bad.

I saw the one pass play that went for a TD by the Bengals last week and the Detroit CB was fooled so bad he lost his "shoes" going the wrong way. I would have turned off the game if I was a Detroit fan after seeing that play.

Or started a drinking game trying to guess which Detroit defensive player would go the wrong way in covering a Bengal player.

It is a joke just how bad they are.

I agree. I wonder if, given McVay's familiarity with Goff's weaknesses, coupled with the lack of a real outside threat on Detroit's offense, the Rams might play tighter coverage to take away the quick throws that would be Goff's only salvation.

On a related note, did you hear what Goff said about Aaron Donald's mother? I think we need to make sure that Aaron knows about it!

I don’t think pointing out Jared isn’t good is bashing him. It’s an observation and part of evaluating the Rams and their decisions.
At this very early point, it sure looks like the Rams significantly upgraded the QB position.
Isn’t that the bottom line?

What did he say? And Aaron Donald would be the last person I would be making fun of someone's mother.

I did a search and this came up from 2018 from Goff

“He’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” Goff said. “I try to get a gauge – I’ll ask the head judge [when] he’s having a week like that, ‘How’s 99 look?’ And they’ll be like, ‘He’s the best I’ve ever seen.’ So you hear that pretty often. I’m just happy he’s on our side and I don’t have to face him. But yeah, he’s incredible and he deserves everything coming his way.”

Uh oh Jared - you in big trouble now

Reasonable people can disagree regarding Goff's ability, but....yes, I'd question the sanity of anyone who would not agree that Stafford is a significant upgrade.

if anything he had too much faith in kurt. he played kurt against the eagles with a broken throwing hand over a healthy bulger. that's how much faith he had in him. ill founded faith in that situation.

then after the game kurt's wife had to blab that martz didn't send kurt to get an x-ray on his hand. and that set martz off. he only let kurt start again the next season so he could torture him against the ferocious giants pass rush. it was sickening how he left him out there to get smashed down after down while he kept calling long developing plays non stop. after that blood bath kurt never started for the rams again and martz didn't release him the following season until every team was set at qb. he was such a petty man.

.
I was at that game in NJ. Freaking brutal. Even Giants fans were asking why he was subjected to that abuse...

Sean Mcvay was really pissed during and after the Giants game. When Stafford threw the interception Mcvay literally threw his headset.

Mcvay is beginning to remind me of Mad Martz. He allows almost no room for mistakes. On one hand you like that type of competitor. This game had plenty of Stafford bonehead mistakes between the interception and the 3 missed interception, not to mention the bonehead run by Stafford where he doesn't get down and almost gets his head taken off. Seriously dude, get down.

The similarity with Martz is Mcvay doesn't throw his QB's under the bus in front of the media but gets a little crazy when his offense isn't working. I've heard several analysts this week move the Rams down the power rankings because of Staffords erratic throws over the last several games. He has a top Oline giving him excellent protection, multiple targets getting separation and Mcvay creating wide open looks with some unbelievable play calls. To Staffords credit, once he gets on a roll he throws darts. He also clearly throws the verticals much better than Goff did the final two years. But if anyone doesn't think Mcvay is getting frustrated you are not paying attention.

Meanwhile Goff has a Coach saying he needs to put the game on his shoulders to get a win but also says he doesn't believe you can judge Goff under these conditions. The conditions is an Oline ravaged by injury and the worst WRs in the NFL.

Sunday will truly be a beatdown of Goff and the Lions. We are talking top team vs bottom dwellers.

But pay attention to Mcvay, he knows he is a tremendous play caller and he puts on a good face to the public, but he is starting to get frustrated. Watch his post pressers. Once we start facing some real defenses it could get ugly. So far we have faced some terrible secondaries. Hopefully Stafford has hit full stride by then with this new offense.
Let me guess. You didn't like the trade.

Hockenson is going to be open all day long. Goff should be able to make a lot of underneath completions and get comfortable. He's also going to be highly motivated to stick it to McVay.
This. Goff would always follow up a game where he laid an egg with a good game. That to me points to no being consistent in preparation week in and week out. I too think he's gonna give us his best game but that was part of the problem with him. He'd have a bad game, get every so mildly called out by McVay and then he'd follow it up with a good game. Rinse, repeat.
