Starting in 2017, each NFL team may keep up to ten members on its practice squad in addition to the 53-member main roster. A majority of those on a practice squad are rookie draft picks and undrafted free agents who were released prior to the regular season. A practice squad also includes veterans, up to four as of the 2016 season.

Players may be signed to a practice squad for several reasons: for lack of space on the team, due to injury, or because they require more development. Practice squad players can be signed to any team's 53-man active roster without compensation at any time during the season.

A player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons; he is eligible for a third season only if the team has at least 53 players on its active/inactive list for the duration of that player's employment, or have no prior accrued seasons in the NFL (an accrued season is six or more games on the active roster); or if he has accrued a year of NFL experience on a club's 53-man active roster.

If the player was on the active list for fewer than 9 games during their "only accrued season(s)", he maintains his eligibility for the practice squad. Games in which a player is listed as the third-string quarterback do not count as being on the active list.

Practice squad players practice alongside regular roster players during the week, but they are not allowed to play in actual games. They can be paid considerably less than active squad players; in 2012, the minimum salary for a practice squad player was $5,700 per week, and the minimum rookie salary was $390,000. Some practice squad players are paid considerably more, however.

Damn, sucks about Hemmingway. Had a lot of potential, but the injury threw off his career trajectory and he just wasn't able to recover this season. Not sure if we can PS him, but we should if we can.

Sucks about Hodge too, but there is a silver lining there. It wasn't that long ago that our WR depth was so bad he would have easily made the team. Now we are so friggin' deep at the position that even a strong pre-season wasn't enough for him to make it. Hope we can get him to the PS though.

That roster exemption for Donald and Brown are gonna be huge. We basically get to keep two players who really will be practice squad guys on the team and ensure they don't get poached on this merry-go-round right now. Am I right, do we get two exemptions right now?

I'm thinking the same thing, I really think he could become a starter if he continues to train hard

Guessing Smart loses his roster spot when Donald is ready.
Justin Davis moves when Jamal Browns suspension is over
Johnson could be the guy to be cut if a CB the Rams like is available.

NFL practice squad: Everything you need to know
By: Cameron DaSilva

Every team in the NFL trimmed its roster to 53 players, meaning more than 1,100 guys were left without jobs after Saturday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline. It’s the harsh reality of trying to make it in the NFL, which is so incredibly difficult to do.

However, it’s not over for every single one of the players released by their respective teams Saturday. Although the NFL doesn’t have a minor-league system like MLB or a G League like the NBA, there is the practice squad.

You’ve probably heard about the practice squad and are familiar with the workings of it, but in case you aren’t, we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

Practice squad size
Each team is allowed to carry 10 players on its practice squad. As the title states, players are allowed to practice with the team while on the squad, giving coaches the chance to continue evaluating them. In addition to the 10 players, teams can also carry one international player.

Player eligibility
Not everyone is eligible to make the practice squad. Only players with two or fewer accrued seasons can sign to the practice squad, though they can’t stay on it for more than three seasons. A season is considered accrued when a player is on an active roster for at least six games.

Salary
Players on the practice squad will make a minimum of $7,600 per week. With a season being 17 weeks long, that makes the minimum annual salary $129,200.

Signing process
Teams can begin signing players to their practice squad at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Sept. 2 after players go through waivers.

Player “poaching”
Players on the practice squad aren’t protected from being signed by other teams. Rules permit teams to sign players from other teams’ practice squads, but not without a few conditions. If that happens, the player has to be elevated to the signing team’s 53-man roster for at least three weeks, while also earning three weeks salary.

Hoping we can sign John simon. Colts fans were really surprised he was cut. He wasn’t subject to waivers so he can sign with whoever he likes.
