Question for all—

Anyone know how much influence OBJ has over where he is traded?

The way I understand it, whatever team is interested in OBJ would have to work out a new contract with him prior to a trade. (The new contract wouldn’t be signed, but it would need to be agreed to “in principle” so the acquiring team wouldn’t have to worry about a holdout situation).

Let’s suppose a team (hypothetically, the Bills) makes a higher trade compensation offer than the Rams. Can OBJ say to his agent, “Don’t negotiate a new contract in good faith with the Bills because I don’t want to play there. But yeah, if LA calls, let’s do it.”

In other words, my question is— does OBJ have leverage to coerce the Giants into taking an inferior trade offer from a team he prefers (the Rams)? Are the Giants free to take the best offer, or can OBJ use his holdout threat to dictate which team he gets traded to?

Reason I ask, obviously, is due to (a) OBJ lives in LA in the offseason and (b) supposedly OBJ has told two Rams players he “wants in.”

Yes he has a ton of leverage. If OBJ wont resign and he tells other teams he will only sign longterm certain places why would a team not on that list give up their draft capital. They would just have him for one season and at best franchise him. It is up to him where he signs long term that's why I cant see him in Buffalo or Cleveland no matter what they offer

I believe Aqib Talib stopped a trade to the 9ers, before the trade to the Rams. I think some players contracts have no trade clauses that give them some control whether they're traded or not, and if so to whom by enforcing the no trade if they don't want to go to a particular team. I may be wrong here, however.

yes and no. he can say everything you mentioned, but if a team is willing to accept that possibility and just apply two franchise tags while they hope to work out a long term deal, than OBJ's leverage would be gone. now most teams would probably want some sort of agreement that OBJ would be willing to try and work out a long term deal, but there could be a team willing to just use franchise tags if need be.

either way, im sure if a team is willing to make him the highest paid WR, he wouldnt refuse to be traded to them, unless maybe another team he prefers more is offering roughly the same amount then you could see that leverage ploy you mentioned come into play.

i dont think many players have no trade clauses (if any). Talib's situation was more of a threat to not show up/broncos respect him enough to help him choose a team

Awesome.

Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Confirms my guess that LAR is indeed the most likely landing spot for OBJ.

freak me. Four more weeks of this crap.

I know, right?

Unfortunately I think the Giants are inclined to wait a while— to see if teams are willing to throw crazy draft picks at NYG and crazy money at OBJ.

I for one hope that McVay gets his prized new weapon... but in the meantime I’m gonna have to keep hitting “refresh” on this damn thread for days or weeks

Yes.

He can refuse to report until week 11 and still get credit for the year.

That’s why ANY trade to any team will be contingent upon his reporting.

Other players have had that, although I think more have been contingent upon not retiring than reporting. Meaning, “we’ll trade for the guy if he plays for us. If he’s just gonna retire, no dice”

Funny, I’ve been saying that for days now.
Me: "The Rams are going to...."
Friend: "Oh yeah, where did you hear that?"
Me: "My source...Mackeyser!"
Friend: "Oh, Cool! What does he know?"
Me: "Everything!"

Another idle question for all— any guesses as to how teams work around the “no tampering” rules?

Suppose, as a recruiting tool, McVay wants OBJ to know how he would be used in the Rams’ offense. What’s to prevent McVay from telling this info to a player who is a “friend of a friend” of OBJ, who then passes it on to OBJ himself?

Just wonder if these “no communication” rules are strictly enforced— or routinely bent or broken.

I bet if McVay or Snead want to communicate a specific message of some sort to OBJ, they could do so through a third party somehow.

Just an FYI, I tweeted at Ben Allbright to confirm. He's not a personal friend, but he and I have shared numerous convos both private and public on twitter and a) the guy is a really cool, stand-up dude and b) his sources are Shefter-like legit many times fwiw.

He's got quite an ego. Not a bad guy, but very arrogant.

I need to make an apology to Jake Ellenbogan from DowntownRams. I really thought that I heard a source which I mentioned here. I was totally wrong. Please don't blame him for revealing a source, which he did not do. I am so sorry.
