If the NFL has clear rules on approved work out locations, that should be plenty.

The problem with people getting hurt outside of a workplace is, how do you prove how they got hurt.

This is not a grey area and something, I'm sure, all the agents and players are aware of.

You get hurt at a team facility and your covered.
You get hurt outside of a team facility and you're not.

Well, okay.

So the Rams have encouraged Goff to go to Tom House who's world renowned for helping with throwing mechanics... for baseball as well as football. Tom Brady and a bunch of college and pro QBs hit him up at USC in the spring. Goff went at least once.

Based on what folks are saying, even as the club encouraged and supported Goff to go to this specialty, non-club run venue... was Goff supposed to go full r/malicious compliance and refuse unless Tom House came to the facility? And how badly would he have been crucified by fans and the media for such a move? Would ANYONE have given him any leeway for such a move based on "I would go, but I can't risk working out at a non-team run facility"???

These aren't guys who are working out in a garage or basement (although AD does and the Rams certainly hasn't discouraged that), these are guys who are going to legit places often using the program designed by the team and/or specialists.

If someone was playing on a quadcycle and jacked their knees, then yeah... they shouldn't expect to receive their full contract. But in good conscience working to be at their best?

Why would the NFL want to discourage that?

And rest assured it will. More players are likely to eschew those outside venues which provide specialized technique training and thus miss out on a growth opportunity.

Here's how I know this is gonna be a problem. It's only a matter of time that a QB suffers an injury to their throwing arm while attending a Tom House or similar throwing academy. What if it were someone like Lamar Jackson or Patrick Mahomes?

I guarantee that the team doesn't do that for "cap" reasons and guarantee that the NFL would "revisit" that with the NFLPA right quick.

Bottom line is that Denver took the opportunity because they'd paid him a lot and he had a freak injury, opted out due to COVID and then had another freak injury. Which is fine, I guess, as they're technically within the rules.

However... don't think that this is over and you can bet if the NFL can find yet another way to shoot themselves in the foot while they fail upwards, they'll do it.

Well I think you're missing the point here, at least my point. Players are <cough, off the record, cough> required to workout in the off season. Particularly during the "voluntary" OTA's and mini-camp, which is when James was injured. It's a dog and pony show, the players union has negotiated down the practice time, OTA's etc, and the owners want to stick it to them when they can. It is a slippery slope however when guys like James, who clearly the team wanted rid of, gets cut, but when another player who is a player the team wants to keep suffers the same way, that the team can decide to pay him. I dont know why the owners want to get in to a pizzing contest about "player safety" because that never ends well for the league

Yep. It's also gonna send the message that teams are "playing favorites" which always turns out to be a positive in the locker room... /sarcasm.

I don’t wish injuries on anyone. Bad karma. But dang… this is just not good.

I find it interesting that the Niners canceled all OTAs due to two major injuries they had during their 7th OTA session. Shanny said they will not have any more practices until TC. You have to wonder about their conditioning program.

In regards to the Rams' own problem, specifically with Terrell Lewis I again have to wonder about his particular susceptibility to certain kinds of injury. In college, he had an elbow and then an ACL injury. Both associated with joint ligaments. The other night at dinner I was talking to a friend and we got around to talking about Lewis. I told him that I wouldn't be surprised if Lewis's injury was some sort of patella strain. These things can temporarily subside with rest but then re-occur when stressed (during play). The only permanent fix I know of is surgery but that is a very prolonged healing time of up to a year or more. If the Rams really think it's something like that, the only real way to diagnose it is via an MRI. That would mean as much as two seasons lost depending upon the timing because it would take months of rehab to regain his physical fitness. There is no guarantee it wouldn't reoccur so it might be a career-ender.

It wouldn't surprise me if he is placed on IR to open his roster spot. Without knowing if the Rams have gotten an MRI on him it's very hard to speculate. I would find it strange if the Rams haven't gotten an MRI on that knee.

Regardless what has happened to the Niners underscores the danger of what used to be simple practices and the need for the players to take conditioning seriously and make it a year-round activity as long as they are in the NFL.

I saw this too. Seems like an over-reaction, but also must feel like déjàvu.

WhoTF is Freddie Swann?
Hes the Sea WR who they're projecting to benefit from increased touches if Eskridge is hurt. Bell is their beat writer and I wonder if this was something that happened pre draft if he hasn't participated all off-season program.

.

Natrez Patrick was carted off the field during mini camp for the Broncos. I hope it's nothing too bad.
