I really think they don't have all the leverage. If they don't agree to a contract, it causes a huge headache for the organization to look for his replacement in a shitty QB market. Stafford and his agent know they are by far the Rams best option at winning right now. This whole he's under contract for 2 years means squat if he holds out. With that said, the part I respect about our front office is they don't dick around when it comes to tough decisions. Not saying it will, but if it somehow got ugly on the business side, I know they will not hesitate to rip the band-aid off and do what they have to do. I don't see it going down like that, but we'll all find what truly happens in time.
I always think that argument of who has the leverage is overblown. The player has the talent and the team owns the purse strings. Yeah sometimes a player can have the team over a barrel but more often than not, it seems that there are other things at play that determine how negotiations go. The market for the player, the team’s power at the position, and where a team can go within cap constraints pretty much dictate the offer.

Of course “cap constraints “ is always that thing shrouded in mystery. A lot of guys on here know way more about the cap than I do but even they often get blind sided by how it truly works.

He has a contract with the Rams, and like last year, he doesnt need a new one. There is no other team, that's just fan fodder.
The question is, and we clearly dont know what the answer is, what does he want? If he truly is hinting at retirement, then there's no point in guaranteeing more than 2025. Both sides have been honorable and I dont see where that will change
And there is something we also don’t know and can’t know. Does Staff want a contract for more than a year? Do the Rams have a plan for post Staff? I’d love to know but we won’t probably even after the negotiations are done.

Personally, I took Staff’s comments to say that he’s wanting to play for a couple more seasons. And I also think he’s up to the job. I would like to see that happen.

This is not to squash speculation. It’s kinda what we do.

So Stan - if you’re watching - offer Matthew a consulting job in your company with stock options. Then the Rams can give him a zero dollars contract for two years. Done deal.

Yeah, if all else fails, just do what the Patriots did. The league gave it's blessings to that shit.

Agree, leverage is definitely over used to me. Both sides will having varying degrees of it. The Rams are like where can you play where you get to play for an awesome team and organization that is as close to contending for a championship. Stafford is like there's no one better than me for this team to do just that lol. Stafford is going to play and wants to be paid. Nothing the Rams do will stop that but only determine where that may be. The Rams will simply decide how long Stafford fits into their plans and at what price point. It's anyone's guess how it goes down because all of this needs to be done in conjunction with what's best for the Rams short and long term plus how much money they set aside for future contracts for our young ascending players.

They'll probably get a deal done, but I can see the fiscal dilemma in the negotiations. Seems like it's kind of an all in type of deal.

Stafford already has a big dead cap charge. If they extend him they are going to possibly push an even larger dead cap charge into the future that may hit right about the same time they are attempting to re-sign some of their young talent.

Load up! Trade for Tyreek Hill and combine him with a healthy Puka and Jordan Whittington. Extend Kyren and let Corum jump in there and contribute, Tyreek can be similar to a Ramsey signing in an offensive way. Could you imagine Tyreek with this squad? Although i personally think hes a dick he’s pretty damn good at football and ads an element thats different than anything this team has had. Balls out! Lets hear it!

There's no way I trade for Tyreek Hill under any circumstances. Not only is he one of the biggest pieces of shit in the NFL, but he's got an enormous contract, and wants to redo it to make him the highest paid receiver in the NFL.

Does any other franchise have drama like this every damn year?? It's getting to be rigoddamndiculous.
Yes, every single one of them. We just don't notice because we aren't plugged in to them in the same way we are with the Rams.

I'm sure nobody cares what i would do but everyone else has chimed in.

I would give Stafford 2 years guaranteed at market rate and I would be clear with him that I am going balls out to get a QB of the future next off-season (assuming it's a better QB class than this upcoming year's disaster). I'm talking trade up to no 1 level balls out. This would include being very open to trading down this year for picks in the 26 draft. Then sit the kid I'd draft in 26 behind Staffords' 2nd guaranteed year.

You cant win consistently without elite QB play and the succession plan, even if Stafford has 2 great years left, needs to be a consideration NOW. But hey, it's not my money.

I haven't even seen this level of drama from the RAMS before the SB win. This is not the norm, IMO.

How often are teams playing a year-to-year game with a future Hall of Fame QB playing at an elite level yet, but also close to retirement with age and career injuries with no developmental QB or contingency plan?

I feel like the it wouldn't appear so bad if their were good FA options and we weren't picking at 26 but were closer to 15th where you could move up for a QB you like.

I feel like this appears worse because realistically we're fucked if we don't get a deal done or he left. We have a legitimate window right now WITH Stafford, and without? Eh... Not so much.

That's just me though!

If Shanahan could win with Jimmy G., so could McVay. So I don't think we are totally screwed.

With that said, Stafford is far better than Jimmy and 90% of the quarterbacks out there. They'll get something done.

Agree that this is a.... somewhat unique situation, but it's not just Stafford. It seems like every year we have drama with McVay and/or Kupp as well. Before that it was AD. Who knows, maybe this shit just irritates me more in my old age...

It's not just you. It's very annoying. It'd be great to go into an off-season with eyes on FA and the draft, not "Monumental Piece A coming back, what about Monumental Piece B?"

WTF -getting your panties in a ball ? We don’t even know about the coaching staff right now.The 2024 season isn’t even over !! This week is sort of like the NCAA BB final four weekend. Scouts at Senior Bowl(coaches),Super Bowl week coming up a long with the Pro Bowl.

What Rams are even playing??
Talk about upset.Fisher was playing against the niners & he sits out Todd Gurley, then that next week there’s Gurley playing in the Pro Bowl. Zurllin missed to FG. That was disappointing!!
The Rams being in LA & what Mcvay has built will only attract a nice list of FA’s !
Plan B’’ I don’t get the KUPP thing.
—AD99 - LMFAO - REALLY!!!

Some Fans I don’t understand,we can go back & get into all that !! Just remember Goff & Gurley though after AD99 & UNDERSTAND the difference!!
