Waited for the shock to drop off before posting. Overall, I think the player swap itself is an upgrade if Goff never progresses farther. Obviously, time will tell on this. I'm a Goff fan and I felt like he could develop further but it was pretty obvious that McVay lost trust in him the last two seasons. The offense was diminished to help Goff reduce turnovers and be more of a game manager than a game winning QB. With our defense it worked most of the time this season but obviously had terrible results in other games. But you could tell McVay was not happy deploying the offense he was forced to deploy the last couple of seasons. That was obvious when he let loose when Wolford played. While scoring was light for various reasons in that Cardinals game it was blatantly obvious that McVay had far more trust in his backup QB to sling it downfield than he did his starter.
With this trade McVay gets the type of QB he wants. The big question will be if he can stay healthy. But I am excited to see Stafford in McVay's preferred offense. Higbee is going to get some serious yards going forward I think.
Where this trade gets frustrating is the contract we gave Goff two September's ago. I understand the FO is not afraid of the salary cap. They know how to manipulate it and account for mistakes down the road but you can't help but wonder the type of players they would be able to keep this offseason if they hadn't jumped the gun on it. I appreciate the ability to weather storms like this but am frustrated by the constant signings and immediately dumping of players after one year.
Well, there's this to consider.
We didn't know Stafford or any legit vet QB would be available and look at the terrible place Dallas is in. Dalton's not the answer and the only way they reconcile with Prescott is to pay him more than Watson now...
And compared to what Watson and Mahomes got, had Goff worked out, it turns out to be pretty reasonable.
Almost any contract of any length can look bad if the player doesn't perform after signing.
Albert Haynesworth's $100M contract was a disaster.
Aaron Donald's contract looks to be worth it and then some.
Granted, not remotely the same player, but still.
Also, think of this... had Stafford not been available... what would we do with the current situation? We wouldn't want to restructure Goff... that would only prolong the pain... and having $34M sitting on the bench even for a year would cause problems for everyone.
Anyway, something to consider.
