I’ve read this board forever! The best source for Rams news and insight bar none. Haven’t posted until now as I was floored reading the doom and gloom reaction around here. I love this trade, do you know how close we are to a super bowl now???
1. This front office is not only is a breath of fresh air but isn’t afraid to drop their huge nuts on the table and make moves. Yea we signed Goff to that contract. There are so many teams that would just live and die with that decision. This team wants to win a super bowl and will do whatever they think gives them the best shot to get there
2. Goff wasn’t going to be the man here. And I liked Goff. He already cost us at least 1 super bowl. McVay can put that on himself all he wants but Goff had guys wide open all day against the Pats.
3. the defense is elite. The offense was McVays by default. We now have someone who can take control of the huddle and command this offense. Stafford is a gamer and the boys will follow his lead in contrast to Goff’s mellow demeanor. He’s just wired differently
4. And guys. Matthew Stafford is an unbelievable talent. His accuracy, arm strength and more importantly football IQ are unbelievable. Trust the team man. When players are making comments about other QBs there’s clearly a divide in the locker room. They knew Goff was holding them back. Those close to Goff I’m sure are sad to see him go and wish him the best but they’ve got to be freaking juiced to know the opportunity they have in front of them
Enjoy the ride, this is a great day to be a Rams fan!!!!

I guess we'll see what Detroit does with Goff, but it's striking to me that a team with a GM who worked for the Rams and at least one former Rams coach traded for Goff. You'd think if Goff were an incompetent bum holding McVay back, Holmes and Pleasant would know this as well as anybody and want nothing to do with him.

This was my first thought

after watching some film of Stafford's I gotta admit, I'm impressed. Truly great arm talent

Stafford has been a stud, an absolute gunslinger. Never had much around him besides Megatron. He also has 2 teammates that are FAs this year WRs Marvin Jones and Kenny Golloday or something like that. Could see one following him and they offer deep threats.

LOL! View points are beautiful things. You are digging so hard to establish your narrative, (just like we all are).

My only issue is that everyone is trying to solve this by giving examples in a vacuum. Notice how in your example the credit is given to a WR and taken from the QB. This is the same as giving credit to wins and moving blame for loses to something else.

The overall picture is important.....................Stafford has played 10 years on a bad team. He has had ups and downs, injuries, good luck and bad. Goff has played 5 years and has all of the same. The biggest difference between Stafford and Goff now....Goffs team did everything in their power to move him while Detroit did their best to something in Staffords best interests, (they had better deals on the table).

Making statements like, "Goff just needed one more year" are most often dead on arrival quotes. "He's learning, just one more" all bad statements in a league known to be, "Not For Long".
And I was just quoting someone from work who watched every Lion game and didn't like Staffords game

As to the one more year - I was just stating I am going with Jrry's statement that it usually is not until the 6th year that the true essence of a QB comes out.

If Goff didn't improve next year, I would be in the we need to find a better QB camp.

I just feel we gave up too much for a QB that imho is not much better than Goff if any at all.

And he is 33 with a back injury - that just makes it that much worse.

Back injury's are extremely hard to come back from.

I can name two examples off the top of my head - Romo and Mike Marshall

And I don't think Bellinger will ever be the same hitting wise because of his back injury.

Even Kershaw has flare ups from time to time.

Yes as you can see I am a huge Dodger fan and follow them very closely each year.

So many key points in her article, some that settle debates we've have here.

Here are a few nuggets:

- She confirms the offense was changed for Goff, not the OL. It was supposed to reduce turnovers but that didn't happen.

- Sean McVay does not and did not want a short passing game. He wants more explosives. Again, he only changed to accommodate Goff.

- The Wolford start mattered. It wasn't that he played better but that he showed what was possible with a mobile QB who made good, quick decisions.

- Turns out McVay did have an issue with Goff's decision-making and processing speed. Quick decision making and processing speed are some of the qualities he appreciated about Wolford.

- McVay felt that Goff was holding the offense back. Not the OL, not the scheme.

- They did not feel that Goff was a QB that could get them through the gauntlet of tough playoff games and contend for Super Bowls every year. They felt what we did this year was pretty much the max.

- There was starting to be player frustration in the locker room in the 2nd half of the season due to Goff's underwhelming performance.

- Trading 1st round picks for established stars is a roster-building model that they have fully embraced.
Thanks for the great summary Den.

Maybe already posted:

"Let’s take two quarterbacks from the NFC North this season:

Quarterback A completed 50 passes in 114 attempts under pressure for 774 yards, eight touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 86.7.

Quarterback B completed 58 passes in 115 attempts under pressure for 876 yards, eight touchdowns, two interceptions, and a passer rating of 91.8.

Quarterback A is Aaron Rodgers. Quarterback B is Matthew Stafford."

Damn, gotta change the avatar again.

I'm working SO hard to control my own emotions. Trying my best to bring this thing back to the middle by compartmentalizing it a bit.

Here is what I think i know (and I am often wrong):

- Goff was not returning under any circumstance.
- Goff's value to another team was significantly in the negative given his contract (i.e. we were going to pay to get out of it, even if as fans we saw some net-positive value).
- The organization's issues with Goff were not lost on other NFL teams.
- After we inevitably got rid of Goff, we needed a QB.

The net cost of getting out of Goff's contract was a 1st.
We weren't getting Stafford (or any other QB at Goff's level or above) for our late round 1st alone. There was competition for his services. Thus the 3rd (and perhaps the reason why the 1st for the contract instead of, say, a 2nd/3rd).

IMO, we paid a 1st round pick for the decision to extend Goff early. We then paid a 1st and 3rd for Stafford to replace him

Interesting Rodrigue comment in Athletic Article

McVay’s decision to speak critically in public about Goff for the first time wasn’t just a sign of things to come, but also seemed to serve as a message to his locker room, where some frustration rippled during the latter half of the season — the message being that an underperforming player would not be coddled, regardless of that player’s status."

I asked her what she meant by this "frustration" and what it was based upon.

Does it not seem odd that the locker room was pretty muted in its support of Goff. Sure there were some comments that the players were fired up to see Goff take the field with his thumb after Wolford went down but I wonder if this is McVay sensing frustration within his team about Goff's play. I mean his comments and behavior don't make a lot of sense for someone who is so calculating but frustration within the locker room could shed some light on this.
Do you have a link Den. I’d be interested to read this article

Tom Brady is 43. It's a passing league now so the QB's (and WR's) are taking less damage. Stafford could play another decade.
I’ll go out on a limb here and say Tom Brady hadn’t taken nearly the pounding Matt Stafford has (comparing their first 12 years)

Just keeping perspective

With that being said, we have to jump on board here and give our support

I’m doing regional hot dogs I wanna try everyone’s. I just didn’t know if when they say chopped onion it meant raw or not.

yeah not a real good record here but we don't know how much influence the coaches had on these picks. anyway if mcvay was the coach would we have made the same picks. plus if we had kept those pick we would have had some cheep talent and maybe not be in cap hell all the time. it is strange that every one says we don't need those 1st rnd picks because we pick so well later but if we pick so well later i don't understand why we could not pick well in the 1st rnd.

To be fair McVay hasn't had a 1st round pick since he's been a head coach. Which is pretty fucking nuts. Outside of the bad contracts given which have really hurt, the trades and FA signing formula we've installed has worked well for us. We've been to a super bowl, been competitive every year and I expect us to compete for the NFC title next season.

The other part of this formula is when we lose FAs we've been getting back 3rd round comp picks. We should get another couple in 2022. And our mid-round drafting has been tremendous under McVay.
