I agree, he's a tier under. And with a Gurley in his prime that's enough. But without a Girley in his prime, gotta go ELITE tier to win a SB.
I never thought Stafford was elite. And now with a hurt back and his age.

Oh I have never said Goff would be a Brady Manning or Brees but I have stated that he could be in the tier just under them
Oh, I think there is a Tier in between them, Those 3 are HOF Super Bowl winners capable of carrying a team.
Goff needs help and a system that suits his skills, Rodgers, Mahomes, Wilson, Watson, ............ There is a healthy tier in between them very healthy

Stafford has had a history of fumbles throughout his career. He also has thrown his share of INTs as well with 10 last year (averages 12/yr). So if people think that part of the equation has improved I would say probably not. What has improved is the Rams now have a QB that can make his own reads and who won't tolerate Sean in his ear constantly between plays.

What I'm hoping for is more consistency in the flow of the offense. Stafford will have the best offensive personnel in his career. Just like McVay, he also will have no excuses.
Megatron was better than anyone the Rams have. He was all the offense Stafford needed.

I'm telling you my friend at work would tell me all the time that all Stafford had to do was throw in in the vicinity of Megatron and he would come down with it.

Stafford doesn't have that luxury with the Rams.

Kupp and Woods are decent at that but Megatron was on a whole different level.

I actually would put Watson Wilson and Mahomes in that HOF tier too. Watson - still remains to be seen but with a better supporting case I think he could be HOF material too.

Goff is definitely below them as far as that goes. But not too far once he gets going and stops making dumb ass decisions which I think we would have seen next year. I could be wrong but so could all the anti Goff bashers. Now we won't know for sure because Goff just went to a terrible team (at least for next year).

or those upset about the Rams giving up two 1st rounders... Here are the Rams recent 1st round picks:

2009 Jason Smith
2010 Sam Bradford

2011 Robert Quinn
2012 Michael Brockers
2013 Tavon Austin + Alec Olgetree
2014
Greg Robinson + Aaron Donald
2015 Todd Gurley
2016 Jared Goff

yeah not a real good record here but we don't know how much influence the coaches had on these picks. anyway if mcvay was the coach would we have made the same picks. plus if we had kept those pick we would have had some cheep talent and maybe not be in cap hell all the time. it is strange that every one says we don't need those 1st rnd picks because we pick so well later but if we pick so well later i don't understand why we could not pick well in the 1st rnd.

I"ve been a supporter of McSnead, but wasn't this happening BEFORE they signed him to an extension? If so, it makes the decision to extend him unexcusable.
Not really. Like I said, teams figured out that mcvay was giving goff defensive call outs and adjustments. Obviously goff couldn't do it on his own, maybe the football iq just isn't there. And that's not something you can see right away with a qb. Obviously they took a gamble on if the light bulb eventually was going to come on. Obviously it didn't.
Worst part is I liked goff and I defended him, but that stopped late this year. I just couldn't defend him anymore.

LOL! View points are beautiful things. You are digging so hard to establish your narrative, (just like we all are).

My only issue is that everyone is trying to solve this by giving examples in a vacuum. Notice how in your example the credit is given to a WR and taken from the QB. This is the same as giving credit to wins and moving blame for loses to something else.

The overall picture is important.....................Stafford has played 10 years on a bad team. He has had ups and downs, injuries, good luck and bad. Goff has played 5 years and has all of the same. The biggest difference between Stafford and Goff now....Goffs team did everything in their power to move him while Detroit did their best to something in Staffords best interests, (they had better deals on the table).

Making statements like, "Goff just needed one more year" are most often dead on arrival quotes. "He's learning, just one more" all bad statements in a league known to be, "Not For Long".

I think we can all agree the Rams offense needs to improve in order to be a true Super Bowl caliber team. This forum has generally concluded for the offense to improve they need to strengthen the OL, add a deep threat WR and adjust the scheme. My guess is McVay concluded this could not be done and that replacing Goff with the right QB would provide that boost more effectively and quicker. In addition this would require a trade of Goff (vs cutting) because of his contract. Unfortunately for the Rams they had competition with Stafford and had to give up more than any of us would have imagined. Plus the Rams have continued to show they value known commodities vs speculative draft picks.

Yeah I too called this trade before the final seattle game of the regular season. Writing was on the wall, now you say we gave up a lot aquire an aging qb. Well we had no choice. No one was going to take on that stupid contract, plus goff's regression and now his hand injury. So the Rams really had no choice. Plus stafford is only 32 years old. QBs are playing into their late 30s to early 40s.
I'm not saying this is the best trade in the world but if we find ourselves in the playoffs again and stafford having a good to great year next year, you'll see how fast this turns from a terrible trade to a good one. Just saying giving up a couple first round picks for a good qb isn't that much. Time will tell tho

Yea a lot of you guys have made my outlook more positive as well as the fact the whole contract is being picked up. For this year the numbers have not been clarified as to how it helps exactly but the fact that it provides future flexibility moving forward is huge. Last thing if Stafford were to get dinged we do have Wolfy too.....we have Detroit on our schedule this year and I will hold firm and wish Goff the very best he did a lot for this franchise for us fans and we should start a Goff appreciation thread totally separate from any other ones we had. Like him, dislike him, he still did a lot for us and I'm grateful for that. It was time to move on though and I truly wish him well except against us!!!!

I can see myself taking shots at Stafford every time he gets sacked. I don't see the better mobility part.

I think it's more about learn to fight on the next play, but when Stafford was younger, he was more mobile, however, presently, we will have to take a wait & see approach there.

I'm definitely sad to see so many of you posting that you are done with the Rams now. I've been a Rams fan my whole life, so this blip is nothing with the years I've suffered through.

If the question is, are the Rams better now then they were yesterday morning? I think the answer is decidedly yes. Stafford is superior to Goff in nearly every category (but age). Stafford has had crap for offensive coordinators, not as good WR's as us (IMO), worse D, worse OL, etc.

Was I a fan of the compensation? Absolutely not. But, as someone else pointed out earlier, check out what the Hags gave for a safety. It near identical but we are also dumping a huge long term salary on them.

Now that I've had a chance to sit back and think about it, I'm totally bummed to not have a first in forever, but, we definitely improved at the most important position in football, and perhaps all of sports. Based on the compensation, we were never in the running for Watson anyway, no way they are taking back Goff in that deal or we are having to give them 5 firsts and players. We could not take a QB back without Goff off the books.

I do hope those that said they are done with the Rams cool off and realize we have a solid chance at making a deep run in the playoffs for the foreseeable future. #GORAMS

Geez louise, what were they thinking two years ago?

the dak and mahomes contracts. They were terrified of them resetting the market and now being unable to afford Jared. Which would hurt doubly as the Rams were still set on being the premier LA team to sell seats for So-Fi.
