There is no doubt in my mind that Matthew Stafford is a
FAR better QB than Jared Goff and I can't wait to see how he performs with a rushing attack and using play action more than he ever has in his career.
As a longtime draftnik I have little concern about losing 1st round selections at the bottom of the round to acquire proven NFL talent. Why? Because I understand that draft eligible players are rated in tiers and not rounds by the NFL personnel. ie. There are simply
not 32 highly rated blue-chip players in each draft class. There are usually just 12-20 each year. The next tier typically includes 30 - 50 players who begin to get selected in the second half of the first round and well into the 2nd round.
All that said, would I have made a trade? Yes & No.
Yes. I would have traded Jared Goff and his bloated contract to the highest bidder this offseason.
But, no I wouldn't have traded for Stafford.
Why?
I have to admit, I was really hoping that QB Bryce Perkins would win the job and excite McVay enough to come up with some sort of RGIII rookie year / Lamar Jackson type offense. And his rookie contract would allow the team to upgrade the OLine with veterans and/or keep some of the free agent defensive talent.
So my guess is that those who are bummed about the trade might be thrilled that I'm not running the show.
