It's a new day. Players have tons more agency to affect change than ever before.

There is no "tough noogies" for players anymore. It's all choices. It's always been transactional for owners... now it's that for players, too. As it should be. As much as we're fans, for everyone involved, it's a business.

Why sign the contract? Guaranteed money. Earl Thomas. This is a violent game and not even the next play is guaranteed. You ALWAYS take the money and then figure out the next move later. How many times has a player "bet on himself" only to have it blow up in his face? More often than not.

Also, gonna bang the drum on this... the Texans do not have the final say.

All Watson has to do is pay back the signing bonus, "retire" for a year and then re-enter the league as a free agent. It's what Carson Palmer did to get out of Cincy.

So the notion that the Texans can just own his rights forever if he sits out and doesn't vest a year isn't correct.

No, I don't agree with you. First, I never said the Texans holds his rights forever, but they don't have to cave into his demands. Which to your Carson Palmer example, is what the Bengals did. But I do agree with the rest of the CP story. Deshaun can take that path too. The Texans will look even more like dumbasses, and I would like to think even Cal and friends know that would be a deathblow to their PR.

Second, I don't care about the guaranteed money (which honestly as you mentioned why would he give it back for the retirement route). That's not part of my point. He damn well signed it knowing who the owner is, who Jesus Jack is, who BOB was, and their handling of players like Duane Brown, Deandre Hopkins, etc. Andre Johnson who recently publicly tweeted at how shitty their org is, was the WR coach in 2019. You don't think Deshaun and him talked? Despite all that, he signed. If he hadn't, he would've been an UFA at some point and free to sign wherever he wanted.

You don't get to leave just b/c your feelers get hurt and/or on a bad team. That's essentially what this boils down to.

So yeah, tough noogies. You signed up for this.

If your boss committed to you that your input would be appreciated in the next hire, and not only are you not included, they hire someone you are opposed to, and refuse to interview another person your suggested? You had better look for a new job yourself.
This isn’t a player asking for something that is out of line. There was a commitment made and they broke it.

Well like I said, already happened to me. Not leaving b/c this is the best job of my life.

Ultimately, he's a player. Just b/c he wasn't included doesn't mean the team was wrong. Bad optics, sure. But it sounds like to me he got his feelers hurt more than anything.

And again I'm not saying the Texans are noble in anyway. I'm just not feeling sorry for Deshaun, either.

I don't think anyone is feeling sorry for Watson.

If anyone thinks contracts are ironclad... they aren't. They're broken, renegotiated, obviated, torn up, extended, amended, etc all the time.

It's not about feelings. It's about player agency and respect. The old ways of doing things are dead and I realize some don't like it. I love it, but I get that not everyone does. Most NFL owners are completely clueless and are constantly surprised which is belligerently stupid on an amazing scale.

I dunno about you, but I don't sit down in a Kroenke jersey to watch his white, old, wrinkley ass battle Robert Kraft's white, old, wrinkley ass. I watch football for the PLAYERS.

NO ONE gives a fuck about the owners. No one roots for the owners. This game is not now and has never been about the owners. It's ALWAYS been about the game.

Problem is that the owners think they ARE the game.

I'm so damned tired of that.

I'm also not a big fan of outright lying.

Part of Watson signing was that they went to him. The arguments seem to compartmentalize that, but they're inextricable.

If the Texans don't go to him and make those promises, do we know for certain that he still signs the extension? No we don't.

We know now that he's willing to sit out the season due to the lying to him so at the very least we can infer that those promises were part of his decision making process to sign.

At the end of the day, I just don't want him going to the 9ers. I hope he gets out because he's a solid young man and a legit superstar and no one deserves to have to deal with lying bosses and a shit work environment, be they a fast food worker or one of the best QBs in the NFL.

Jmho, your mileage may vary.

I dont know why you seem to be intentionally leaving out the most important piece here. The team committed to him that he was going to be involved. So yes, they are 100% wrong. They either had no intention of honoring that when originally committed, which is wrong, or they didnt think enough of him to actually follow thru with said commitment.
In the majority of these discussions I am pro-owner. But there is no 2 sides to this, they are 100% wrong. And sorry to say, but if your employer did the same to you, they are not committed to you which means you are replaceable.

Btw how embarrassing would all of this be if Stafford or Goff failed their physicals and the trade had to be voided? Lol

It would be a disaster because we'd have a QB who failed his physical, still has a big contract, and for whom bridges have been burned between him and his head coach. And the Lions would be stuck with a QB who wanted to be traded but couldn't be due to the failed physical.

So in 108 pages according to some of you the front office and McVay should have provided the following additional support for Goff to succeed.

A LT who plays like Whitworth in his prime, a new center, a RT that can run AND pass block, TEs who can block AND be offensive weapons, in addition to Woods and Kupp a speed burner to take the top off the defense and lastly a RB who produces like Gurley.

So if I’m hearing correctly in order for Goff to have the proper supporting cast it sounds like the NFL needs to allow the Rams to have a salary cap of about $300 million dollars-and that’s just on the offensive side of the ball.
I won’t even guess at the number if you want to maintain the defense we have.

Straw man status: DESTROYED.

I have always stated - Get Goff an upgrade at center. Anyone who can block the bull rushes up the middle and can be decent in run block "support".

Yes it would be nice to give Goff a tall speed burner who can catch the 50 50 balls (don't really care if he has route ability).

And it would be nice if they could get a true run blocking TE who can also catch the ball when open.

Right now we have good TEs who can catch the ball but can't run block too well. Higbee was hurt all year so I am giving him a pass.

But all Goff needs is someone who can give him a clean pocket up the middle. He almost never had that the last two years.

And that is why McVay had to go to the short passes or roll outs because of the limited time Goff has.

But Stafford has mobility so he can probably avoid the bull rushes up the middle better than Goff. So I am giving Stafford a chance.

It was easy to bring back Saffold and Brockers back because no bridges had been burned, but in this case... Lol. People forget that the deal isn't official until mid March

I’m writing this down! There is nowhere to get a good hot dog around here and I’ve fallen in love with cooking them in the air fryer so now I’m trying different toppings
Go to your local butcher, they may carry "Boars Head" hot dogs which are natural casing or some other brand. Usually not cheap but who cares, they are the best. Or they may be able to order the Hoffy's described above. Out here in Southern Cal, Hoffy has several different styles, but I get the "Hollywood's" at Smart and Final stores.

I have been a Rams Fan for over 50 Years and always will be no matter what their record is or how much I disagree with their decisions I will always remain a Rams Fan!!! And, I know that McVay and Snead are the Experts and know a LOT more than I do and a LOT more than I ever will but I still don’t have to agree with all their decisions and as hard as I have tried I just don’t like the trade they just made with the Lions! I just have way too many concerns with Stafford’s AGE & HEALTH ISSUES!

I will also admit that I am probably one of the few BUT I still kind of like that young QB who took the Rams to the Super Bowl just a couple of years ago (At Age 24?) and who played courageously in the past playoff games with a pretty bad and painful injury (Very Gutsy performance!!!)!

I was really shocked by the trade as I thought I would be watching Goff leading the Rams for the next 10 years!!! Personally, I really do like and respect Goff and hated to see him get traded!

I sincerely hope I am wrong and Stafford leads the Rams to several Championship Seasons but I will also be hoping Goff goes on to have a good career (Just not against the Rams!)!

I hope you’re wrong too, but as an equally long Rams fan, we gotta just jump on board and roll with the change, in retrospect I sorta wish McVay would have backed off a bit on the 15 second thing and actually let Goff grow...time will be very revealing over the next couple of years
