Richard is a fiery coach who’s often seen yelling on the sideline, which would be a stark contrast from the approach Phillips took. Perhaps that’s something McVay is looking for.

Plus I have a feeling McVay might prefer that style of defense he observed under Monte Kiffin in Tampa.

Richard would be my first choice, and I hope that he comes here, but I see potential HC offers for him.

If that happens, my choice would be Jim Leonhard (Wisconsin DC) or Andy Avalos (Oregon DC).

I for one really want us to go to a 4-3 defense. I just think overall it's the best strategy for us moving forward. Teams that run the ball well are shredding the 3-4 defenses around the league.

as far as our players I don't believe it would be a huge transition. You would basically have 1 DL position and a LB position you may have to switch out...but to me Fowler could play 4-3 DE well..... you'd have guys like Ebukam and Oko who you'd have to see if they could fit .... but our LB group of Littleton(hopefully), Reeder, Howard, Natrez Patrick, Micah Kiser.... we could put a set of linebackers together out of the that group who could fit the 4-3 ….with probably only having to switch out 1 guy maybe..... Johnson and Rapp with Marquis gives us 3 solid Safeties, and Ramsey, Hill, Robey Coleman, Williams, Long are solid group of CBs as well..... we have picks to add depth...

as far as the DC... wouldn't want Barry to get it..

I'd love to see Marvin Lewis come in...

and I'm glad to read about us looking to be a more scheme based team that makes adjustments ..

I dont know why folks think this will mean a switch to 4-3. Given that he hired a 3-4 Defensive Co-ordinator when he set up his first staff you've got to assume that's what McVay prefers. Otherwise why would we have switch from 4-3 when he came in?

I like Wade, loved the hire!

Loved the SB Def run....

But with the Tampa, especially the Baltimore game and when we needed the Dallas game the Defense did not show up. Worse they didn't look like they had a clue as to how to play Defense. It wasn't like the 1st Seattle game where RW makes a PERFECT throw to win - that happens at this level. Getting embarrassed has to open some eyes. To me the Dallas game looked a lot like the Baltimore game.... Anybody realistically believe that every 2020 team won't start with that game plan?

Will be really interested in who is hired. There is a risk that we can do worse - a lot worse than Wade, but that risk was balanced out in my mind that 2020 would see more, not less of the 40+ point defense collapses next year.

Kinda fucked up.

Totally disagree Wade and his defense were directly responsible for 3 losses where the offense had no chance - Baltimore alone the first 6 times they had the ball they scored.

He never fixed the Run D. McVay/Snead gave him everything to succeed and he couldn't.

One comment on keeping 3-4 vs change to 4-3. It's almost akin to a sub package these days as nickel is the predominant package in NFL. Also, Wade's 3-4 hasn't always been typical two-gap and his version of 3-4 prob has more in common with traditional 4-3 than traditional 3-4. It would prob not be that hard to transition to 4-3 but OLB/DE would be biggest issue.
