1. Wade suspected the writing was on the wall when the team parted company with DL coach (and Phillips confidant) Bill Johnson last offseason. There were some indications the defensive staff was going to get younger and more scheme-driven under McVay moving forward.

2. From the team perspective, I think there was some frustration over relying on the fundamentals of playing sound football rather than a premium placed on scheming and changing looks to expose weaknesses. Too much reliance on just beating strength on strength.

3. Something interesting: I truly believe that when Sean McVay went through the experience of seeing New England largely change its stripes in the Super Bowl in terms of how it attacked the Rams, it gave him some food for thought in terms of being able to turn a scheme on a dime.

4. McVay not only wants to be more involved in some of the defensive conceptualizing moving forward, but he wants coaches challenging themselves to be more creative every single week based on the opponent. Be better physically in-game, but think better mentally in preparation.

5. I’d keep an eye out on Joe Barry as a potential replacement for Phillips as defensive coordinator, if he doesn’t end up in the role at USC.(me: please USC hire Barry from us) There will also be one or two other staff tweaks, including one on offense that could raise some eyebrows.

So if Barry is interviewing for the USC job hopefully he's been told by McVay, he will not be the new DC and please USC, hire Joe! Albeit for only one year as that is the life expectancy for the Clay Helton regime.

.

well we know the rams won't be hiring some big name, control freak dc.

mcvay wants in on the defensive game plans.

expect some young guy who is happy to work with the hc on the defense.

So far none of Dabo's assistants have really jumped ship. They are paid well and always get top level players to coach. We'll see how long that lasts though before one jumps.

If USC hires Joe Barry as DC, then I am going with the theory that Clay Helton is trying to sabotage USC completely.

I really hate Clay Helton. He has the 80th ranked recruiting class, he had the only losing record for USC in the last 20 years, their defense has always sucked every year he is head coach, I could go on.

Sorry, he just needs to do the Los Angeles Rams this favor...Hire Joe, he'll be great.

So if they go 4-3, then Morgan Fox and Justin Lawler figure in at DE. Maybe Fowler as well, if he returns, or could he be a 5th rusher at OLB? Can he cover well enough to play OLB in a 4-3? Same with Ebukam.

Can Kiser play MLB? Might be best suited for that.

Then of course the draft would likely bring more DE's and LBs.

I think Donald, Gaines and Day could handle DT, if they can get a few DE's that can play.

oh please USC hire him, I don't want him as our DC!!!!!!

i doubt he will be the Rams DC, if he's interviewing at USC, but I would like him to get this job, so the Rams can have a completely different look on their defensive staff.

I personally think this is a good move by McVay. He was the one who hired Wade so what makes you guys think he wont make another good hire for the defense? I think Wade had his chance to get this D over the top to at least a top 10 Defense and never did so. I don't expect him to hire within but I expect him to at least stick with the same 3-4 scheme because of cap and draft restrictions for the next couple of seasons. I do agree with his assessment in being better prepared scheme wise and to have more flexibility to change scheme based upon what the other team is doing. And If i remember correctly that's what EVERYONE'S biggest problem was this year, is the defense not be able to adjust or not adjusting to what the offense was showing. I circle back around to games like the Dallas and Baltimore game. We obviously weren't prepared to handle a downhill rushing attack and we lacked the players / scheme to slow them down.
