Joe Barry runs both a standard 3-4 and a hybrid 3-4 so he understands the differences. He also was on the redskins staff at the same time as McVay. That said his first year as DC Barry's unit finished 28th overall. His second and last year they improved to 19th. His success is primarily on the college level and IMO he's one of those coaches best suited for that level of play. He's not a successful NFL level DC IMO. If Snead is truly committed to a championship-caliber defense then I simply don't see him as the guy they need. I think this interview is due diligence as Barry is being looked at by USC. I think they already know who they want and it's why they were comfortable in not extending Wade. They cut him loose early as a goodwill gesture to allow him to sign elsewhere.
On the other hand I'm not happy they are keeping Kromer and Dickerson. It's imperative that the o-line improve their gap blocking and inside zone technique. That lack of fundamentals is the problem in the run attack. Too many times the o-line looks confused as to who blocks who.
IMO they need to start calling out the MIKE before the snap. The MIKE in blocking assignment calls isn't pointing out the middle LB. Rather it IDs the focal point of the blocking assignments. The blockers know where their assignment block is in relationship to the MIKE call. This way even if the defense aligns in an unexpected way the blockers know who they need to block. The fact they don't do this routinely is Kromer's fault and his failure alone. It's why the 0-line looks confused as the defensive front 7 aligns in unexpected ways. There is no question that DC's have noted this and use it to their advantage. This MIKE call is especially helpful when you have young inexperienced players. They didn't need it last year because they had a veteran o-line.
The reason I have said many of the o-line issues can be traced to bad blocking calls by the o-line is because when you watch the o-line pre-snap you see the center and usually the RG pointing just prior to the snap. They are making the MIKE call. If the blocking is messed up like too often it is then the call was wrong. Again another indicator that the coaching is bad.
Merlin in his excellent breakdowns has pointed out multiple instances of missed assignment blocks. So it's not like it's not evident to the coaching staff who are supposed to break down the blocking on each play. But again from game to game the issue continues. This is why I've been saying that Blythe has been culpable in those bad calls both while at RG and Center.
