Wade is a legend but I agree with the move . Question is do they stay 3-4 or go back to a 4-3 ?

Personally I like the 4-3 with bigger guys up front and putting more emphasis on stopping the run .

Should be interesting.
I think that's a misconception due to Wade's hybrid 3-4, and we do have the bigger nose tackles, and I don't think you're getting any bigger with a 4-3 front anyway. Traditionally, in 3-4 Donald is a DE, and in 4-3 he's your DT, and in a hybrid it's really not much different because almost everyone is playing one gap anyway.

But the 4-3 tackles are typically smaller and faster than 3-4 ends. So our problem stopping the run was really more to do with size and gap responsibility in Wade's hybrid 3-4.

I think it's all about where you want Donald to play, because I think he can be a total nightmare from 3T or 5T. Also, SJD proved this season that he is more than adequate at 1T and 0T with Gaines providing solid competition and possible 3T as well.

Even Wade's 3-4 under was successful stopping the run when the right players were out there, but he was playing wack a mole with prioritizing the run/pass, and I think a lot of that was due to the secondary.

Some thoughts on the questions surrounding the future Rams D 43 vs 34 I see no concerns with our interior signed DL'ers that can play in the 43 D in 2020.

Naturally Aaron Donald would return to his natural 3 tech post that he played in 2014 through 2016. Tanzel Smart would be entering his 4th NFL season would be AD's back up.

The other 43 D starting post would have three very young DT's competing for that position. Greg Gaines, SJ-D & Marquise Copeland, all of which will be entering their 2nd season.

The very big real concern would be the two starting 43 D ends. In truth the Rams do not have any bona fide starters. 2nd season Justin Lawler who does have 43 DE size 6-4/265 is signed. Another potential prospect would be Landis Durham who was a PS player this past season. Durham has some size @ 6-3 260. I expect that Og Okoronwko who is over 6-2/255 would start @ the RDE post in 2020.

I would also expect that RFA Morgan Fox 6-3 275 lbs would stand a better chance to be resigned IF the Rams did shift to a 43 D Fox would be the probable top starting prospect @ LDE. Fox would be entering his 5th season in the NFL in 2020.

Allen wasn't quite ready - made worse by playing next to a first year starter on his left, and then having different young guys to his right. It was ambitious to have first time starters right next to each other, all the more so when the entire interior were new later on. They will factor that in next season, of course.

Damn shame about this whole thing. Hope nothing but the best for Wade. Yeah Defense was allover the place, but so was everything else. Just kind of feels like Wade was the fall guy in the grand scheme of things and others should share the same amount of blame. Good Luck Mr. Phillips glad you were a part of this organization...
I don't think Wade was the "fall guy". I think this is about going with a different defensive approach that involves a 43 base defense.

I'm sure McVay and Wade have parted on good terms.

Sign Whit to cap friendly deal with opportunity to move into coaching. This allows Noteboom to take his time to recovery. Sign a stud OC/OG. Starting lineup would be Whit/Note, Corbett, OC/Allen, Edwards, Evans/Hav.

If you are going to hold Wade accountable, why not hold Snead, McVay, and Kromer accountable as well? How do you separate one from the other? It seems to me that for several games we all lauded the way Wade would scheme/make adjustments after halftime. And how about that super bowl run last year, when the D carried them. And for the past 3 years, besides flipping the defensive backfield, quite frequently I might add, did the Rams ever give Wade a high draft pick for a linebacker or defensive lineman? Outside of Gaines, who is a rookie, I can't think of any other decent draft pick.

I understand that change is inevitable. I just like these guys when they become Rams, and it's hard to see them go. Especially guys like Wade Philips.
Wade had more talent on this defense than probably any team in the league. Fowler, Donald, Littleton, Talib, Ramsey, Peter's, Brockers, Suh, Matthews... who am I missing? I'm sure Wade had a ton of say who he wanted on his defense. I highly doubt he failed bc he didnt get a high draft pick, which we havent had since hes been here bc we've been winning. We had a more talented team this season in terms of defense but we got blown out embarrassingly multiple times on national TV. Weddle has been a bust, Peter's is looking like the stud we thought we were getting in BMore but was a dud here, stopping the run has never been established, Donald is getting double and triple teamed yet noone else is benefitting, our secondary looks great at times and others they look lost. Then theres the head scratchers we had this preseason where we had what looked like a damn good find in an lb in Dakota Allen, yet we went with a slow guy in Reeder.

I understand some of this may not be all on Wade. There are a lot of coaches involved that together could be the culprit, but there is also alot that we dont see that McVay and Snead DO see. The fact that Wade was not extended makes me tend to believe that the things our defense was struggling with was probably majority his fault.

There will be no difficult transition to the 4-3, we never had the personnel for the 3-4 in the first place, and still dont.

And I want a BIG name guy, no 50% chance of success, I want a track record.

If it were up to me, I would hire Jeff Fisher, if he would actually come back as DC.
If Fisher was any good, he'd have had offers by now. It's been - what - three years? And he's said he wants back in.

Nope, nobody has even sniffed as far I can tell.

Williams has stayed employed, Fisher remains unemployed.

Tells you all you need to know. Hard pass.

After three years Ram's D still mid pack.

That, and those embarrassingly disgraceful performances against TB, Balt, and Dallas sealed WP's fate.

Have to do a better job to remain on McVay's team.

I like our HC's approach.
I was at the DAL game. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Wade was comfortable. I felt at ease with a guy who had all that experience.

But coaches get stale... their messages to the players get stale.

It was probably time for a move.

I hope they get another seasoned NFL defensive mind (maybe not as old as SOB).

No college for me, please.

I think the outcome of the Peter's trade and Ramsey sign was pretty much a sign Wade might be on his way out this season. Wade had to have wanted Peter's when we got him, and yet he never became more than a #2 cb. He was terrible when Talib was out and Wade never adjusted to his strengths. So Talib gets injured again this season and the writing is on the wall for what we're in store for after seeing last season. The Rams then have one option to save their secondary, that's Ramsey, and it cost us 2 first round picks. Peter's goes to BMore and turns their decent at best D into one of the best in the league. Meanwhile, we keep getting blown out. If Wade had tweaked his D to Peter's strengths, we would have no need for Ramsey and would still have 2 first round picks. JMO anyway.

I'd trust Whit to decide when he is done. He's is on a decline but he was still damn good!

I so want to see Donald lined up in the backfield.

Wade did get players, to the detriment of the oline. Unlike last year however he was unable to pull the d together for a playoff run.

Sorry to see him leave but McVay apparently felt he needed to act and the team is ultimately his responsibility.

Good Lord, Belichick Jr. as our D Coach, can you imagine?

The conversation before next year’s Rams-Pats game:

Bill: Hey son, can you pass along those tapes?
Junior: Dad, we’ve been over this...

He will probably chip his kid in his sleep with a mic or something.

Well... Belichek's son is becoming quite a talked up coach these days. More so for his ridiculous haircut and the fact he sounds exactly like his dad when he talks. But he has also been part of that defensive staff that for a while was looking like one of the best all time for the first half of the season. But... can we lower ourselves to such depths? It would be an interesting pairing though between McVay and him.
McVay is already reported to have struck a friendship with Bill.
His son actually could be a possiblity, imo.
Not that I like it.

I have NO idea what the Rams are gonna do to replace Wade and my biggest concern is the guy they bring is not as good as Wade (offense left the D hung out to dry a lot this last yr)...

I have faith they'll make the right hire...

Unless its fuckin Joe Barry...

4-3 or 3-4

Whichever D is best suited for Donald is the D they should run.

Build around Donald. Don’t nullify the best D player in the NFL.

Please hire accordingly.
