Could be a cheaper alternative to Fowler @den-the-coach. Good age at 26.3. Article has estimate at 7.4 Million for four years. Still not cheap but, doable.

One of the Denver Broncos’ more high profile unrestricted free agents this offseason will be linebacker Shaquil Barrett. Undrafted out of Colorado State in 2014, Barrett has spent his entire five-year career in Denver.

As a rotational pass rusher, he has been productive and because he played his college ball locally, he has latched on with much of the fanbase.

Barrett has played in 61 games over the course of the last four seasons, racking up 14 sacks, seven forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries to go along with 151 tackles. He is one of those players that makes the most of his opportunities when his number is called.

However, the Broncos may not be able to shell out what he is looking for this offseason, both financially and in terms of playing time.

Barrett had a base salary of $2.9 million in 2018, but according to Spotrac, could get a contract in the neighborhood of four years and $29.4 million, or an average of about $7.4 million per year as a free agent.

That seems a bit steep for the Broncos.

On top of that, the team willing to pay Barrett that kind of money will also likely be looking to make him a starter, something he hasn’t been in Denver. In 2018, Barrett saw action on just 25.5 percent of the team’s defensive snaps, according to Pro Football Reference.

He’ll be looking for a better situation, one in which he can make more money and become more of an impact player. There will likely be several teams lining up to make that happen for the 26-year old edge defender.

Though Barrett has gone from an undrafted project to a solid defensive player and a fan favorite, it’s likely that the Broncos will need to prepare for life after him in 2019.

Crazy numbers all around for free agents but this is stupid crazy for Fowler.

VIEW PROFILE
Dante Fowler
LAR • LB • 56
  • Contract package: $72.5 million for five years
  • Overall guarantees: $40 million
  • Fully guaranteed at signing: $32.5 million
  • First three years: $47 million
Fowler got a chance to reinvent himself when the Rams gave the Jaguars a 2019 third-round pick and a 2020 fifth-round pick to get him at last season's trading deadline in late October. His career never quite got untracked in Jacksonville. Fowler tore his left ACL in Jacksonville's first minicamp practice a week after being the third overall pick in the 2015 draft. Although Fowler had a career high eight sacks in 2017, the Jaguars declined to pick up their fifth-year option on him for 2019. $14.2 million was a pretty steep price for someone who operated primarily as a situational pass rusher.

Fowler wasn't a consistent pass rushing force after his arrival in Los Angeles but more than validated the trade against the Saints in the NFC Championship Game. His overtime hit on quarterback Drew Brees while he was throwing caused the interception which helped set up the game winning field goal. Fowler also tied for the Rams' postseason lead in sacks with 1.5.

It wouldn't be surprising if some team gets seduced by the potential that made Fowler an early first-round pick and his playoff performance. Not having the fifth-year option exercised may work in Fowler's favor in a manner similar to how it did with 2014 fourth overall pick Sammy Watkins, but not necessarily to the same degree. The wide receiver received a $16 million per year deal from the Chiefs last March in free agency.

With Weddle signed, what further hidden gems will the Rams reveal when the legal tampering period begins on Monday. Snug up your cinches, and dig in your cleats, and hold on tight, for the wizardry of Snead and McVay is coming.

I predict a vet edge player. But I have NO idea which one they like most. Lol.

The “legal tampering” period in NFL will help clarify market for Rams in free agency

When free agency opens on March 13 at 1 p.m. PT, we’ll probably already have a decent idea of where some of the top players on the open market are going to sign.

That’s in large part because of the so-called “legal tampering” period that exists for teams and agents starting on March 11.

Per the NFL rules, “Clubs are permitted to contact, and enter into contract negotiations with, the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2018 player contracts at 4:00 p.m., New York time, on March 13.”

So while the teams and players cannot have any direct contact until free agency opens, their agents can still negotiate for them. That means for any of the Rams’ upcoming unrestricted free agents, Los Angeles will get a much clearer picture for what it may take to retain their services.

“[W]hat we have found too, in the past, is sometimes it’s really good for a player to — even if we want a player and they want to be here — to go test the market at least in that 48-to-72-hour window and get a feel for their reality,” general manager Les Snead said at the Combine. “That way they’re not guessing, we’re not guessing, and you get a true sense of what the market is instead of speculation.”

That could be a big deal for players like left guard Rodger Saffold, safety Lamarcus Joyner, outside linebacker Dante Fowler, and defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh, who each may have robust markets for their services in 2019 and beyond.

Snead used the example of wide receiver Sammy Watkins from last year to illustrate how this period can clarify things for both the club and player.

“We let Sammy Watkins go test the market, and really, that’s the best thing about the 72-hour window,” Snead said. “Last year with Sammy, hey, his asking price became too steep for us, so we decided to let him move on. So with that, how do we react after that? OK, we lost Trumaine and Sammy. If we’re disciplined in free agency, we could probably recoup two third-rounders. Oh by the way, though, we did lose a nice offensive weapon, so how are we going to solve that? Then, here’s what might be available in the draft. Then you go, OK, we’ve got a really good offense, so do we want to add a young guy in there or do we want to get a proven guy? But we’d still like a young guy, so then you start looking at who might be available. I think when you do this, you’ve got to have contingency plans. You’ve got to walk through the scenarios and then execute those scenarios.”

The Rams were able to do that by adding wide receiver Brandin Cooks via trade, and then extending him on a long-term deal — effectively making things work out for all parties involved.

So as the Rams continue to sort out free agency, look for early next week to be a significant checkpoint in Los Angeles’ endeavors to both sign its own players, and possibly start to go after new ones.

I think we grab Shaq Barrett. Cost will be solid for us, he gets a chance to start, and he has been very effective when he has played. I really think its a great fit and keeps our cap space.

Joyner is gone, see ya

Fowler I'm luke warm on, no big contract please

I hope we can keep Suh, he was excellent down the stretch

We need to get Saffold resigned

I'd love us to find a big receiver who can (and will) go up and get the ball.

We can't continue to count on Goff being available for 16 games. We must get a reliable back up who can actually run the offense

I'd really like to see Jordan reed at least come in for a physical. Everett has played pretty well but hes just not the playmaker that reed is. And if a receiver goes down hed be a better option then Reynolds or whoever our 4th wideout would probably be. Could probably get him for a late round pick seeing as he may be a cap casualty.

The TE position has been a dissapointment overall the last 2 years and maybe because we expect so much from 2 highly drafted players working with mcvay, however, with gurley getting less touches and defenses likely to copy the patriots strategy, it would be encouraging to see the TE position become a reliable source of serious damage.

I'm with you wolf. Reed is a potential "buy low" option that could significantly improve us. Lots of questions with it, things would have to align for us a bit for it to happen, but I would like to see Goff's options increase in the passing game.

Isn’t Reed under contract with the Skins for 3 more years?
