He just commands so much respect. Going from joking with Peters to guys saying yes sir. I’ve never seen a coach quite like him.

Well I love McVay.... he is pure football savant

But when you are winning, respect is given out in droves. When you are losing.....

Refocused, NFL Week 1: Los Angeles Rams 33, Oakland Raiders 13
BY PFF ANALYSIS TEAM

USATSI_11222696_168384674_lowres.jpg

The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Oakland Raiders on Monday night, 33-13, concluding the first week of the 2018 NFL regular season.

PFF’s ReFocused series this season features immediate takeaways and a key to the victory from two Senior Analysts who graded the performance, watching every player, on every play of the game.

ANALYST TAKEAWAYS

Quarterback Jared Goff didn’t have the best night in terms of accuracy, but it’s clear that Goff and head coach/play-caller Sean McVay seem determined to stretch the field. Wide receiver Brandin Cooks was heavily targeted throughout the game and looks to be the focal point of the Rams’ passing offense.

Running back Todd Gurley barely came off the field, which shows just how important he is to the Rams’ offense. Throughout the game, Gurley displayed his normal burst and athleticism with the ball in his hands.

The Rams talented defense showed up in a big way, forcing three turnovers and producing numerous pressures on quarterback Derek Carr. Aaron Donald was at the forefront of it all and consistently got the better of Raiders right guard Gabe Jackson.

The two new additions in the secondary, Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters, limited Jordy Nelson and Amari Cooper to a combined 4 catches for 32 yards. If they can continue the same kind of dominance against opposing receivers, this defense will quickly become a nightmare to face up against.

With Jon Gruden returning to the sideline as their Head Coach, it was a night of miscues for the Raiders. They turned the ball over three times on offense as quarterback Derek Carr threw three interceptions. His second interception in the middle of the fourth quarter took all the wind out of the sails, as they were driving to make it a one-score game.

Veteran tight end Jared Cook had a great game, his only miscue seemed to be late in the game when he stopped on a crossing route, leading to a pick-six for the Rams. Cook ended the night with nine catches for 180 yards, with a chunk of that yardage coming after the catch while he dragged defenders behind him.

The Raiders defense wasn’t able to generate a consistent pass-rush all game. After Khalil Mack‘s defensive display on Sunday night, it’s become apparent that the Raiders will miss his services this year.

Bruce Irvin had the play of the night for the Raiders’ defense, as he stayed after his rush and was able to strip the ball away from quarterback Jared Goff, who had held onto the ball for too long in the pocket.

Keys to the game

Los Angeles: The Rams offense hit their stride in the second half and were able to rip off some long scoring drives and drain the clock.

Oakland: Oakland turned the ball over three times and were penalized 11 times for 155 yards. That’s not a formula for success.

Replays also showed Donald being held a few times and he did draw a penalty during another play. The Raiders had their fair share of offensive penalties thanks to that Ram front.

Lot of holding.

Typical Raiders 11 penalties for 155 yards

This was a flawed first half. Rust, sluggishness, what ever you want to to call it. This team has corrections to make before Sunday.

The Rams didn't play against air.

The Raiders were ready, the stadium was off the hook...I am not giving the Rams a pass but, the Raiders brought it early and gave the Rams some problems.

The Rams were the snowball going downhill, picking up momentum...

Exactly, the guy has honest to god all pro physical talent. Just never seemed to care. Him, Britt, and Quick were quite the trio of under achieving physical specimens. Thank you GOD we don't have to watch that crap every week now.
Cook was not very consistent and finally blew up at the qb and the offense, causing Fisher to dump him. In fairness and even more clearly in retrospect, his situation was like others caught in a dismal middle school offense which couldn't do anything right. He was open lots of times when the ball wasn't thrown, and when he was lots of throws were badly timed or inaccurate.

Frankly I wish we had him now. Imagine what he could do in this offense.

Well, there were many, many factors that contributed to this Ram win, but here are some that I think are fundamental...

McVay was running those sweeps and fake sweep handoffs to great effect. Four different players now instead of just Tavon. Got good yardage when handed off, including Gurley’s TD, but froze the D when it was a fake and Goff passed. Kept doing it, too. Musta driven the Raiders half crazy.

McVay had Goff go deep just enough to scare the hell outta the Raiders. Goff just missed on two by mere inches and Cooks drew two huge PI’s. Highly effective. When Goff gets the range, look out!

Both McVay and Wade made extremely effective halftime adjustments. Looked like a completely different team in the 2nd half. I used to envy other teams that could do that when the Rams couldn’t. Rams don’t win this game without both coaches making their adjustments.

McVay IS “Mozart with a clipboard”, or whomever Schrager said. His O runs often look like passes and his passes often look like runs. Makes D’s hesitate with good results for the Rams. He’s a prodigy, IMO.

Most impressed as you say by the show of character. No letdown from a rusty start.

Instead a totally professional, clinical dismantling of the Raiders in the second half on the road in a rowdy stadium. A brilliantly coached, halftime adjusted, knucklehead free team playing nearly mistake free football. Not just talent, not just coaching: ability to show real concentration for as long as needed to overtake and eventually steamroll the opposition.

Better than a blowout, where the emotion and good plays snowball in your favor. Much more indicative of a team with scary potential to raise and sustain their execution as needed to win games.

Donald got held a LOT. Maybe now that Quinn is gone, the refs are going to let them hold Donald more. LOL. Several times the OLinemen had him around the neck from the side or from behind. Also caused a couple holding penalties that were called. Overall not a bad game. Total Rushing for Oakland (despite what the announcers would have had you believe) was under 100 yards, I believe. Lynch with just 41 I think.

Great to see the offense run down the length of the field to congratulate Peters. Love it.
I agree! Love to show Rams fans and the dumb shit sports media this narrative about not being a 'team' and 'issues' are going to make things implode is such far off bullshit. This teams make up from the the Owner down is totally different than what has happened before. Literally the perfect storm with so many things coming together for us. Now it's just a point of going out there doing it as a team!

My Pleasure man! In years past I would just see things myself and finally snapped that the same things I find others might be able to enjoy here on ROD as well! You guys are really finding some quality stuff lately as well!

ps. It's amazing to see the whole team practically come over and celebrate that pick 6! This is a special team, the planets are lining up!

UNSUNG HEROES

Blythe....A +
Was good all night. Very effective run blocking and getting to the second level.

Littleton....any "wait and see" reservations I had about Littleton are gone. Very active and physical. Around the ball all night.

Brown.....Malcolm Brown didn't get a lot of snaps but every one was a positive contribution. A couple of runs for positive yardage and a couple of nice catches out of the backfield, one for a first down on a scoring drive. McVay obviously comfortable with Brown in there.

Agreed about Littleton. Needs to work on coverage but man it was nice to see some of his “sticks” after watching Ogletree’s whiffs and getting tossed by various ball carriers the past couple of years.
