Not a fan even though we’d have been playoff team seven.

Why do they keep dicking around with this dumb 17 game regular season & 3 pre-season game BS ? Just make it 18 & 2 and add a couple more Byes to lengthen the season, increase revenue for everyone and help keep the players better rested and healthier. Why is this so bloody difficult ?

While I agree this is stupid, I assume that they are having more problems getting teams to agree to give up a home game for an international game - this way they will have 16 international games slotted in.

I dislike it - if they wanted to increase the value of TV contracts, add an extra bye week for every team and make the season 18 weeks long. That would add revenue ultimately from TV and improve play quality since players would get an extra week to recover during the season, and the networks would have an extra week to show games. But as is usual, they will do something stupid.

Looks like the players are getting some for the increased regular season game. I still think they need to do away with the practice squad and inactive on gameday and expand the roster.

That doesn't make any sense at all. If an extra 1.5% of revenue equates to $5b then the league is making $333b. I don't think maths is a strong suit for Schefter.

.
Likely implying that number over the term of the deal. Also I don't think he's talking new money either more the total revenue for the players over say a 5 year deal.

He actually said shifting $5b to the players side. I guess he meant $5b total revenue per year. It was just poorly worded.

Still, I read the league made $14b in 2018. The revenue keeps going up so the numbers still don't make sense. He's probably talking out of his arse about the numbers.

Well 7 playoff teams would make the top seed mean a lot more. Extra playoff games... I can deal with that.

More playoff teams expected under new NFL CBA, sources say

If and when a transformational collective bargaining agreement is finalized -- and there is now mounting optimism it could be done sometime in the next week -- it is expected to change the NFL's playoff structure as it is currently constituted for next season, league sources told ESPN.

Under the current CBA proposal that NFL owners are pushing for, the playoff field would be expanded to seven teams from each conference, while the regular season would be increased to 17 games per team and the preseason shortened to three games per team, sources said.

As part of the proposed playoff format, only one team from each conference would receive a first-round bye as opposed to the two that currently do, league sources said. That would mean a revised postseason schedule that includes six games on wild-card weekend, with three on Saturday and three on Sunday.

The changes to the NFL's playoff format would take effect for the 2020 season, assuming the new CBA is ratified beforehand. Had the proposed format been in place this past season, the Los Angeles Ramsand Pittsburgh Steelers would have been the next teams included in the expanded playoff field.

"That's been agreed to for a long time," one source familiar with the CBA talks said about the NFL's new playoff structure. "There wasn't a lot of disagreement to that issue."

Additionally, the players on the teams that earn a first-round bye will receive postseason pay for that weekend. That was not the case under the current CBA, which has always rankled some players.

Now the sides are trying to work through the final issues, including getting the players to sign off on a 17-game regular season. That has yet to be agreed to, and it would not take effect until 2021 at the earliest.

As part of the deal now on the table, players would go from a 47% revenue share under the current deal to 48% share at 16 games, and then to a 48.5% share if they go to 17 games, shifting $5 billion of revenue to the players' side.

"The new CBA's not done, there's no term sheet yet, there still are issues being negotiated, but I'd be very surprised if there's not a new CBA for the new league year," the source said.

3 Biggest Issues With Proposed New NFL Playoff Format

The NFL has decided for no reason to mess with perfection and attempt to change the playoff format in the newest CBA to allow a seventh team to enter the mix. Expanding the playoffs from 12, a perfect number of teams to admit from a group of 32, makes little sense at face value.

When you dig into the nitty gritty of it and really analyze it from an investigative perspective, however, it makes even less sense. These are just three of what could be a dizzying long list of problems with this format.

3. Only One Team Gets a Bye

Under the new proposal, the No. 2 seed would play a home game against the No. 7 seed in the first week of the playoffs, while the No. 1 seed with home field advantage gets a bye. While this does make the fight for No. 1 more competitive, it also gives top seeds such a huge advantage over their competitors. When two evenly-matched teams meet up, some crowd noise and fresh legs might just be the difference maker that puts the No. 1 seed in the next round.

2. Underserving Teams Will Get In

Assuming that the seventh postseason team in each conference functions as another Wild Card team, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Rams would have made the postseason in 2019. This means we would have had to witness Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs take Devlin Hodges behind the woodshed while Jared Goff got pounded in the dirt by Green Bay. Is this what the NFL wants so badly?

1. It Isn't the Old Format

"If it isn't broke, don't fix it." The current 12-team model is the very opposite of broken in how it was constructed, but the league seems set on trying to re-invent the wheel and give fans a new spin on the postseason that no one asked for. We might get two extra playoff games, but is that really worth it?

Owners, players could vote on new CBA by end of week

NFL owners and NFL Players Association representatives could vote on the proposed new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) by the end of the week, reports Dan Graziano of ESPN.

All 32 owners are scheduled to attend a meeting Thursday in New York City, while the NFLPA reps have a conference call arranged for Friday. Approval on a new CBA requires three-fourths of the owners and two-thirds of the player reps to vote yes.

The NFL and NFLPA have met several times in an effort to hammer out a new agreement before the 2020 league year begins in mid-March. The existing CBA will expire after the upcoming campaign.

The greatest sticking point between the NFL and NFLPA has been the owners' insistence on adding a 17th regular-season contest. The proposed CBA would give the NFL an option to expand the regular season by one game at some point between 2021 and 2023.

In exchange for the 17th game, owners have offered players a greater revenue share, changes to the league's drug policy, and revisions to its disciplinary procedures.
