Which he won't agree to, of course. He can sign elsewhere for more.

I see this as negotiation with other teams mainly, to get a low pick rather than cutting him. Doesn't his money get guaranteed in a day or so?

No, I think somebody posted a few days ago that in his contract, 2018 salary gets guaranteed a few days after the league year begins. I don't remember who posted that though.

Something is going on. Maybe a trade does materialize - I can't put my finger on why - but I think Tavon takes a pay cut and stays a Ram.

Pay cut? He's only going to cost 3m, how much of a cut is he going to take? 1mill? That really make a difference?
I don't see where a restructure makes sense as it would commit the Rams to him for more than 1 season.
Ok @flv straighten me out and explain why I'm wrong.

You're right, I remember reading that too.
A few more beers and a few more hits on the noggin and I'm sure it will come back to me which discussion it was in. Who knows, maybe it was earlier in this one.
Oh great, now I'll have to back and check. Will my work ever be done?

An extra 1 mill this year could make the difference between signing John Sullivan or not. Or Barwin or not. It's not small thing. I really can't see him taking a pay cut though, think it's trade or release.

Though if he wants to make up for the highway robbery that was his contract, he could renegotiate for vet min with performance bonuses (and hopefully some unlikely to be earned bonuses like X amount of playing time at Flanker).

it would be nice if he only took his bonus money. $5m is nothing to sneeze at considering he made $21m the last 2 seasons.

but then the rams aren't gonna give him $9m+ per year for 3 years after this season.

We will know soon. Tavon has a $5 million roster bonus due on March 16. If he is still a Ram on Friday he will likely be a Ram in 2018.
I found it! Tavon gets a $5 million roster bonus on the 16th whether he's on the Ram's roster, or if he's released. The only way we don't pay that bonus is if he's traded today. Can anyone here say 6th round draft pick?

Found it. @flv says that the salary is guaranteed after the roster bonus is paid tomorrow. Which is why someone said the Rams were planning on cutting him before midnight if he can't be traded.

If we would tie the last two picks to him in exchange for offloading his entire contract that would be a win. Another possibility is that maybe Tavon would be willing to shave something ($1.5m?) off his contract for the opportunity to veto any trade deal. It would put him in charge of his destiny and make him a more worthwhile keeper.

So, after considering all of this, we can assume, if Tavon isn't gone tonight, he'll be on the Roster next Season!!

Maybe we can trade him to New England for a low draft pick, as I'm sure they'd be willing to to throw in a bag of deflated balls; you know, the kind that Brady likes to play with.
