We need this kind of cap creativity, but I don't think the dip Tony Pastoor could figure it out.

They already did it last year with Floyd per the above article.

and Leonard Floyd ($3.3M), which is a big reason for their being over the cap. Floyd’s dead money comes from his one-year contract signed last year, which had a void year in 2021 and an automatic $3.3 million in dead cap.

NFL sets salary cap at $182.5M: How much space do the Rams have?
Cameron DaSilva Wed, March 10, 2021,

Teams across the league finally know how much they’ll be able to spend this offseason after the NFL set the salary cap for the 2021 season. After the floor was initially set at $175 million, and then upped to $180 million, the league settled on an amount higher than both levels.

The salary cap will be $182.5 million in 2021, down from $198.2 million last year. It’s the first time in the last eight years that the salary cap didn’t increase at least $10 million, a clear result of the lost revenue due to the pandemic.

With the cap set, the focus turns to the Rams and how much space they’ll have to play with during free agency. As of now, space is something they don’t have. According to Over The Cap, the Rams are over the limit by $33.14 million, needing to get under the cap by March 17 when the new league year begins.

The Rams are carrying $34.125 million in dead money from Jared Goff ($22.2M), Todd Gurley ($8.4M) and Leonard Floyd ($3.3M), which is a big reason for their being over the cap. Floyd’s dead money comes from his one-year contract signed last year, which had a void year in 2021 and an automatic $3.3 million in dead cap.

While being in the red is never a good thing, the Rams have some ways to clear cap space. Five players are candidates to have their contracts restructured, potentially freeing up a total of $56 million. They won’t restructure all of those contracts, but Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey are obvious candidates.

No matter what, though, the Rams aren’t going to be big spenders in free agency. They’ve sunk a lot of money into Donald, Ramsey, Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods and now Matthew Stafford, so they have to pick their spots when it comes to adding talent.

Overall, if the pandemic wouldn't have happened and the cap rose another $10million like it has historically we'd only be like $5 million over which would be easily fixed with one contract restructure. Kind of a bummer but is what it is and all teams have to deal with it. What makes it suck is teams that are historically bad and have lots of cap room will have a plethora of talent to steal this offseason if they choose to. But luckily for us we have two players in AD and Ramsey who we know will be here for the length of their contracts (knock on wood) who we can push money for into later years to fix our problems.

Kind of a bummer but it is what it is ...
When I was a child and would ask my father why something was the way it was, he would try to answer.

If I kept pressing for a better understanding, he would eventually sigh and say “It is what it is”.

That’s when I would walk away wondering what the hell THAT meant.

As I matured (in my mid-50s) I realized what that term means. Sometimes things just suck and there’s nothing we can do about it.

March 17th start of the league year.
I believe it’s the start of the League Year, which I think is a week from today.
Yeah, I really brain farted on that one

The two team most upside down with the cap are the Rams at $35 M over the cap and the Saints at $58 M over the cap.
I think the Rams are just two restructures away from being close to even. With all of the cheap talent about to hit free agency, they're definitely going to want some additional cap room though.

Who did the #1's turn out to be? Plus more cap room.

Who have the Bears failed to keep or sign due to less cap room?

The Bears got Mack and a 2020 second rounder that they turned into TE Cole Kmet. They got a conditional 5th too

The Raiders got 2019 first and they chose Josh Jacobs RB Alabama. They got a sixth too that they traded. Then they used the 2020 first on Damon Arnette CB from Ohio State, and a third that they traded.

So they got a Jacobs and Annette for Mack essentially and all of that cap space was used on a bunch of players that didn't work out. I'd rather have had Mack all that time.

And now its rumored they may use Mack to land Russell Wilson.

I think the Bears won that trade.
