The Chargers are the team I might be worried losing Staley to. They have loads of talent on both sides of the ball with a QB that seems on his way and some elite defensive talent in Bosa and if Derwin James recovers and is healthy. Just need that coach to get them over that hump.

Yeah they have some talent on defense. Fuckin Spanos that broke ass liver-spotted piece of filth.

Looks like Stearley is being requested to interview for the Chargers and the Jets head coach Positions.

Dammit! Only silver lining I could find in losing to Jets and Hags was, “maybe now Staley won’t get interviews.” But then he had to go ahead and lock down the best D in the NFL... dammit...

Now Rams will have to do it the hard way—just advance so far in the playoffs that teams won’t be willing to wait for the interview!

One thought ... trying to be hopeful here ... is that the Chargers and Jets may lean towards an offensive head coach because of their young QBs ... Herbert and Darnold (Fields or Wilson should the Jets move on from Darnold).

Not sure if you referencing Marone or Urban Meyer, as to Meyer, he wins...As to Marone before being hired by the Jaguars, he had a winning record at Buffalo.

Marone is not my cup of tea.
Never liked him in college either.

Urban Meyer will be a lemon in the nfl

Maybe the Jaguars are confused and forgot that in the NFL players get drafted instead of recruited. Aside from recruiting Urban has never been a great X's and O's guy. He's always relied on having good coordinators, who he eventually ended up rubbing the wrong way. I see Meyer as a bit of a phony. I think players would too. Maybe he could coax Tebow out of retirement and bring his heavy QB running offense to the NFL.

This won't be popular but if I'm McVay I would try to hire Doug Marrone right now as an offensive assistant. I am a big fan of offensive minds with a background on the OL. I think Marrone could help us out and McVay could benefit him as well.

Then after the playoffs maybe transition him into a different position if he meshes well with the staff. But for now I'd have him working protections, tells, and run game adjustments. IMO our protections expertise among our staff have not been the same since the Raiders hired Olson away.

I'd like that plan. I wonder how it would sit with Ramsey.

Yeah I've seen rumblings the Falcons might come calling.

After a rough go with a defensive head coach I'm hoping they lean toward an offensive guy.

Yep. Hopefully Staley won't want anything to do with Spanos. Since Dean has screwed around on his end of the stadium costs maybe the NFL can force a trade. If they want Staley badly enough then they need to take Goff and his contract and trade us Herbert.

Weirdly enough in all the articles I've seen, not many mentions of Staley as a prospect HC.

Also I have a feeling Bienemy will not convert. I think they are just hitting home runs with Mahomes but their offense seems to have really big lapses sometimes. Once he doesn't have Mahomes to do magic, who knows what his team will look like. Adam Gase had a record setting season with the Broncos leading to a SB as OC with Peyton Manning at quarterback, I feel Bienemy might be a similar situation. I also think the Chiefs won't make it to the SB.

I agree with you. The team I wouldn’t want to play right now is the Ravens. With the emergence of Dobbins and their overall run game, Andrews being healthy and that defense they are going to be tough to beat.

Bold prediction on the Chiefs.

Gase doesn’t seem to be much of an organizational leader. He feels like a coordinator. The Jets signing him after his Dolphins stint was dumb. I guess they were desperate for an offensive mind.

The part we don’t know about Bienemy is if he can be a head coach. I think he’s a good coordinator. Same with Saleh. He almost acts like he’s more of one of the guys from what I’ve seen. Is he up to running a whole team?
That’s what worries many here most about Staley. He will nail the interviews.

The inevitable story that we don't like see. Rams better make something of this #1 defense before he leaves, like win a SB. There may likely be a significant dropoff next year unless the Rams get really lucky with another up-and-coming.

Rams' defensive coordinator Brandon Staley being pursued for head-coaching jobs

THOUSAND OAKS, CA - AUGUST 18: Los Angeles Rams new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley works with players as the team conducts practice at the Rams training facility in Thousand Oaks on Tuesday August 18, 2020 in preparation for the 2020 National Football League season. The Rams are going into the NFC wild-card playoff game Saturday against the Seattle Seahawks with a defense that finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in fewest yards and fewest points given up. The rest of the NFL took notice — especially teams searching for new head coaches.

The Chargers and New York Jets on Monday requested permission to interview defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, a person with knowledge of the situation said. Interviews with coaches involved in the playoffs cannot be conducted until after their teams' wild-card games. Staley, 38, coached outside linebackers for the Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos before Rams coach Sean McVay hired him last January to replace Wade Phillips.

McVay was not made available to reporters Monday, but he said last month that Staley “checks all the boxes” to be a head coach. “Even though the Rams would get worse,” he said of a possible Staley departure, “that’s what it’s about. And if that’s something that he wants to do, and he gets an opportunity to compete for the job, there’s no doubt in my mind he’ll do a great job.”

The Rams (10-6) gave up only 281.9 yards and 18.5 points per game this season en route to clinching a playoff spot with an 18-7 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Staley oversees a defense that includes stars Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey at tackle and cornerback, respectively, but other players have raised their profiles under the direction of their coordinator. Edge rusher Leonard Floyd recorded a career-best 10½ sacks. Cornerback Darious Williams had four interceptions. Cornerback Troy Hill returned two of his three interceptions for touchdowns and also scored on a fumble return.

In November, the Rams forced three turnovers in a 23-16 victory over the Seahawks at SoFi Stadium. A month later, they forced none in a 20-9 loss to the Seahawks at Lumen Field. After the victory Sunday over the Cardinals, Hill said the defense does not feel pressure to create turnovers and score against the Seahawks.

“I feel like pressure is what we apply,” he said. Hill is among Rams players who have raved about Staley since virtual offseason meetings began last spring. Defensive lineman Morgan Fox, who has a career-best six sacks, said Staley brings energy, and preaches the importance of bonding and focus.

“He just brings such an attention to detail and emphasis on doing the little things right that it kind of helps bring the big picture together,” Fox said Monday during a videoconference with reporters. The defense has carried a Rams team that is back in the playoffs after a one-year absence. The offense has been inconsistent throughout the season and has not scored a touchdown in the last two games.

Yet to be determined is who will start at quarterback against the Seahawks. Jared Goff sat out against the Cardinals after undergoing right thumb surgery last Monday, and John Wolford stepped in and led the Rams to victory in his first NFL game. McVay is not expected to announce who will start until evaluating Goff during practices this week. “We have confidence in both of those guys,” Fox said of Goff and Wolford, adding, “Our job is to give them the ball, whoever’s back there, and give them a chance to score and put us in a good position.”

The Rams are looking forward to a third game this season against the NFC West-champion Seahawks, Fox said. “It’s always a tough game with them,” he said. “We see each other so much that one or two plays against them can always swing the game.” Finishing at the top of the league in several defensive categories was a “cool achievement” for the defense, Fox said, but the focus is on the Seahawks and continuing to win. “We’re pumped about it,” he said, “but it’s not done.”

Agree completely. Being a coordinator is all about relating to the players on your squad. A successful head coach is all about managing his coaching staff while being relatable to all players. I imagine the interviews are all about not saying what you've done, but more about what you are going to do and the plan you have for achieving that.
These guys need to be prepared big time, once a guy is labelled as a bad interview, the hill gets that much harder to climb

McVay's got the right feel on this IMO. You let those guys go for the better opportunity and keep hiring more guys who can bring that for you. Some coaches just don't have a feel on assistants but I think McVay is one of the best at that already.

A few years from now Staley might be back as our DC again after a learning experience running another team who knows. Paying it forward is smart and it also helps to attract top minds if they know you're not a fucking asshole like McCarthy or Zimmer who will block you to protect themselves.

McVay is also doing a great service to the league and these coaches that he hires from lower ranks. Otherwise some of them could languish for years before getting a chance.

It’s all part of the circle of nfl coaching life. I never heard of Brandon Staley until he was hired by the Rams. If he goes, we will find another guy who will be successful with Donald, Ramsey and the rest of our defense.
