My idea of a "perfect" beginning to this offseason...

When you go with that traditional method, the GM is the HC's boss. The top HC candidates aren't going to want a boss. They're going to want a partner.

Who would I prefer choosing our next HC? I'm really not too concerned about that. There's no guarantee we land a Polian/Wolf/McKenzie type. Even if we do, McKenzie's first HC hire was a failure (Dennis Allen).

I'd prefer us to get the best HC possible. So I'd prefer us to utilize the method that won't have top candidates refusing to take our job.

And Pete Carroll picked his own GM, John Schneider. That also panned out well. Whereas McKenzie and his first HC, Dennis Allen, did not.

Which tells me that you need both a good HC and a good GM for the organization to be successful.

Here's also one big flaw in the logic here. Who would you prefer to be choosing our next GM? A Belichick/Carroll/Andy Reid type? Or Demoff?

Because while our GM would choose our HC, Demoff would be the one choosing the GM. So you're still not getting rid of Demoff's voice in the process. Due to that, I'd rather Demoff get his choice of any HC and then that HC work with the team on what GM to hire.

I also don't agree with the people who say Demoff isn't qualified to make these sort of calls. Plus, Demoff won't be doing it alone.

I can see how two reasonable people could see this differently, jrry32.

Tons of examples of successes and failures both ways.

But if it's my call, I get the GM first. Then HE hires the HC.

Not sure I'm crazy about any of the "name" candidates that might insist on "final say" authority, anyway. Almost a deal breaker for me, actually.

The tail has been wagging the dog for 5 years here, already. Enough...

Jaguars want to talk to Tom Coughlin

The Jaguars won’t be able to talk to any coaches currently employed by NFL teams until the season comes to an end, but one candidate for the job isn’t bound by those restrictions.

Former Jaguars and Giants coach Tom Coughlin is now working for the league office, but the possibility of a return to Jacksonville has been bandied about at points this year in relation to Bradley’s expected departure. During a press conference on Monday, Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell said that the team is interested in talking to Coughlin.

It’s not known if Coughlin shares that interest, but he has said he’s interested in coaching since parting ways with the Giants in January. Caldwell also said interim head coach Doug Marrone will be a candidate and that he’s received “numerous phone calls” about the job since dispatching Bradley after Sunday’s loss to the Texans.

“I think it’s going to be an attractive job,” Caldwell said, via Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times Union.

Coughlin was the first head coach in Jaguars history and went 68-60 over eight seasons. That run included four playoff berths and a pair of trips to the AFC title game.

Article: Prioritizing Rams' coaching candidates

My first choice is McDaniel. I like that he crashed and burned in his first try as head coach. It is a big lesson learned. He has had a lot of years to grind on it. By all accounts he is a very bright person who was humbled and will learn from his mistakes. I like that his offenses go after the other teams weakness. You never hear "we gotta get our running game going. It's what we do". If passing is what you do best, then passing is what you do. I also remember Belicheat also crashed and burned his first time. Not so much the second time. Lastly I hate the idea of a retread head coach or a college coach. Most of the best college coaches fail in the NFL . Saban, the old ball coach, Kelly, ect.

The coach that's best for Goff vs the best overall HC candidate

Just a curiosity. How unrealistic would be to resign Mike Martz as the new OC? I know it sounds like a silly idea, but is really that more unrealistic than say Gruden or Harbaugh?
Totally unrealistic. And apples to oranges in comparison to Gruden/Harbaugh.
I loved having Martz as a HC and wish we never got rid of him. But he's 65 now, and out of the league for 5 seasons. If anyone had interest in him, he'd still be in the league

Article: We should expect Kyle Shanahan is the next coach of LA Rams

ask yourself why they didn't go hard after a guy like Boldin, who I was convinced could come in here and not only help us on the field but help our young wideouts to see how a real pro carries himself in preparations for gameday.
Only a guess Merl, but I'd think Bolden would prefer to go to a team he thought could reach the playoffs with a pretty decent QB....and wouldn't talk to the Rams. Just a guess....

JJ: Players not allowed to speak with Kroenke

Although I severely dislike Enos Stanley Kroenke, for obvious reasons, I don't see why this matters. Every owner is different, and the quality of an owner should be judged based on whether or not he puts good football people in charge of the day-to-day operations of his team. It's pretty clear that Kroenke is, at the very least, awkward around people, but being an oddball doesn't necessarily make you a bad owner.
What are these "obvious" reasons????

Rams coaching search: Hall of Famer Tony Dungy explains how the Rooney Rule should work

Dungy makes great points. What is best for this franchise may not mean a big name currently coaching. I'm betting, though, they are going to just fixate on bringing in an offensive minded head coach. Honestly, I don't care who the head coach is, as long as, he hires great coaches to build an offense that can score points, and continue building on our defense and special teams.

Bonsignore: From offensive line to receivers, Rams providing little support for rookie QB Jared Goff

Whoever the new guys is, he's got his work cut out for him on the offensive end. He'll need several linemen and several receivers. And get rid of anything that remains of the Fisher/Boras system. I know changing coaches and systems is not good for a young quarterback, but this would be a classic case of addition by subtraction.

CELEBRATE !! REPORT: Josh McDaniels Top Target for LA Rams HC gig

Kyle Orton averaged 3700 yards and 21 TD to 10 picks the two years under McDaniels in Denver. Either the rest of the NFL failed Orton miserably, or McDaniels knows how to maximize a QBs ability.

Kyle Orton also threw for 3100 yards in 12 game with 18 TDs and 10 picks in Buffalo in 2014. Pretty similar if you ask me.

As of today 19 QBs have passed for 3000 yards with 3 games to go which means again about 19 QBs will throw for about 3700 yards. Orton's QB rating was 86 which was about his average. If you want to give him credit for then I can't argue that, I just don't give him much props for that.

i just don't see how he maximized anything. Orton has performed the same everywhere IMO when given the chance

Can't win responding to these guys online. Gurley should of just ignored the comment. Instead he made this guy's day lol. The guy wouldn't make a peep if he was in front of Gurley but then again that's the world we live in today sadly.

All Gurley has to say is, "Counting my millions."

Todd Gurley: Expectations for the 2017 Season?

One thing for sure, they need to run him out of the "I" with Goff under center. too many runs this year while in the shotgun. Reminds me of DeMarco Murray's struggles last year with the Eagles.

Both are downhill runners. They need to get the ball running towards the line of scrimmage, not taking a handoff in the shotgun standing there waiting for the ball to get back to the QB and then waiting for the handoff.
