Awesome post. Just a question, do you have Robinson ahead of Matthews in ability or future potential?
Both. And not a knock on Matthews, I love and would be thrilled with Matthews, who I think is more ready to play LT, if needed, and has the ability to play Center. Robinson would be a better Guard on day one, IMO, with the ability to play LT in the future. He has all the tools.

Here's some Senior Bowl Mewhort stuff:

http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/sto...jh-boyd-aaron-donald-zach-martin-jack-mewhort
Ohio State’s Jack Mewhort had a very solid day as he worked at both tackle spots. He doesn’t win every time, but he’s a plus pivot blocker in the run game; he exchanges his feet as he drives the outside shoulder of his defender, and wins at the point of attack. He may not have the elite upside to be a high pick, but Mewhort looks like someone who can eventually start at tackle.

Jack Mewhort, OT, Ohio State – Had an outstanding day in pass protection. Plays with wide base, was able to anchor when guys like Aaron Donald tried to convert to power. Future starting RT in the NFL in my opinion and a more impressive Senior Bowl than Mike Adams.

The Good
  • Dee Ford (OLB/DE, Auburn): Ford was probably the biggest winner of the entire week. He took advantage of the opportunity with tremendous practices and finished the week off with one of the best defensive performances in the Senior Bowl'srecent memory. He collected the game's MVP award after absolutely dominating Ohio State offensive tackle Jack Mewhort in the first half. He accumulated a batted pass on Stephen Morris and used his speed to get two sacks on Logan Thomas, one of which was Mewhort in the middle of the two men. He also forced a hold on the best offensive lineman at the Senior Bowl, Notre Dame's Zack Martin. He may only be 6-foot-2 and 243 pounds, but I am not sure how you could be an scout and not consider this guy on Day 2, as he will likely be there (more on that later).
The Bad

  • Jack Mewhort (OT, Ohio State): This guy just drew the unlucky draw when he was faced with blocking Ford. He had a massive hold on Ford and still allowed a sack to him. He seemed to struggle all game long, much like the rest of the North line.

Interesting you think Matthews can play center and LT but don't give him the nod slightly.

Upside, my friend. I haven't seen anybody run block like Robinson in all the years that I have evaluated the OL. He makes Chance Warmack look like a little girl. But, again...no knock on Matthews, who I like better than any of the OL prospects last year.

I think it would be tougher playing center in a scheme where they are calling out the line assignments so give some additional consideration to that over playing guard. I love the idea of blowing open holes to run through but don't think Robinson ever be as good as Matthews at the LT position.

I think he would be an outstanding Center, but I would NEVER play him there. I disagree about the EVER part in your statement, or I would have him over Matthews. I will say it one more time. This is a 1a. 1b. thing for me, as I would be thrilled with either guy, so I would defer, and be fine with, whoever Snead, and Bou like the best. If we could trade down and get either, then that would be my choice.

Using your list, hypothetically lets say the Rams dont go for the homerun ball and select a lineman early (1st rd). Who would you draft in the later rounds to play guard and tackle that could be almost as effective?

I wouldn't go lower than one of these guys at Tackle, or maybe two of these guys to fulfill both positions:
4. Antonio Richardson OT, Tennessee 6'6” 336

Measurables: Arm length: 35”; Official 40 yard dash: 5.3; 10 yard dash: 1.80; Bench Press: 36 reps; Broad jump: DNP; 3 cone drill: DNP.

Strengths: Prototypical size, and weight for an OT. Very strong, very powerful. Has decent technique in pass pro. Quick feet for a big man. Good kickslide, and good initial punch. Saw him in a help situation, and still able to come off and pick up a blitzer. Can get to the next level, and is a good drive blocker. Capable of collapsing the defensive line on a down block. Good leverage, understands angles, and shades. Would work in zone or man schemes.

Weaknesses: Not always consistent. Doesn’t always play to potential. Can get sloppy with his hands, and feet, especially as the game wears on. Not nasty, but will finish his man. Can get beat to the inside. Plays with too wide of base sometimes.

Summary: Lots of potential, perfect size and weight. Needs better conditioning, and needs to clean up some technique issues, but has the tools to be special if motivated to do so. There’s good and bad tape on him, but he can be a beast.

5. Joe Bitonio OT/G, Nevada 6’4” 302

Measurables: Arm length: 33 7/8”; Official 40 yard dash: 4.9; 10 yard dash: 1.71; Bench Press: 22 reps; Broad jump: 114.0”; 3 cone drill: 7.37.

Strengths: Plays with an edge, and likes to finish defenders. Absolutely glides in pass pro, and excelled against top 10 – 20 edge rushers, including Anthony Barr who he shut down. Great leverage player, and always goes forward when run blocking. He’s a smart, versatile, adaptive, and strong lower body. A plus athlete, and is said to be able to play every position on the offensive line.

Weaknesses: Can use his hands too much, too wide. Needs to add weight, and might be best utilized as a Guard, because of his tenacious run blocking, and not ideal size for an OT.

Summary: Very skilled, very smart, and a very smooth underrated athlete. I think he would be an asset to any team, and can play any position in a pinch. Could add some weight, and upper body strength. He had a great combine, and he may have played his way to the top of the 2nd round.

6. Zack Martin OT/G/C, Notre Dame 6’4” 308

Measurables: Arm length: 32 7/8”; Official 40 yard dash: DNP; 10 yard dash: DNP; Bench Press: 29 reps; Broad jump: 106.0”; 3 cone drill: 7.65.

Strengths: Experts say that he can play every position on the offensive line. Martin is a very smooth, and technical player. Exceptional experience, he started 52 games at Notre Dame. Great balance, hands, feet, and kickslide. Team captain, he’s a very clean player. Gets to the next level with ease, and can combo block.

Weaknesses: Not ideal size, and arm length to be an OT, but not powerful enough, yet, to be an effective drive blocker in the run game, nor does he have experience as a Guard.

Summary: Rated as a mid first rounder by most, but I think he’s a bit of a tweener. He’s a tackle only, IMO, but he’s not ideally suited to play there. I think he can play tackle at the next level, but he will have to gain good weight and strength.

7. Ja’Waun James OT, Tennessee 6’6” 311

Measurables: Arm length: 35”; Official 40 yard dash: 5.34; 10 yard dash: DNP; Bench Press: 22 reps; Broad jump: 103.0”; 3 cone drill: 7.42.

Strengths: Started all 49 games played. Big, strong player with ideal size, and length for an OT. Very powerful drive blocker against top competition in the SEC. Can combo, cut, and down block effectively. Good initial pop, but sometimes loses separation. Can zone, or man block. Quick feet, and smooth runner.

Weaknesses: Can struggle a little in space, and doesn’t always stick. Can get a little upright in pass pro, and can get a little sloppy at times.

Summary: Prototypical size. Needs to be coached up in a few areas, such as taking better angles in space, and better overall technique and footwork. Looks like a day one starter, and has a chance to be a very good OT on either side. Is said to have outstanding intangibles: smart, and well respected.

Others:
Jack Mewhort

and then, these are the lower Guards that I like:
Brandon Thomas:
Better athlete than expected. Love his versatility. Long arms - 34 3/4. Needs to work on kickslide to be effective tackle. G/T.
Dakota Dozier:
6'4" 314 Almost 34" arms. Had a good East/West week. Smooth. Not quick, but very good hips and flexion. Needs to work on kickslide in pass pro. G/T.
Kadeem Edwards:
Very quick feet and good flexion. 6'4" 313 with 35 1/2" arms. G/T.
Jon Halapio:
6" 3 323 Guard only, but I like his power, and movement skills. G/C.

Hard to give you exact players without availability, or draft position. Hope this suffices.

I wish I had your faith in Long.

The guy has been seriously injured the last 3 years. He hasn't played a major injury free season since 2010.

As Faulk said, teams just don't let LOTs go unless there is something wrong. Well, Miami did let Long go and it was demonstrated why. Another serious injury.

I'd say the odds of Long breaking down are sooner than later. My view is that depending on Long to hold up at LOT this year is flat out irresponsible. And there is no way I would put Bradford, coming off major surgery, behind an OL that expected Long to protect him.

Probably because unlike the draft, he's a proven commodity that's a Top 5 player at his position. People like to waive the injury flag but yet in reality he only missed 1 game... and he's still relatively young for a tackle

He's only missed one year as a Ram. So far. I'm not drinking the kool-aid that he'll be ready for the start of the season or that he'll recover fully anytime this year. Not at his age. I'm just hoping that he'll recover enough this year to be adequate at LT.

Last indications were he was on schedule, and i've heard/read a couple times now that him returning week 1 is not unrealistic..

Does that timetable having him practicing or playing in preseason?

most recent thing i can find on it

http://espn.go.com/blog/st-louis-rams/post/_/id/6154/injured-rams-working-back-to-health

INDIANAPOLIS -- St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead offered some updates on the team's variety of key injured players Friday afternoon at the NFL scouting combine.

According to Fisher and Snead, quarterback Sam Bradford (knee), offensive tackle Jake Long (knee), receiver Tavon Austin (ankle) and center Scott Wells (leg) are all progressing toward a return.

Here's a quick rundown of the status of each from the coach and general manager:

Bradford and Long -- "Sometimes the human makes a difference," Snead said. "Jake's a professional and he's gonna attack this. But I'm not losing sleep over both of those injuries. We've all said that we're not gonna put an inorganic timeline on it. This date or bust. But you've got enough signs to know that these guys should be ready to go in the season. And kind of play it by ear."

Austin and Wells -- "[They're] doing well," Fisher said. "I don’t think there’s any issues now. Scott is running and Tavon, I have seen video of him working out in an indoor facility and he looked pretty good to me."

Austin's injury was the least serious on the list so it's no surprise that he's coming along well. Bradford is well into his rehab and is expected to resume throwing this spring. Wells is also pretty far along and the fact that he's running again should bode well for him.

Long is the one that is going to take some time given that he only recently had surgery to a fairly dramatic injury. The Rams have expressed optimism that Long would be ready for the regular season opener but as Snead mentioned, attempting to put a specific timetable on it right now would be a fool's errand.

Matthews and Bitonio for me. It just gives us flexibility. They can both get time starting out at guard.

It's only what, one more year on Barksdale at RT and then he may not be worth the money other teams are asking? My point with the offensive line is that we have to improve it, and the one big way to make that happen is financially. So next year you could start Matthews at right tackle.

And if we really want to see what Sam can do, I just don't have a problem with potentially upgrading Long with Matthews on his third year, plugging in Bitonio at RT.

After a full year of evaluating what they have, they can consider drafting a guard and center to end the patchwork offensive line.

He was in for 1 play of the first series so he really missed 2 games and parts of others for a few plays at a time.
