It was time. After the NFC Championship Game last year, he had to be on thin ice. He has done nothing this year to bounce back. And then he stupidly fielded that punt inside the one yard line. Might have been the final straw.
That return inside the 1 yard line was certainly the last straw for me. At some point, isn’t that something that gets repeated whenever the STs practice punt returns? Seriously, how many instructions are there when you’re coaching a punt returner?

Smith had been returning punts long enough to know better than that. It showed poor technique to not have a boundary and poor judgment to field that ball.

Next!

If he was worried about the ball being pinned at the 1, he should have put his feet in the end zone and kneeled down.

This is why I coveted Conception in the draft so much. Immediately we'd have had one of the best returners in the NFL AND a very electric offensive weapon. I'm very content with the Simpson pick however, but, would have tried to move heaven and earth to get Conception also.

Funny, as I was reading through these posts I'm thinking, "maybe we should have drafted Concepcion?".

I don't know...I think it's more of a "desire" thing and not just skills with being a return man.

Well, that's quite an argument for playing him then.
smh GIF
The Rams have him this year. Use him correctly now and prepare for other options if/when he gets hurt.

It was for McVay too. McVay alluded to that play when explaining the decision behind waiving Smirh. Said X was a good guy but the judgment and decision making on fielding punts had to be better.
And that statement right there underscores the move to Alex Bachman. Veteran, smart guy, reliable hands. Nothing fancy, just a good drinking beer.

Yeah I really wanted Concepcion

Loved Concepcion as a prospect and especially for this team, but, a future franchise QB is worth several Concepcions IMO. Still would love someone with his skill set on our team though.

So, ok... X is gone. Fine with it, but man does this feel like small ripple in a tsunami to me. There are SO many more issues on ST. It's weird how bad they are.
It's a start and an obvious good move.
I don't feel like sitting around and watching Xavier continue to digress and cost us another game.
They gave him MORE than every opportunity in the book and he continued to digress.
You can't fix special teams all in one fell swoop but that's a good start.
Provided we can find someone who's better. And that shouldn't be a hard task.
We have our kicker.
We have our punter.
Those are good building blocks.
Now let's see if we can learn how to block on returns.
And do a better job of stopping their returns.

How long have you & I been suggesting this now?.... If it was my call Alex Bachman would hav already been callup from PS-16.
I started a post at the end of last season listing players that I thought wouldn't be returning and Xavier Smith was at the top of the list.

Actually, that's 2 in 2 weeks. Each made horrible decisions that really hurt the team. They are gone. It should send a message. I hope there was some discipline levied on Forbes. I know they like to be positive, but you also need to use that big stick.

Based on where he caught the ball, it looked clear to me that it was going into the endzone if X just got out of the way.
Oh I agree but I am just playing devils advocate and stating what might have been going thru his mind at that moment.

Best move I've seen in a long time! Put Connors back there
I personally have never cared for Xavier Smith as a returner.
It's nothing to do with the fumbles last year. It's more about
just not sensing the possibility of a big return.
I don't know who is taking his place , but I hope we get it right for once. where's
Az Hakim and Tony Horne when you need one.

Maybe stick Tutu on returns until he breaks.

Idk man. Not bringing in a return specialist was clearly a mistake.
Agree and Agree.
We don't use many if any starters on ST's., other than lineman. Could that be a big part of the problem.
New ST coach almost yearly. Same results. Starting to rule out ST coaching and looking at Personnel or
lack there of
