LOS looked right around the 21-yard line, maybe just short of it:

And here's a pic about a tenth of a second before punter makes contact:

Rule currently states that both the ball AND the punter's ENTIRE body must be beyond the LOS for it to be considered illegal.

Punter's right shoulder sure doesn't look beyond the 21 to me.

I think the refs applied the rule correctly on this one. The rule itself is kinda weird though.

EDIT NOTE: Even though the refs IMHO "applied the rule correctly", I also think it's a stupid rule that should be changed. A team should have one and only one chance to punt, none of this "double punt" horseshit.

Glad that non-call is just a footnote, Seattle in primetime games will have some lucky ass calls in their favor. That 2012 TD call from the intern refs when the Packers obviously got the INT was egregious enough.

They can start by eliminating a 2nd punt altogether regardless of the LOS. It's 4th fucking down. Failing to advance to the 1st down marker after the (one and only one) punt attempt or (one and only one) pass attempt or run attempt is a turnover on downs...period.

Any other 4th down fuckery needs to be a turnover on downs in addition to a 15 yard penalty.

Exactly, how do you defend against a 2nd punt? Every player on the field thought (knew) it was a blown play. To let them kick it twice is just stupid, and allows for lots of screwy things to happen potentially.

They missed the call. Because the refs weren't paying attention to the spot of the 2nd kick, they gave it to Seattle that the kick was behind the LOS and unlike a pass, you CAN double kick it... but the ball cannot go past the LOS. Because of the block, the ball didn't... until the kicker carried it past the LOS to do the double kick.

So yeah, they messed up, but man... whoda thunk THAT would have happened???

If it had been one of those crazy windy days like in Soldier Field and the punter kicked it and after going forward X yards, the wind blew it back, then the kicker would NOT be allowed to kick it again.

At least, that's the explanation we got.

Expect THAT to be a rule change come next year...
Very weird. Based on the explanation in the game, you would still have every incentive to punt it again even if it crossed the line of scrimmage. You're much better off with a 10 yard penalty and re-kick than turning the ball over on downs.

Yeah, I agree with this.

Even if the refs "applied the current rule right," I still think it's a stupid rule.

Like that stupid fucking Brady double pass from last year-- if the ball gets swatted back in your face, you shouldn't have a chance to throw it a second time.

Should be the same for a punt-- if the punt gets blocked, ya shouldn't have the chance to scoop it up and try to punt it a second time.

A stupid rule and I hope they change it. This is football, not rugby.

Exactly. Sort of opens up a new 4th down playbook of fuckery doesn't it? Punt it to your own guy 20 yards downfield, he runs sideways and throws a backward pass to another guy and he punts it again.

4th down doesn't look so bad anymore with the game on the line does it? Lol

Perreira has to call things all of a sudden too and doesn't get the luxury of consulting 100% of the playbook before he's called on.

He's human and with 20/20 hindsight would have asked the refs to consider illegal man downfield that likely has not been altered. Worst to worst, Seattle kicks from 5 yards deeper.

Not sure the refs fucked up.

Rulebook apparently allows a second punt from behind the LOS if the first was blocked.

LOS was the 21. Second punt occurred almost exactly on the 21 yard line. Was extremely close as to whether 2nd punt was behind LOS or not.
So…. According to Joe Fuck, the rule changed this year. In my 51 years of watching the NFL I’ve NEVER seen a double punt. What are the frikken odds it would happen first year of a rule change? Damn….. maybe I need to run out and get a lottery ticket

Okay, fair enough, but I wonder how that affects "illegal man downfield". Is that obviated by the block? I dunno.

but yeah, you can bank on that being addressed by the rules committee in the off season for sure.

You don't get to rekick a field goal if that is blocked. If you want to run for a first down and get it, sure. But no rekicks.

I love rules that don’t make any sense. What idiots. They went out of their way to make a rule that allows something completely illegal.

Even if he kicked behind the LOS (which he didnt), nobody argues that most if not all his body was past the LOS. And the ball definitely was.

So when a kicked ball is touched by the kicking team it is downed there, even goes back to that spot. It happens every game. So shouldn’t the ball be dead right when the ball crossed the LOS?

They literally wrote a rule that conflicts with a rule we see applied on almost 1/2 of all punts.

What about pretending the kick is blocked, and then fake fumbling it to your own guy, who then runs for the first down?

You can't advance a fumble, but you can somehow rekick after a fumble?
