I still think Davis is a better runner than all of these guys...if he's stronger...and has a will to do EVERYTHING....he should make it.
So if he can hold onto the ball, if he’s stronger than last year and if he does everything he could be good. You just described every RB we have that doesn’t wear #30.

As well as every other back up RB in and out of the league.

I think Davis’ ball handling ability really hurt him in the coach’s eyes. You can't give up the ball like that when you are a one down back.
It sure didn't help, but I think more than anything, he sucked at pass protection.

Maybe. But I think you can teach blocking techniques easier than you can change how a RB runs with the ball. Think of all the RBs that couldn't even be taught to efficiently switch hands when a defender neared - SJ being one of them. I'm really not sure any of us got the chance to really study his blocking technique as he was benched for fumble-itis.

I think a lot of people got enamored and scared off by that first pre-season game against the cowgirls. Davis showed signs of being able to run and catch but couldn't hold onto the ball. After that game, the coaches didn't really give him many reps until the 4th pre-season game. After that, he played for a total of 6 snaps all season. And at least one of those games Brown was out so...

It doesn't add up to really seeing how he is or can be in pass pro. There's also not much info out there either way in what the coaches have observed outside of this quote I found from Rotoworld. "I've been very pleased with him so far," running-backs coach Skip Peete said. "He's done a good job in both the running game and pass-protection game, and he's surprised me as a receiver coming out of the backfield."

He's a Pac12 USC guy so I hope he does well. I just don't want to see him on the field in a meaningful game if he hasn't fixed his ball handling skills. A third down back does a lot more than pass protect in this offense.

should I add his strengths that the other backs...no matter how much stronger they get...can't match? Davis appears to be a superior runner to every Ram not named Gurley.

Personally, I don't have a problem with a young back that fumbles....a lot of great backs fumble. I'd like to see if he fumbles in real games...consistently. Then I'd worry.

Reams....lol
Brown has proven he is an NFL player & can handle the back up duties when called upon.He is a core special teams guy & a total aprovement over a player like Chase Reynolds!!

Kelly should be the back up , but M. Brown is worthy of being accountable
.
I thought you meant Kelly had proven to be a good backup....my bad.
I'll bet he doesn't make the roster, he isn't going to get out that dog house I bet.
Damn....the doghouse can last an off season too?

Yes he was....went to school with my older sister....and boy did he show out in the Super Bowl....

Fumbles are much like dropped passes...they happen...you don't cut guys for that...you coach them up...bench them...but if they can play..you let them work their way through it Loyal....Billy Waddy was my guy too.

Wendell Tyler was the most frustrating Ram in history for me, Champ. Every time I saw him run with the football, swinging wide, my gut would clench waiting for the fumble. I was singing hallelujahs when he went to the Niners, just so I could quit with the antacids when I was still a teenager......

Maybe you're right, but having to teach a RB how to block and hold onto the ball may be a little too much to teach; especially when, at least to me, that shows he didn't really try to master his desired craft.

My way too early guess.
Holley is cut.
Davis is cut due to fumbleitus and missed blocking assignments, but is added to practice squad.
Rose and Kelly makes roster but one or the other is inactive on game day.
Brown is main backup.
And SURPRISE, Gurley is the starter! This one I'm pretty sure I got right.

And his fumbling makes two very important things that he can’t do. He can’t pass protect, if he gets Goff killed he’s useless no matter what he might do with the rock.

Wait.... whut? You want to see if a RB fumbles in “real games..... consistently”? Sorry but if he goes into the pre-season or even OTAs and is putting the ball on the turf, the LAST thing I want to see is if he’ll do it when we really need him to perform.

You can run for 100 yards. Put it on the ground a couple times and you just screwed the team. RBs have to do both gain yards and not fumble. You live with the occasional fumble but you can’t have a back that shows that tendency.

McVay had some issues @ RB last season & things did not go as planned ......

First the addition & inflated cap salary of Lance Dunbar was stamped marked "Total Failure". Got to be the most unhealthy Ram RB in a long time....he was sent packing & tripping over his bottom lip too with some less kind words of my Ram team....bye!

Then our main back up to Gurley missed five games due to injury. Brown was out wk #3 with a hammy then wks 10/11/12 & 13 with a MCL issue thus leaving McVay stuck into over using Gurley & using WR Tavon Austin (now departed) to carry the running load. One would think that during the off season planning the HC put in place a plan not to be in that position again (Short of healthy load carrying RB's). Thus we see this infusion of young fresh healthy rookie RB's.
I still think Davis is a better runner than all of these guys...if he's stronger...and has a will to do EVERYTHING....he should make it.
I am not sure what we have with Holley/Kelly & Rose III but I am sure got :yay::banana:watching Justin Davis run during pre season. I know that I will have my eyes tuned to #33 this pre season too! I agree that from what I saw JD is something special :wow:as a rookie (y) runner! But that's not all there is to being a NFL RB is it?

Lets hope that our Ram coaches have let the priority of the RB/TE/FB main focus is the protection of our franchised QB. I bet they ran the 1999 pre season video of the pre season game where Trent Green is injured by a missed block by the great Marshall Faulk along with the comment s made by Faulk on how bad & how it affected him. McVay is not going to play a RB for any length of time if he can not make the last line of protection for Goff.

I think that why we did not see much of our 2017 top draft selection in this offense;). I sure hopes that our highly talented TE/HB or Move TE Gerald Everett got that clue last year along with Justin Davis if not kiss Justin Davis good bye along with all his burrs. Rams have 3 new RB's bedsides Davis to replace the type of runners that Lance Dunbar & Tavon Austin were.

Larry Rose III does have the type of speed to replace TA he has been timed as low as 4.39. WE have discussed John Kelly already & he has the talent to give Gurley some serious periods of time on the sideline to keep him fresh when needed. Nick Holley is a ex QB who most think will be a WR in the mold of the Pats star Julian Edelman who is 5-10 200 the same size as Nick Holley. Rams want Holley to play RB...Holley is a proven runner too. Holley lost his 2017 season due to a knee injury & that bears watching.

Sounds like a sportsbook bet....You wanna lay something on the 53...or would PS be enough???

I think it is a little early. The cut of the RB this week just proves the roster is improving.

Tillery ?
