I completely forgot Polite was on the team. At least for now that is.

The way I look at this pick is he will platoon this year and then next yr after LF's contract is up, he will be the guy there. Like LF, he is more of an all round 3-4 OLB. But he has way better pass rush skills. He will eventually be counted on to be on the field for 3 downs. He can rush. He can stack. He can drop. He can scrape. Get him some experience being platooned this year while giving him NFL strength, diet and he''l be a beast in yr 2. The other side is going to be platooned as well. But those guys will be "specialists". Ogbo, Ekubam, Polite, etc. They will be used D&D for their strengths.

Like my earlier post on the Offense.... the Defense is also going to be able to be pretty multiple and unpredictable to specific opponents and their strengths. WP's D was all about get to the QB. It gave up the run to get to the QB. Staley will be more like his mentor Vic Fangio. He will scheme and use use guys all over the place. He has tools to do that. Guys can line up all over the place and make it harder to attack. That's if .... Staley is truly ready. That is one thing we...or anyone else won't know until we can see it on the field. But their personnel choices this offseason are showing that he isn't wanting to be just "this" or "that". He wants to be able to defend whoever, whatever. TL's skill set suggests he can handle that. Gonna be fun if it all comes together.

The guy is legit a true OLB. He can cover and he can rush the passer. I only hope we can keep both Floyd and Lewis along with Ebukam. With Brockers on the team for the next 2 years, they can ease him in unless they lose Floyd.

DE Brockers, Lewis
NT Robinson, Gaines
DT AD, Brockers
Edge Floyd, Lewis

MIKE Kiser, Reeder
MO Young, Howard
SAM Ebukam, Okoronkwo

IMO Okoronkwo needs to grow in his versatility to stay on the team. He's undersized in height and not explosive enough to play DE. He needs to develop into a legit SAM the way Ebukam did to stay on this roster. The drafting of Lewis and the signing of Brockers say a lot about his status with the coaches. He's a bubble player and needs to prove he's versatile to make the team. But his physical metrics and lack of speed work against him. It wouldn't surprise me if he's released.

It will be interesting to see if Reeder isn't moved outside behind Ebukam and Johnston takes his place behind Kiser. Reeder has the size and speed to play SAM. He needs to learn the position and develop coverage ability (technique). Johnston projects as a two-down ILB. Like Littleton, his lack of speed makes him a liability in coverage being limited to zone only. In a true hybrid system, the MIKE normally gets pulled to bring in the nickel so being a 2 down ILB isn't a huge liability.

I didn't include Polite in my evaluation because this guy has too many red flags on him. I'm surprised he's still on the team. What guy shows up at the combine overweight and completely out of shape? That told me all I need to know about his lack of commitment and add to that his foolishness at interviews and until he proves he's grown up I discount him. He dropped his weight back down but can he keep it down? My experience with guys like him says no.

There was a pundit who recently said that the Rams LOVE Polite and that he was dealing with some issues last season, including not sleeping. My therapist background makes me think adjustment disorder, major depressive disorder, or maybe bipolar disorder (not actually diagnosing him! Just naming possibilities). If he were dealing with a new mental disorders brought on by stress it would make sense of how weird he was last season.

I see a pattern here. no graybeards or overpriced FAs.
This is a very good practice for an NFL team IMO. Utilize the draft for defensive OLB/ ILB/ DB's prospects & save all the teams "overpriced & graybeards" for most of the OL & interior DL positions.

That's the way I see it in today's NFL. Sorry to say Snead/McVay are been trending the opposite in the OL. In truth this entire team is very young though. Rams have only 2 players that have over a decade of NFL service. McQuade & Withworth.

If we take the top 10 OL'ers ..... Snead has one very old bald serious graybeard throw him out & the rest of the 9 OL'ers average out @ 3 seasons worth of experience in the NFL. Not what you should be going into the season with in your OL unit. But by this time next season that experience factor will increase to an average of close to over 4 yr average.

Hopefully the Ram Org will have learned from the Gurley/Cooks contracts. Cooks is listed as causing the Rams close to $22 million in dead cap this year. The Rams top 5 paid positions this season are QB-DT-CB-TE-WR, no OL'ers.

Eats up ground when he comes free on the pass rush. He can contribute right away in pass-rush situations. He could be a monster if he stays healthy. Time will tell.

what a freaking wingspan

Blah Blah Blah on the O””Line . The Rams are more experienced & have more depth than they have had in a long time. —Go back & tell me when they had more depth ?? Will talk after the season if there is one.
I think these young guys will get coached up. —Remember you talking all high about Brewer & him being a LT.

as far as this group. I’m excited & upbeat. We don’t get the look of how these guys improve. The Rams by getting younger will be better in the future.

Apologizing for not reading the majority of this thread but do you think they picked our safeties based on their run-stopping ability?

Any opinions would be appreciated. : )

I was not discussing Ol depth. My point was on the subject of utilization of salary cap funds & my preference was to favor the investment of those funds in the OL & not as much in other units IF possible. Then I gave examples of the top five salary cap investments none being OL'ers.

I have voiced my positive thoughts on our 2020 OL depth now for a very long time. I also believe Rams youthful starters Edwards/Corbett/ Evans/Brewer will be very good building materials, so we are in the same camp on many OL elements here.

Fact is Rams did start 2 OL'er's last season who had zero starts. By the half season mark Rams started 2 additional OL'ers who had zero starts & another with only 1 start. These five inexperience starters were a very large issue for the 2019 offense. IMO the 2019 outcome would have been much more positive if the OL elements involved in the 2019 mixture would have had a more seasoned flavor to than youth.

I will go deep into this Soul Surfer when I have the time. But my first thought here are the Rams selected & signed a ton of safeties with Nickle, CB, deep safety type talents all who do tackle well.

well I know you don’t like the Whitworth signing& cap going to him.
Trent Williams was available for some who would have liked that.
Drafting a rookie Center would have put The Rams another season behind on experience.
Blythe is only signed for 1 year. Big Havenstien will see how that plays out. I think Kromer has the right idea.
I likeThe Rams building the O”Line like they are. It has been awhile since The Rams have built a solid line within.
Gurley & Cooks ?? The Rams got a 2nd rd back & signed a nice rookie who is a similar style player as Kupp & maybe even Woods.
Kupp & Reynolds are on there last year of there rookie deal

— Yes Henderson & Akers are young & on low cap rookie deals. So Gurley is a basic wash if they produce like McSnead think they might.

— Yes Demoff is like his dad. A player agent it seems with all his fancy contracts. Akers will probably get a bunch of 007’s ?? Not sure about players numbers. Point being bad deals.

It's just one guy's opinion, but he did play several years at DE in the NFL so he's not just another blathering internet talking head.

As a footnote, it appears to me that all three of our top picks had a significant undercurrent of support from capable evaluators who thought they were much better than the conventional wisdom had them rated.

Seems like they have a diagnosis for everything nowadays. Won't be long and being an "Asshole" will come with a drug treatment plan where in the past a good fucking ass kicking would take care of it.

Btw I am of course pulling for Polite. Dude can rush the passer. But gotta say until he can show he's grown up he's not a name I consider to be any sort of answer.

Speaking as someone who has autism, bipolar depression, and symptoms of schizophrenia, I have to disagree. Without medication for myself, I'd be in a much worse place, if not dead. We don't know if Polite is the same way, but I'd rather not dismiss it - or him - outright. He could've been a first round pick if not for the off the field stuff, and he basically said that the only team he wanted to play for was the Rams because McVay understood him.

I would not be surprised if Polite made the roster this year. You're right that he'll have to want it, that much is true.

Holland will likely be on the practice squad, but I like him as well.

Anyway, I see us keeping ten linebackers on this team. Here's my group:

OLB - Leonard Floyd, Samson Ebukam, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Terrell Lewis, Jachai Polite.
ILB - Travin Howard, Micah Kiser, Natrez Patrick, Kenny Young, Christian Rozeboom.

I don't think Reeder makes this squad. I also think that Johnston will be put on PUP, then IR. Rozeboom is my sleeper pick; he led South Dakota State in tackles every year he started, and he's quite athletic as well. Granted, I don't have the best track record with undrafted inside linebackers (Tegray Scales being on of my picks), but I think that Rozeboom has a big chance to make the roster.

That take surprises me a bit. For the type of skills he has I would think making a Staley roster would be far easier than making it under Phillips where there is more demand on running with guys vs dropping.

I'm not high on Reeder or anything btw. But he does have some nice fit to him for this year I think.
