Methinks either Trey Lance or Zach Wilson could be the next Sam Darnold like reclamation project / success story if given the opportunity.

Lance is still just 25 years old as he only really started one year in college.

2021 – High draft selection thrust into starting lineup as a rookie after 3-4 games during Garoppolo injury and started a couple games. He couldn’t have been ready.

2022 - He suffers a season ending injury early in the 2nd game. Purdy stepped in his 49ers career was basically over.

2023 – Traded to Dallas

2024 – 5th year option denied

2025 - Now backing up Justin Herbert with the Chargers.
I’d like to see them acquire a guy like those two this offseason.. or Anthony Richardson.

One thing I look forward to is seeing McVay with a QB who can run.
Not in any rush to move on from Stafford tho.
Not me, I want no part of any "running" QB.
In the end, they take from the team more than they give.
Its the ultimate team sport and becomes about them.
Offensive players need their catches, runs and TDs for a all around happy unit.

Yeah.. Mahomes sucks.

Shuffle along.

BTW, just thinking about where Jimmy G will be next year. I would bet if Stafford's back, Jimmy could end up in Minnesota to push and compete with McCarthy. It was mentioned today by Orvlosky (sp?) that McCarthy needs competition in Minnesota. Jimmy would be perfect. Good team in place, similar system, weapons, he could step in and be the guy unless JJ really picks it up.

Might get us a decent comp pick?

I'm skeptical anyone will win anything with Sam. Wouldn't we want better than a Sam-like reclamation project?

Shrug.
I don't know.. just talking about guys to take a flyer on.. not someone to count on.
Will Levis might fit here as well.
Are we thinking go with the flyer instead of resign Jimmy G? Or the flyer over Stetson Bennett?

Highest possible would be a 5th, as I understand it.

I want us to load up with the best LT in the draft and maybe a lockdown corner. Make our MVP safer cause he's not going anywhere.
One thing about Stafford is every time he gets new toys we feel it. So I am thinking one of those stud wideouts is most likely. It's a stacked group up top.

He'll sign a cheap 1 year, maybe 2 year deal somewhere, most likely with the Rams
If he left it would be part of the comp pick equation, likely equaled out by a cheap signing the Rams might make

Only way he comes back to the Rams IMO is if Stafford Retires, he is not getting any younger and I expect him to sign with the Browns or the Dolphins or where Chris Shula lands as Head Coach.

I think he's resigned himself to his place in the game, that as a backup. Ive thought Miami was a perfect spot for him already with McD there, certainly cant argue with your logic if that's where Shula ends up however.
Either way, he wont be signing any big $$ deal that would move the needle on comp pick formula

Not sure Shula gets a gig next offseason given the preference for offensive coaches. It also doesn't help that McVay's prior DCs Staley and Morris didn't and aren't doing too well.

On another subject, if he keeps playing I wonder how much Stafford is going to command after his MVP season?

Rams winning the Super Bowl will increase Shula’s demand. Many defenses are a mess and although I expect some OC’s getting jobs the success of MacDonald in Seattle showcases it still can be done.

Good point on Stafford especially if he wins MVP & the Super Bowl.

I totally agree.
That said, Wilson and Lance arent even in the class of Darnold. Both guys were severely over drafted because of the covid restrictions. Darnold was was a legit 1st round pick, and was actually half decent in his first 2 seasons and then broke out with Minnesota.

Yeah Darnold's a great example for college head coaches to point to in the conversation with their QBs on when to declare. He would have been better served staying and getting more seasoning. Will always hate Petey for bailing out at USC like he did, but he was right when he called Darnold on that one.
