After going through all of Nussmeier's games and cutups I could get my hands on I will say that he is a guy the Rams may target in this draft.
First off he has more than one season of film as a starter, and his 2025 season being an immense disappointment works in the Rams favor as a buy-low option. And when it comes to his performance on the field it could be argued that it was a perfect storm situation that makes it difficult for the QB to perform at his best.
He had to play through injury that affected his throwing motion. He faced a ton of protection breakdowns. He had no run game to speak of. And there was a general dysfunction from the top down with that team this year that undoubtedly affected the product on the field. Certainly Nussmeier's value is low, so this is not excuse making, but rather trying to look objectively at the prospect as a buy-low option at the QB position.
As to tools...
He moves well and has good feel in the pocket. His pressure to sacked rate has always been favorable and he passes the eye test for me in the pocket where he never really looks panicked. His mobility extends to moving the chains, he can get it for you if he's got a seam to run.
He has a nice arm that is strong enough to start in the NFL. Makes a lot of throws in different ways, from low trajectory midrange throws over the middle to being able to hit deep passes with a ball that is arced nicely to allow receivers to run under it. He stretches the field with accuracy.
He sees the field well. Bottom dropped out for him and he got benched this year, however he's got a lot of real nice examples of what it can look like when he's progressing his reads. Also he keeps his eyes downfield with the rush, which to me is something a staff cannot teach a QB.
He is a gambler who will fit the ball in and trust his accuracy and arm sometimes too much. Some staffs may not like that. But I don't think that bothers McVay.
He is probably going to be yet another QB from this class that measures in below ideal range. I don't think he looks small out there, but he's not a guy you say has the size you want. Probably an inch short, and his frame is not as solid as a guy like Mateer for example.
I don't think he's some slam dunk prospect by any means. He has flaws. Simpson for example in direct comparison I think has an edge on him in passing acumen alone, but his advantages end there. I see Nussmeier listed round 2 range, no idea where teams are going to see him of course but again he seems to be a fit for McVay and could cook on the bench, and they may be able to get him after expending those top two picks on a corner and wideout or whatever else they want.
