The Pats game was another game where the QB stat line could easily be used against Goff. 2 TD 1 int and less than 200 yards passing. That looks average.

But anyone who watches the game saw Goff played an excellent game while his supporting cast failed him over and over.

Everett himself had three penalties, if you count the holding called on Higbee that was supposed to be called on Everett.
Reynolds dropped an amazing dime from Goff that is most likely a house call if he catches it. A Tyreek Hill or Amari Copper easily houses that.
Woods dropped multiple passes right in his hands including one that he actually had and was on the ground before the DB pulled it away.
Brown drops a ball that most backs catch and take for 20+
Kupp caught a ball that he got cute on and ran backwards. If he turns up field its an easy first down.
Mcvay went to burn clock mode for the entire 4th quarter.

With a less conservative coach and help from his WR's Goff's final line is 300+ yards and 4 TD 0 turnovers.

Mcvay in his presser today mentioned that some of the running success was a result of what the Patriots were defending in the Rams quick pass game and that this will go unnoticed. Mcvay also mentioned he is not at all worried about the offense only producing 17 points. Mcvay said that he purposely went conservative and points out the offense and Goff have responded well after the 49er game, executing at the most critical times when called on.

Supporting cast made some mistakes, but so did Goff - the INT was a horrible pass - too far behind Woods. He looked different than he did against the Cardinals - just off on a few throws - didn't play bad but I disagree with the 300 yards and 4 TDs take.

I'm not ragging on him - just wasn't his best game.

TD pass was great and he's money on the sneaks, but we just saw how good Goff can play five days ago and Thursday wasn't quite there.

You and I have disagreed in the past but I’m not trying to rekindle that I just genuinely wanna know what’s the motivation behind coming in this thread and correcting people praising our qb? That’s not to say I disagree with some of your takes as I don’t think Goff played particularly well against the pats I think he left at least 6+ plays on the field (from memory) but honestly what is the motivation?

He has five fourth and short conversions this year keeping the ball himself.

I think he had one his whole career before 2020.

Discovering another dimension to his game.

In the post that you quoted, I felt that the supporting cast was thrown under the bus when they played well.

I would ask what the motivation was for that poster to comment that the supporting cast let Goff down.

And, I mean this as a legitimate question, not trying to be snarky or anything - but why just ask me that? I didn't even really criticize a Rams player, while the poster I responded to criticized the entire supporting cast on offense. If I was merely correcting, seems a lot worse for someone to be criticizing the WRs, TEs and RBs when they mostly played a good game.

I don't have any special like or dislike for a player because of their position or status, or at least I try not to. If I think the defense sucks in a game, I'll say that. If Kupp sucks, I'll say that too. And the same for Goff.

I agree with what you said 100% about Goff vs the Patriots.

Overall I don't like how often the coach and/or OL and WRs get blamed for things that I consider to be Goff's issue - such as the INT last night - I've seen a few posters say that wasn't a bad play by Goff and that just blows my mind. Now, every player, including Mahomes, makes bad plays. The only issue I had with last night's game was McVay getting so conservative in the fourth quarter for a few drives. So while I wasn't bothered by Goff throwing the INT, I am bothered by someone saying it was Woods' fault.

So to formally and succinctly answer your question, even though I felt it wasn't Goff's best, if a poster just said "Goff was awesome!", I can totally see your asking me this. Would seem like I was just raining on a parade for no reason. The only reason I did was the critique of the supporting cast which I felt was unjustified.

We all have an opinion so that's fine.

I thought for facing a defense that has one of the best secondarys (2 CB's headed to the pro bowl) and an overall defense that has a mastermind or cheater (however you view it) and just shut out rookie sensation Herbert, who has been lighting it up with my fantasy superstar Keenan Allen, all those things in consideration Goff had his work cut out for him. Also, as stated Goff had several players failing him nearly every other play (penalties and key drops). This not to mention Goff escaping pressure and throwing very difficult passes from his end of the feild into the teeth of the defense multiple times on a dime.

I can see average in terms of stat line but in context of the defense faced, what he was asked to do, and supporting cast mishaps I would give it a B grade.

Its only about progress. The argumentitive motive is if he can continue to do so. We all hope that in a sense that he will progress and not regress. Though some premature negatives are thrown around we just got to sit back and stay tuned. Like I said in other threads concerning Goff as of lately. I like the direction he is going.

Bro, you are not allowed to actually use critical thinking skills in relation to Goff's performance... Not even one iota of common sense is acceptable.

I actually didn't know that the Pat's secondary is that good. It explains a lot of what I saw from Goff yesterday. Goff looks like a QB who is on the very precipice of the game slowing all the way down for him mentally. Man, there are times (kupp pass in endzone on the run) where Goff looks like an all-world QB. Then there are times where he is uncharacteristically inaccurate (woods int.). I've seen him anticipate pressure and get rid of the ball faster than his outlet even looks for it.

Hear me out.

I think that Goffs accuracy issues are actually a two-fold timing issue.

on one hand, he rushes throws sometimes because he senses pressure and has this almost panicky "get rid of the ball right frikken now" response. In this regard, Goff is actually playing the game a tad too quick. In these cases, He needs to slow down one hair of a second, perhaps maneuver the pocket a little or find a direction to safely throw the ball away and avoid a turnover/intentional grounding penalty.

on the other hand we see him scanning his options too intensely sometimes. Not in an indecisive sort of way mind you, I think he gets an almost tunnel vision like effect and ends up sending the pressure a tad too late. In these cases, Goff needs to play a split second faster to avoid the strip. You can take a sack and it be the best play in a situation, you just have to be aware enough to tuck the ball in time.

I think that once Goffs internal clock syncs up with how much the game has slowed down for him, we will see the QB that we all imagined he would become.

THIS. I went back and re-watched the game today. The play was reviewed horribly. Woods had the ball, was on the ground... DOWN... then the DB snatched it as they rolled over. It wasn't a pick.

It was a Lance Burton magic trick. It was physically impossible that play ended up being a pick. NFL rules were in affect. It was a gimme bottomline.

Goffs interception totals are moderate to low in my book when you consider the amount of passes he throws and the nature of the passing offense. We
Run lots of screens and deep ins. Both throws can be feast or famine plays and require perfect timing. If a Wr doesn’t run good route or gets held then a pick can result. We
Have seen in many times. Also the short crossers with Dlineman drifting back are very hard to diagnose.

But regarding Goff getting his timing right as you mentioned, this comes with trust in the Oline. Havenstein, Blythe our TE and RB’s all are
Very inconsistent blockers, getting fidgety behind this line is going to happen at times. But I don’t see many of Goffs recent interceptions related to this. NE - a little under thrown. SF - hit while throwing to Kupp underneath, overthrow to Higbee. Tampa - screen to Hendo maybe due to Goff a second early. Deep in to Woods over the middle looked like Woods was held on the route. No picks vs Arizona or Seattle.

I'm a massive homer, but it was a pick. Woods has to control it through contact with the ground. He hit the ground, ball bounced out of his hands, and happened to land right on the defender's body. Fluke play. But it was a pick.

No in that particular situation it was only a 2 hand touch play. Argument is Woods was down regardless. Shouldn’t have been called.

You have to survive contact with the ground with possession. If Woods were falling to the ground like that without a defender near him, the ball popped out, and hit the ground under that circumstance, it would have been incomplete. That is why it's an INT. He can't be down by contact if he doesn't have possession. He has to complete the catch.

Just going to bump these everytime the Rams win or lose? He had some good plays and some bad plays - not the game I would have chosen to bump this thread for.
Given how bad Goff was being trashed after the SF game, yeah, I absolutely think it’s appropriate to bump this thread.

Plenty of posters here were ready to quit on Goff, saying his contract was a big mistake and wondering how we could trade him.

And yeah, I think Goff played a key role in the huge beat-down against one of our most hated rivals, that we haven’t beaten in almost 20 years.

I especially liked how Goff came through on all three 4th down plays... twice he successfully executed the QB sneak, and the 3rd time he pulled them offsides with a hard count.

I thought Goff had a solid game, he came through in key moments and had very few mistakes. Given how close many were to giving up on him, I frankly think it’s fine to remind the doubters that Goff just keeps on winning.

A man gets out of prison and his wife hands him a cheeseburger...

The man: "you didn't tell them to add mustard!?"

That's what some of these posts sound like tbh. Goff didn't look like Montana. Ok. He did lead us to a big win though. Can't we enjoy the fuckin burger and save the hand wringing for later?

You actually helped me make a point I forgot to include in my post: I mentioned in the GameDay thread that Goff seemed un characteristically inaccurate. I meant to lead with that lol

Anyways. A lot of his throws—even completions—are off target i.e. receiver has to really adjust instead of being hit in stride (a lot of the flat routes to the rbs) or just look like lame duck throws. Recall 2017 or 2018 Goff. Even his inaccurate throws were thrown with command lol.

This brings to mind a question about mechanics, especially once one additionally considers Goffs recent struggles with connecting on the deep ball—something he has been awesome at in the past.

I dont think it is purely a mechanical function, I think it is a result of Goffs mind playing faster than he is physically able to. This leads to him mentally trying to get the throw out faster and that causes the mechanics to get jammed up in between.

He just needs to settle in, and connect on a long ball or two to get that confidence back.

I appreciate your take on trust in his blocking. You are absolutely correct..

I mean, look at how he played against a pats d that is always a schematically challenging proposition. In addition to how good the Pat's secondary is. That right there shows us how far Goffs mental game has come along.

Look at how Cam Newton played in comparison. While our D is definitely an elite unit, it's not like they do much schematically that Cam hasn't seen done before.

By the way, about Cam Newton, I know he plays for the Pats....I know...but I couldn't help but feel a hint of empathy for the guy. Am I the only one that noticed the look on his face? Its the look of a man that realizes that his days as a legit starter in the league are probably very close to over. A man that sees his dream evaporating before him. Idc who you are, that is a bit sad.
