I also have this as a possible scenario, though later in the season... because our new starting LT has been injury-prone, much as I like him. Not wishing for it, would love to see Boom as our solid LT for years to come, but the possibility is out there. If that injury happens I wouldn't be surprised if they have Whit do a Weddle and come out of retirement for the playoffs. I'll file this thought in the back of my mind for now.
I am curious if McVay told him to stay in shape... just in case.

A question I have maybe one of you can help me with it.....Let me set up my question first, please....From all reports, both RT Evans & OC Kolone have been the 2nd team backups to starters since TC began. In preseason both of these same OL'ers have spent about the same amount of snaps with the offense. Kolone getting a few fewer snaps than Evans.....

Since most all of us, fans here in ROD fully recognize that Bobby Evans has played his hand out for close to four seasons as a Ram OL'er. That his 2nd-day draft selection & his contract did not pay any dividends thus far since his rookie season... it is clear to me he is certain waiver material...does that indicate our main backup center Jeremiah Kolone is in the same position as Evans?:bueller:
No idea Boni. But personally I don't think either of those guys are NFL players.

Next year hopefully Bruss makes a big jump but it feels like they need fresh blood for that unit even if it's just another depth piece or two.

Having Shelton start this year at RG is not ideal. I like the guy and think he's a solid center but that will probably be the weak spot on our line that teams attack. Gonna be a ton of A gap movement pre-snap in every game followed by stunt games he's gonna be tested hard right out the gate vs Buffalo. Boom too with Von, I'm sure they line him up over there plenty.

Yep. The run game. Supposedly McVays offense works off the run, and he’s tried to run it even in games that that it wasn’t working.

They had a chance to draft a dominant center and instead drafted a 6th receiver. When will they say, this just isn’t working?
Yeah, 62-29 with a couple of Superbowls and a Lombardi just ain't enough. Clearly it ain't working!

It's time to cut him. I realize it might be difficult especially with the injury to Bruss and I'm sure they feel Evans has experience. However, Evans has not played well against backups and last year before trotting out Evans, when Brian Allen got hurt in Minnesota, they went with Jackson instead.

AJ Arcuri has shown enough IMO, to put on the practice squad and I trust others like Kolone & Brewer over Evans at this juncture. It is time to kiss and say goodbye.
Imo - there will be a bigger shake up than you may think ? There are so many moving parts, but Bruss injury makes decisions easier.

It's the preseason, our backups are playing, and they're learning multiple positions. No reason to overreact.

I’ll drink to that.
You want to play OT in the NFL?
1) you protect against edge rushers.
2) you seal the edge on run plays.
Did Evans ever commit to the Whitworth off season training program in his garage gym? I recall him looking extremely out of shape last year coming out of training camp.

I don't believe Evans was a participant. At least I don't recall seeing him in any of the photos. jmo.

Whit had a nice point about Arcuri late in the game. Played nearly every snap and they weren't calling his name.

Edwards has been the weak link. He consistently gets pushed around because he simply hasn't mastered playing low with leverage. He plays too high like the OT he is. If anyone is out of position it's Edwards. Three years and the guy's technique is still hit or miss. Being an inch or two shorter than average, i.e. Anchrum is better than being an inch or two too tall, i.e. Edwards when you are talking OG. Playing inside is all about playing with leverage and strength. At OT it's strength, play radius and footwork. That's why Noteboom is a natural at OT. He's got quick smooth feet, good length and good hand play.

Arcuri was off and on like Bruss. But he showed promise and is why he will be fine next year if they give him a redshirt year this season to be coached up by Carberry. I think both Arcuri and Bruss will be fine next year.

I feel Shelton will be as good or better than Corbett who had his own occasional breakdowns. Shelton is better on the second level as well compared to Corbett. Noteboom has shown he can make those second-level blocks. The problem is Edwards struggles in the run game.

If McVay and Coen use Carter as their FB/TE they would have that lead blocker they need to truly play a power blocking scheme on their inside runs. Begin hitting them with a power run attack will open up those midrange perimeter passes. It will focus the ILBs and SS inside. The FS will probably shade to Kupp which will give one on one opportunities for Robinson. This is how SF punished the Rams with their inside power run attack with their FB. It forces the D to honor the run making play action very effective.

I forsee a really weak run game this season.
Agree and that's why I think Wolford makes more sense to be the #2. They will need to pass the ball and while Perkins threat to run helps the run game, it won't help it enough to offset his passing inconsistencies.

If they has a great ground game, then you might be able to live with Perkins as the #2.

I'm going by my own observation. McVay loves his zone blocking schemes, both inside and outside. Zone blocking is where the OL is attacking space, i.e. gaps, not specific players. Outside zone the RB's primary target gap outside of the TE. Normally McVay runs it to the left side. That means the LT is blocking the DE across from him with the SWR blocking his CB or SS. The target gap would be between the SWR and the LT. When there is no SWR to the left then the LT will block his DE then if possible move to the second level and take out the OLB or DB on that side. I've seen Noteboom do just that.

Last year McVay began to use more inside zone and power blocking schemes. Inside zone again is about attacking space, i.e. gaps so the blocking can potentially mean blocking on the second level. Allen is pretty good at that. Edwards not so much. McVay also began using a pseudo-power blocking scheme where Allen would double with one of the OGs, to open the gap and then hope that Allen could come off that block to make a block on the MIKE on the second level because they don't have a FB. Too many times that didn't happen because the minute Allen doubled one of the ILB would simply fill the gap before Allen could come off the block. Without a lead blocker, the RB was dead meat. McVay tried to use a WR to open the gap but that rarely worked. So McVay went to more inside zone where the POA is between the tackles (A & B gaps). But poor play by both OGs doomed that. IMO it's why they allowed Corbett to walk and will do likewise with Edwards next year.

The key to both zone schemes are the OGs not allowing penetration. Too many times the failure of the play was because of poor execution by the OGs. Remember even with Whitworth last year they still struggled to run. That is why all those runs were stuffed at the LOS. Shelton may be lighter than Corbett but he moves better and his style of play is being a mauler. Corbett wasn't a mauler which is why he played LG better than RG where you want an OG that is a mauler.

My point in all this is to explain that failure of the run game has more to do with the OGs not the LT. A strong inside run game makes play action more effective.

I know many here @ ROD do not care to read Bret Stuter FANSIDED posts but I found this post current & paints a good picture as to whats ongoing with the Rams OL.

LA Rams Logan Bruss ACL/MCL injury sends OL to drawing board

The news from the LA Rams team about their rookie offensive lineman Logan Bruss was not good. In fact, it was about the worst news that Logan Bruss or Kevin Carberry could get right now. Bruss injured his knee in the Rams’ second preseason game and was reported in-game as out for the remainder of the contest.

Today, the Rams’ follow-up report on Bruss. is the worst scenario that could be imagined from last night’s injury. In the news today, the LA Rams will almost certainly place Bruss on the team’s injured reserve list, essentially redshirting him for the entire 2022 NFL season. But that has a ripple effect, as the LA Rams clearly had a tight fit to get players onto their 53-man roster. So let’s evaluate how this information affects the offensive line going forward.

We know that the LA Rams were considering Bruss in competition for the Rams’ starting right guard position, a role that he had already seemed to lose to veteran Coleman Shelton. However else the Rams intended to work their Rams roster magic this year, one thing was clear. The Rams intended to staff their center/right guard positions with a combination of veterans Brian Allen, Coleman Shelton, and rookie Logan Bruss.

Now? It’s back to the drawing board.

Rams Roster: Logan Bruss redshirted

But let’s pause a moment, as the end to a very challenging and demanding season this early for Logan Bruss has to be completely heartbreaking. While he was the first rookie selected by the LA Rams in the 2022 NFL Draft, he was ultimately the 104th player selected in the draft overall. While he is a very talented young offensive lineman with a bright future ahead of him, expectations of his claiming a starting role for the LA Rams this season are over.

Done. Kaput. Finito.

That will throw the LA Rams roster for the offensive line back to square one. Why? Well, the Rams have been sorting out their offensive line through OTAs and training camp. The starting five offensive linemen: Joseph Noteboom, David Edwards, Brian Allen, Coleman Shelton, and Rob Havenstein, are pretty much set in stone.

But when it comes to the backup offensive linemen? It was a jigsaw puzzle before Bruss’s injury. Now, it’s more like a bunch of jigsaw pieces. Let’s go over what we know. The Rams feel warm and fuzzy over offensive tackles Alaric “A.J.” Jackson and A.J. Arcuri. The team has Bobby Evans and Tremayne Jackson to plug and play in either an offensive tackle or offensive guard role.

But offensive center? That’s a bit dicey. The Rams are working Jeremiah Kolone in the role, with a backup rotation to Jack Snyder. Right now, Bruss’s injury will likely put Kolone into a roster discussion, with Snyder into consideration for the team’s practice squad.

The LA Rams’ depth must be ready to compensate for any injuries to starters, and we have yet to see full-season durability out of either Brian Allen or Joseph Noteboom. Bruss, as an NFL rookie, was hoped to be a player who could address that durability with a plug-and-play role at either offensive guard or tackle this year. Those plans will all be chucked out the window now.

We’ll have more to say on this topic. But suddenly, the third and final preseason game appears to play a huge role in terms of the Rams roster for the offensive line in the 2022 NFL season.

As usual Boni you're right on point. I have the Rams keeping 9 and Bruss was one of the 9 now I believe A.J. Arcuri could be kept as he showcased some ability at LT against the Texans. I would not be shocked here if the Rams claimed somebody off waivers too, but that's always could be the case. Keep in mind, I doubt they use capital here to make a deal because I believe they are keeping that capital for OLB, however, it would be nice to get somebody with a 5th round pick that has the ability to play Guard & Tackle.

I'm hoping and praying that Bobby Evans is out of the mix as I like both Brewer & Arcuri much better. I could see them keeping Brewer because of his ability to play guard too, however, Arcuri is a draft choice and looked good at LT. Overall, it's obvious that Alaric Jackson will be first off the bench followed by Anchrum plus Jeremiah Kolone has proved he can handle the Center position, but I would love to add somebody else, if they are out there because I just don't trust Kolone, but maybe I'm biased because of his past play.
