History against Wade Phillips-led Defenses Not in Colts Favor in Week 1 Matchup
by Matt Danely

At this point we are all aware that the Indianapolis Colts are going to begin their season without the franchise quarterback. We don’t know when Andrew Luck will return, but we know – and have known – that it won’t be this week.

Despite that, the Colts have their hands full taking on a Los Angeles Rams organization that hasn’t had a winning season since 2003. And you thought the past couple years have been unbearable, huh?

Having Scott Tolzien under center, multiple injuries to key players and a ton of new faces will be a major task to undertake. Then, you have to consider facing a defense coached up by none other than Wade Phillips.

While we don’t really know what to expect from second-year quarterback Jared Goff, or first-year head coach Sean McVay, the Colts have a long sample size of playing against Phillips-led defenses.

Even with that familiarity with his two-gap, 3-4 base scheme, the Colts have certainly taken more than a couple on the chin when facing off with Phillips, who is widely regarded as one of the best defensive coordinators in recent NFL history.

Phillips has been known to be unique in how he dials up pressure, to confuse numerous quarterbacks with various disguised coverages and getting the most aggressive and opportunistic performances out of his players.

There’s a chance that the Colts will be forced to close a few pages of the playbook with Tolzien under center, and that offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski will need to put forth a gameplan with concepts that have a high-percentage chance of being executed effectively by this nicked-up offense. New starters along the line and at least one new tight end being heavily added into the mix will limit a lot of what “Chud” can do, theoretically.

The running game may be relied upon to be a very big part of the formula to wear down some of the Rams’ defensive playmakers who can turn this game on its head in just a few plays. Here’s to hoping Marlon Mack shows some of the electricity that he flashed through the preseason, and that Frank Gore and Robert Turbin are especially effective on early downs.

As stated above, there is quite a history with Phillips and it doesn’t necessarily bode well for the Colts. Phillips has been a defensive coordinator for the past 35 years, with 2001 and 2014 being the only two seasons he hasn’t had a job throughout that span. So, in preparation for the Colts’ Week 1 matchup against the Rams, let’s take a look at this history with Phillips and the results that have come from it.

The Colts’ first meeting with Phillips took place in 1989 during his first stint as the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator. To say that the Colts’ offense didn’t excel may be quite the understatement, as they could only manage a field goal throughout the game.

This would become a trend through the early meetings as the Colts were only able to beat Phillips once in the first 10 opportunities (13 points in that victory), and averaged 15.9 points per game. The Colts were able to turn their fortunes around a bit ever since, though, winning 10 of the next 16 meetings and were able to put up over 24.5 points per game in that time span.

As you can imagine, who was playing quarterback had a little bit to do with the Colts’ point totals through this sample size. The Peyton Manning years drastically turned this matchup back towards the Colts, but Manning wasn’t just a good quarterback in the league; he’s literally one of the five best in NFL history to ever sling the ‘skin.

Ever since Manning entered the league, we’ve only seen two games quarterbacked by anyone else, with the 2011 seasons being one of true disgust, and then Luck arrived and things have largely been pretty good ever since.

There will be no Luck on Sunday, though, as we all know. Tolzien will be under center, and history doesn’t look to be in the Colts favor with that being the case.

Among the 27 total meetings with Phillips, the Colts are 11-16 and have averaged 20.4 points per game. Not great. In 10 meetings with Manning at quarterback, the Colts are 5-5, and put up 25.8 point per game. Luck’s six opportunities have yielded a 4-2 record and 24 points per game.

I think you know what’s coming next.

In the 11 other games, without Manning or Luck, the Colts are a dreadful 2-9 and are only putting up 13.6 points on average. On the other hand, the Colts have taken better care of the ball in those 11 games, whereas they’ve only had 12 turnovers (1.1 TO/game). Under Manning, they had 20 in 10 games (2 TO/game), and 8 in Luck’s six meetings (1.3 TO/game).

This presents an interesting situation, right? The offense typically doesn’t score more than one touchdown against Phillips-led defenses without Manning/Luck, but there aren’t as many mistakes either.

This, more or less, is exactly what we already think about Tolzien’s abilities, and apparently what the coaching staff sees in him as well. He doesn’t push the ball down the field and will struggle to put points on the board, but he’s safer and won’t — theoretically — make many mistakes.

It appears that the Colts defense couldn’t be more important this week given what we know now. If the Colts offense can’t put up more than 13 points – even against an offense that struggled last season – they will undoubtedly start the season with an ‘L’ for the fifth time in the past six seasons.
-------------
If the Colts can score 18 or more points
I think we win. The Rams Offense will be abysmal. I keep watching film and just seeing hot garbage on that side of the ball for them. I think gurley will start to look more and more like a bust this year.
-----------
I think we'll need the defense to put us in position to score
Getting turnovers is going to be paramount. If we’re hoping for the offense to drive 75 yards for touchdowns, we’re going to be extremely disappointed. We’ll probably need at least one defensive score to have a shot.
---------
Gurley is an absolute beast
And he will tear our defense up. Size, speed, power; he’s amazing.
---------
Comparing what Wade Phillips did 10 years ago to Colts teams
and what he has done against the current regime is irrelevant. We only need to know how Chud has done against him really. In which case:
They are 3-3.

I would argue though that Chud had to be with the Browns on 2 of those 3 loses. (The other with us).

Fun Fact: Chud and Wade coached together on the Chargers in their 05 and 06 when the Chargers were becoming pretty beastly.
----------
Phillips 3-4 isn't religious about two-gapping
He has always been very flexible with it depending on the players he’s given. It remains to be seen what he does with the Rams, but from what I know about Donald he probably won’t be two-gapping a whole lot.

Edit: Just remembered Donald probably won’t play.
-----------
I honestly can't wait to see our defense on the field.
Any success the Colts have with Luck out needs to start with them, and Gurley will be a good test to see our new front seven at work.

They don’t have to be world beaters. A non-career day for Gurley, and if they keep Goff looking like the backup that he is, they could win.

The Rams are just as capable as the Colts when it comes to beating themselves.

I'm totally with you 110% (thats for you @-X-) - this is a game we can not lose, again for many reasons. We're an unknown entity really under McVay, if we can't start the season well, with a good win, then I really don't know what to say!

If we have a loss like we did last year against the 49ers, my season may be over before it began!

If week 1 ends anything like week 1 last season, it is time to cut the entire roster. Any Rams player that witnessed that game last year and still cant get up for this week 1, doesnt deserve to be in the NFL.

Doyel: Thank God for the easy schedule. And for the Rams.
http://www.indystar.com/story/sport...-tragic-season-possible-colts-fans/639077001/

Longish article, so here be the money quotes (imo):

The Colts enter the 2017 NFL opener against the Los Angeles Rams in terrible shape. Since last season ended, and really since the 2015 AFC title game in Foxborough, one of the few lucky breaks to go the Colts’ way was the 2017 schedule, starting with their opening opponent: the flakiest NFL franchise, a team that drafted quarterback Jared Goff and hired coach Jeff Fisher and alienated defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

The Colts as they are constituted today, what with four of their most important players – quarterback Andrew Luck, safety Clayton Geathers, cornerback Vontae Davis, center Ryan Kelly – injured and unavailable, could beat very few NFL teams. It’s tiny, the list of teams these Colts have even a chance of beating, but the Rams are on it.

Bleacher Report predicts the Colts will be the worst team in the league, 32nd of 32.

Me, I wouldn’t go quite that far. Jacksonville is still in the league. So is Cleveland. San Francisco. The Rams. And if you can believe it, those are four of the Colts’ first seven opponents this season. Better to be lucky than good, especially when good isn’t a realistic option.

Admittedly the Rams deserve a lot of the shit that gets dumped on them...Having said that, a lot of this stuff is way over the top...Hope they pummel the Colts and then get a little time with some of the smart-ass "writers" in a locked back room somewhere...They're kin to another group just like them on the internet, the "keyboard warriors"...

Would be nice, but don't expect it. More of the injuries and youth responsible for Gurley and Goff's good game. The media will make excuses any way they can with standout quotes like:
Even the grass occasionally grows where dogs shit.

As is usually (nay, always) the case, being stuck right in the middle between the Bay area and Seattle leaves me to a stream for my viewing pleasure...I have a couple that are pretty decent most of the time. but it's not unusual to have them go the shit !!! (I can't really go out because we watch our grandson while our daughter works...It'as a bit much for my wife on her own because of some health matters...

I think we all get caught up in the lazy exercise of concluding last years crap teams will be this years crap teams. This is why the Rams are being dismissed.

Because I, too, engage in this practice, (largely because I devote exactly zero time into studying other teams rosters  ) I am tempted to dismiss the Browns and the Jaguars and yes, the Niners.

However, the Niner defense scares the crap out of me and the Browns seem to be building the right way this time.

Having said all of this, the Dolts are crap. We better win tomorrow. Farr be it for me to not go postal if the Rams lose.

Colts vs. Rams: 5 Questions with Turf Show Times
Matt Danely sits down with Joseph McAtee of Turf Show Times to dig in to what we should expect from this Sunday’s matchup
by Matt Danely

With the 2017 regular season merely hours away from kicking off for the Indianapolis Colts, I went to Joseph McAtee of Turf Show Times searching for answers to some questions before Sunday’s matchup.

Matt Danely: Being that Todd Gurley had a disappointing season in 2016, and has yet to notch a receiving touchdown in his young career, is the Rams' offense going to be able to scheme him more touches? Is the offensive line equipped to improve upon his 3.2 yards per carry and get him to 1,000 yards again?

Joseph McAtee: The short answer is yes. The Rams brought in LT Andrew Whitworth, a three-time Pro Bowler. They also upgraded (potentially) at center with C John Sullivan who has familiarity with the offensive line scheme under new Rams Head Coach Sean McVay when both were in Washington.

But honestly the biggest upgrade is simply the subtraction of LT Greg Robinson. GRob's play since being drafted second overall in the 2014 NFL Draft was just abysmal. So I'd argue more important than the upgrade of Whitworth is just moving on from Robinson who the Rams traded to the
Detroit Lions.

The problem is that these fixes are perilously thin.

Whitworth is 35-years old. Sullivan is 30 himself and started just one game over the last two seasons. In between the two is LG Rodger Saffold who has played a full 16-game season just once in the last six years. The right side of RG Jamon Brown and RT Rob Havenstein come into their third years with severe talent questions.

So while there's reason for Rams fans to take heart that things should be better on the line at least early on in the season, a 16-game improvement in major measure is probably unlikely. If anything, Rams fans should be hoping there's sufficient improvement to allow Gurley to work and to keep Goff upright to evaluate his future with the franchise while preparing to draft sufficient talent on the line over the next few years.

MD: Understanding that there is a real possibility that Aaron Donald misses Week 1, can Wade Phillips do enough with what he has with the rest of the Rams' front seven to stop a less-than-impressive running team such as the Colts? Who would be stepping up in his absence?

JM: Yeah, let's be blunt. Aaron Donald's not showing up for Week 1. He has demands the Rams are unwilling to meet. Are the demands unfair? Perhaps. Are the Rams a poorly run franchise suddenly trying to negotiate as if they're not? Certainly. But hey, here we are.

Can new Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips make the front seven work? For sure. There's talent in NT Michael Brockers, OLB Robert Quinn and ILB Alec Ogletree. Free agent addition OLB Connor Barwin has put in good football under Phillips before, and ILB Mark Barron has really performed well since the Rams traded for him from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And they're backed up by a solid secondary to boot, so there's no panic needed that Donald's absence dooms the defense or front seven overall.

There are depth concerns. Quinn has missed half of each of the last two seasons. Barwin is 30-years old. And the Rams have seen much of their defensive talent leave in recent years in CB Janoris Jenkins, S Rodney McLeod, S T.J. McDonald and now CB E.J. Gaines whom the Rams traded to the Bills in the move to acquire WR Sammy Watkins.

The Rams papered over those losses with free agent acquisitions. That could work out this year as long as we don't lose a ton of games to injury and new players gel quickly, but long-term the defense is on much shakier ground personnel-wise than in recent years.

Now if Aaron Donald doesn't get locked up over the next two years? The Rams won't have to answer questions as to why they couldn't keep arguably the best individual player in the NFL. We'll already know the answer.

MD: How will the Rams gameplan to defend T.Y. Hilton, and who will be matching up with him the majority of the time? Will this cornerback travel with Hilton?

JM: Well, it's tough to assume much of anything on either side of the ball. We've got so many new faces with a new coaching staff, so there's not a ton of precedent to go off of. Phillips suggested the Rams would double him every play out of necessity. I'd think that's likely inside corner work from Nickell Robey-Coleman and outside either from Trumaine Johnson and Kayvon Webster.

Like I said though, this is new territory for nearly everyone involed. Robey-Coleman and Webster are first-year Rams. How this goes is anyone's guess.

MD: Jared Goff has had a season to shake off the rookie butterflies, and now has a new coach who did an amazing job in Washington. Can Sean McVay produce any semblance of the system he helped Kirk Cousins master in Washington, minimize his mistakes and create successful situations for him? Or, will Goff be expected to be more aggressive? Does Goff have enough weapons to be successful even if he is mistake free?

JM: Oh man. This is kinda everything, right? I mean, the appropriate answer is, "I sure as hell hope so."

The Rams have really pushed to get Goff weapons to evaluate him immediately. We signed WR Robert Woods. We drafted TE Gerald Everett, WR Cooper Kupp and WR Josh Reynolds in the second, third and fourth rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft. And then we shipped a 2nd-round pick and Gaines to the Buffalo Bills for WR Sammy Watkins and a throwaway pick.

In terms of new, quality targets, they're pretty much inarguably the best they've been in a decade. So while the offensive line might still be a cause for concern, the wide receivers and tight ends shouldn't be.

As for whether he'll be successful and how aggressive the offensive playcalling will be for him? Yeah, this is Game 1. I have 0 clue.

MD: Cooper Kupp was one of the draft darlings of so many, yet simultaneously, so many others questioned his ability to create separation against NFL cornerbacks throughout the process of his routes. How will he be used within the Rams' offense, and will the addition of Sammy Watkins take some pressure off of him and allow him to shine in his rookie season?

JM: The only good preview we got of this was the Rams' second preseason game against the Oakland Raiders in which the offense looked very good in the first half, a showing in which Kupp was integral. If that's any indication, he's going to be a huge component in short-yardage work.

He chipped across the middle as a regular second read for Goff in that first half with five receptions for 47 yards. Well, that excludes one reception: a 23-yard touchdown on broken coverage that left Kupp uncovered.

That's really all we have to go off of as Kupp sat the final two preseason contests. Watkins barely factored in as the trade for him came after the first week of the preseason giving him little time to learn the playbook.

I just have very, very little grasp on how they'll work off of each other in meaningful football. But hey, coming off of the 2016 season, I'll take Watkins-Woods-Kupp any day of the week.

Colts Week One at the L.A. Rams: Bold Predictions
by Chris Blystone

The Colts Defense Will Create More Turnovers Than the Rams Have Touchdowns
The Colts youth and inexperience are going to hurt them this season. They will see three defensive backs: Quincy Wilson, Nate Hairston, and Malik Hooker, get plenty of playing time on Sunday. That much inexperience will catch up with them, but not this week.

Jared Goff is not a top-level quarterback. At this point, it is not even clear if he has what it takes to be a starter long term. He has a lot to prove this season before the Rams will know what they have. What’s more, the Colts whole defensive philosophy is to be opportunistic and take the ball away. There might be no better way to debut them than against a young quarterback who is eager to prove he is the real deal.

Add to that picture the preseason turnover machine John Simon, big man Johnathan Hankins, and a back-to-form Henry Anderson, and you have a chance to get some turnovers and give your offense some extra cracks at putting points on the board while taking away the opportunity for the Rams.

Marlon Mack Will Break Off a Big Play for a Touchdown.
If you didn’t know who Kareem Hunt was before last night, you know his name now. He’s the guy who ran roughshod over what was supposed to be one of the better defenses in the league. He did it to the tune of 250 yards from scrimmage and 2 touchdowns.

That’s the kind of difference an outstanding rookie running back can make. It’s the kind Marlon Mack could have Sunday. With his role likely filling in as a third down back, Mack has the potential to see some looks as an outlet when the Rams are dialing up the blitz.

If he gets the ball in space he has the ability to take it to the house for a long touchdown. He won’t be the featured back like Kareem Hunt was, but expect the national media to take note of Marlon Mack after this game.

Scott Tolzien Won’t Suck
Again, these are bold predictions. However, there is reason to believe this could be the case. First, the nastiest piece of the Rams’ pass rush, Aaron Donald, will be working out on the other side of the country. That will have definitely helped Tolzien sleep better this week.

Second, he knows he doesn’t have to carry the team to win this matchup, but he also has to convince coaches that he deserves to continue starting over Jacoby Brissett. Don’t get me wrong, Brissett is the Colts’ long term option as a backup, but Tolzien will want to put some good play on film to hold off Brissett or get himself a job somewhere else down the road. He will be motivated to look downfield for guys like Hilton who have gone unnoticed this preseason.

The second part of this is going to be tied to the running game. The Colts have the best backfield in recent memory, and you can expect them to use it. While their running game won’t be dominant, expect it to play a big role in getting the play action going and relieving the pressure on Tolzien.

Because of this alongside his desire to show what he can do, we will see him look like the guy we saw in week three of the preseason rather than the version of him that graced us with his presence the rest of the offseason.

The Colts Will Win By Two Scores
This one will be tough. This game has many convinced that it could end with a 6-9 score. I just don’t think that will happen. The Colts have shown us a very vanilla offense so far this season and I think we will see Moncrief, Hilton, and Jack Doyle looking much more like their normal selves.

Their running back committee will pile up close to 150 yards on the back of Mack’s big highlight reel play. It won’t be a blowout, but this game will be in hand by the time the fourth quarter winds down and will finish with a two-score margin as the defense holds Todd Gurley in check and forces the Rams to beat them with Jared Goff, who comes up short.
---------
Hope Chris is right but as a doc afraid he may be delusional!
---------
How about we watch at least 1 f*****g game before everyone gives up like a pack of girls scouts? I take that back. Girl scouts would take it and keep faithful.
----------
5 things
Outside of having more points on the scoreboard there are 5 things the Colts will need to do imo to get a win.
1) Keep Tolzien clean, less than 2 sacks & 5 hurried passes.
2) Less than 2 turnovers on offense & special teams, this includes interceptions & fumbles.
3) Running backs combine must have 150+ rushing yards with a TD, I said Mack would take a screen pass in the second half for a 30+ yard the other day & I’m sticking with that. Thought that would be the only TD in a 13-9 win.
4) Defense will need 2 turnovers & yac must be less than 50 yards. I believe we will turn the ball over at least once & then need two take aways. Can’t let a 3 yard play turn into a 9 yard play because of poor tackling.
5) Give Pagano a diet Coke & nachos while he watches from the stands.
---------
Gotta say I agree
Success on defense, success running the ball. No Aaron Donald. Weak Rams secondary.

The Rams were bad last year and Jared Goff was terrible. The Colts should win this game by a big margin.
----------
I just want a run defense.
So tired of watching guys even worse than Gurley look like Walter Payton.
No team should ever feel comfortable running the ball on 3rd and 8.

For some reason I can't get myself to be super excited about this game. Like, football is back and that's great. But as a Rams fan, we've been burned so many times.

2013: Beat the Cardinals opening day in an epic comeback. Bradford was finally the QB we all thought he could be. Next week, a back and forth game vs Atlanta, lost. The next two weeks we get blown the fuck out by teams we should have been able to compete with.

2014: Bradford goes down(again) and Shawn Hill is the starter. We get eaten alive by the Vikings led by Matt fucking Cassel. Who was believed to be as terrible as Scott Tolzien.

2015: Beating the Seahawks in OT was possibly the greatest game I've ever watched. We just defeated a team who lost the super bowl. Week 2, the Redskins get their revenge on us and make us look like a 6-10 team.

2016: Fuck this year. Forever.

What I'm saying is, I've been so disappointed with how inconsistent this team has been the last few years, it's hard for me to get too excited playing a Luckless Colts team. We should absolutely 100% destroy this team. But it's the Rams. Even if we win big, the Redskins aren't a pushover. So I'm treading carefully with excitement.

Funny thing, but if you look back at our terrible team the past few years, we've actually done very well against some of the best QB's in the league - destroyed P. Manning, Brees, Wilson, etc.
Not sure what that means...but it sticks in my memory.

Anyone else excited?

Chuck and his coaches need to get the 0-2 start monkey off their backs, so a win is all everyone cares about.
default_20smile.gif

---------
If he can game plan a victory with Tolzien under center then color me impressed.
---------
no.

this is the least excited I've been since the 1980s. Ballard has churned the roster, but outside of maybe our first two draft picks, I don't see any above average NFL players on defense.

Offense? without Luck, no offense. And I think it may be a long time before we see Luck. They're not even letting him see the practice field.
---------
I'm definitely excited. I can't wait to see what the defense looks like outta the gate.

I'm sure there will be ugly moments (Melvin getting bullied by Watkins is a likely scenario), but I what to see what Woods, Hankins, and Anderson do against Gurley and whether or not our OLBs can win some 1on1s. I would love to see our D force a couple turnovers. Maybe Hunt blocks a kick. Wilson, Hairston, and Hooker will all be on my radar in the secondary when they play.

Of course, I hope that the offense has some success too, but I'm going to keep my expectations low on that front. If our defense can set us up with good field position (and hopefully a TD), then we can get a W...

I'm not predicting a win, but we aren't playing the Steelers here.. It will be possible... Hard to give the Rams a big homefield advantage in their first game game in LA since their last game in LA.

Win or lose, I'll be happy with a good showing from our young defenders and some flashes from the rookies, though... All expectations are dampened until #12 comes back healthy. Go Colts!!
---------
It's nice football is back, but it's hard to get too excited knowing that the Colts will be fielding a so,what inferior product the first few weeks, what with all the injuries & all..
---------
Heck yeah, let's get this 6-10 team rolling baby. Football is finally back, I don't care if they suck.
----------
Losing record here we come
---------
Even with Tolzien we can beat the Rams
---------
Honest question: If you were a fan of another team and could choose an opponent for your team to play, an easy opponent, how many teams would you choose over the Tolzien led Colts?
---------
Excited as a root canal! What has me so down about the start of 17 Season, Scott M* Tolzein that's why. How does this happen??
---------
Too much pessimism in here for me. Is Scott Tolzien about to carve up a Wade Phillips defense? Probably not. But I'm not about to start saying we have no chance just because of him. Ballard has made some sweeping changes on this team and I'm pretty damn stoked to see what they look like.
