This game, more than any other, is on McVay, and it's on him simply for his utter failure to stick with the run.
First, I'm not buying the "Gurley is finished" BS. He ran very strong today, and when the hole was there, he hit it decisively. The run that set the tone for our lone offensive scoring drive looked like it came right out of 2017 or the first 11 games of 2018. He didn't look finished at all, he looked more like his old self than any time we've seen him this year.
And today, when we needed him most, he was nowhere to be found, all because of the "pitch count" thing. He was running great on that scoring drive and then, we get into the red zone, and her comes Malcom Brown. WTF??? Not continuing to ride Gurley on that drive is inexcusable. Not giving him a single carry in the 4th quarter is inexcusable.
And while I won't excuse the OL today (pass pro still sucks), they at least did enough run blocking to get Gurley going. It's not their fault the man calling plays kept going away from it.
As for Goff, I just don't think you can accurately judge him right now. He does miss some throws, but he makes others that get dropped, and still there are others he never gets a chance to make because the D is on him before he can get set. The only thing he has going for him better this year than in 2016 is that he has better WR's. But right now he does not have an OL that can adequately protect him nor does he have a head coach that will make the necessary adjustments in light of that fact and put him in better position to succeed. With the exception of guys like Russell Wilson, who can run around and just chuck it up there and have it somehow land in a receiver's hands, I don't think there are many QB's at all that would look that much better than Jared in these circumstances. And he's going to continue to look unsettled and out of rhythm until the head coach adjusts to the current reality of the bad pass protection, gets the run game going more, and stops putting Jared into seven step drops on long developing patterns.
2017 and 2018 are over, that reality doesn't exist this year.
Overall, I think the playoffs are a pipe dream for us this year. The bad OL and the coach's failure to adjust have killed us and will continue killing us. I guess on the bright side, we will have a 3rd or 4th place schedule next year to help us get back on track.
I guess SB hangover really is a thing then huh?
Seriously, I do think out head coach has a Super Bowl hangover. He's had one, maybe two games this year that were well called, and the rest have been headscratchers at best, if not downright bad. He needs to get out of his head.
If it makes anyone feel better apparently Saffold is hated by Titans fans and is having a bad year. And he's commenting on twitter about the negativity.
Well, Titans fans should petition their GM to cut Saffold, and we can pick him right back up. I'd take him back in a second.
