We will likely be the first team to ever start 3 first overall draft picks at QB in three successive seasons. Maybe take a runner on Cam Newton next season? #therecordthatwillneverbebroken

My only concern is the talent level around Mayfield in addition to having to learn the playbook. This has the potential to be a real disaster. And he's only got around 4 games to play. Remember how long it took OBJ? Oh well, a 5th round comp pick is better than nothing. And he will not be around next year... someone will be looking for a quarterback. Even as a backup he might get 8 million per year and the Rams will never pay that. JMO.

I know we're all seeing how this benefits us but its also super beneficial to Baker that we claimed him - of all teams. He has a chance to revitalize his career under McVay, joins a well-run organization with star power and I hear LA isn't a bad place for a young athlete to live. He should be excited as hell we claimed him.

Pros

Previous starting Experience

Chance to revitalize career

Chance to start 4 of 5 remaining games

Possible comp pick if he leaves and signs somewhere else

Arguably cheap at $1.3 mil

Cons

Bad starting record

Alleged locker room leadership skills

Talent questionable

Arguably waste of time if he doesn't stay as a backup next year.

McVay thought enough of his talent coming out of college to like him and still holds true today, evidently. I'll trust his evaluation. Baker won't beed to be a leader in the locker room, at least not now. We have Donald, Ramsey, Wagner and Stafford. Plenty of leaders there.

A lot of the issues Mayfield had in Cleveland and his short stint in Carolina he won't have here. He's not expected to help us get to the playoffs this year, we're not looking to him to be THE guy as we have Stafford, he has a highly respected coach in McVay and we literally JUST won a Superbowl so even if we fail to make it there in the next decade it's whatever. Far cry from anything he had going on in Cleveland and Carolina.

Just when I thought this year couldnt get worse.

You can't want Wolford or Perkins back under center? They've proven that they aren't NFL quarterbacks (although, to be fair to Perkins, he could be an NFL caliber running back); Mayfield is a former number one overall pick who actually has talent, a guy whom McVay really liked during the draft process. Even if he doesn't work out, we can still get a compensatory pick from him.

There's literally no downside.

We've been playing Wolford and Perkins. We already hit bottom.
Yeah I know but if you were told at the beginning of the season that the rams would be starting baker in december, how fast would your head explode?

I'd rather see Perkins the rest of the way. We know baker isn't a starter in this league let alone for the rams so why are we doing this.

No playoff possibility but potential team disruption for what? He's not starting next year, he wont be a backup here next year so what possible reason could the rams want to bring in someone to play maybe 4 games who doesn't know the playbook and takes experience from Perkins, who does know the platbook, while we still don't know what we have in him. Baker is at 57% completion this year.

And if he does well enough, you get a compensatory pick for him, and you also have insurance as a bridge quarterback in case Stafford retires after this year (a very real possibility we can't ignore).

There's no real downside, and I disagree that Mayfield isn't a starter in the league; he clearly has talent.

We know Baker isn't a starter? Dude put up 26 TDs to 8 Ints in 2020 and led the Browns to the playoffs (including a victory in the playoffs). He also had an outstanding rookie season. I don't think it is remotely clear that Baker can't be a starter. And I'd much, much prefer watching him to watching Perkins play like a HB masquerading as a QB.

And I hope Baker is the backup here next year.

Now the next question. Can the Rams conceivably get him on the field thursday?
If it was Sunday I'd say maybe. But he won't get much practice with the short week. I'd focus on the last 4 weeks. Tutu showed some promise with speed and good hands. Mayfield may not be accurate but at least he's got enough arm to throw deep and see if Tutu can track it down. Woeford was woefully short that play where Tutu beat his man badly.
