Where ya gonna take that rangy, 3 down LB that I think we need in your scenario? Somebody much better than Speights, too.
What about finding a corner via FA or later in the draft, and taking that backer at 38?
Jake Golday ? C J Allen?
My main focus on the trade down from R1.13 was getting WR Omar Cooper AND another defensive starter/key contributor. Options on that R2.38 pick could be any number of players. I believe Trotter or Rodriguez could be available with the Rams R2.61 pick.

Love the move. I give the trade an B+ or A-. It's right on that line for me, as even though the value is more or less fair, that's still a lot of assets to give up for a player needing a new contract.

CB is a major position of weakness on this team. We just got one of the best in the game. It is concerning that the stats appear to suggest he does not excel outside, but you cannot be mad at getting at top 5 CB, who is 25 years of age, for a package that essentially is the 20th overall pick, when you are in win now mode, and keep your own 13th overall selection. I also love that he can tackle, which for me, is a must-have in a corner. I cannot stand CBs that are pure ball hawks and complete liabilities if ever needed to defend a run.

I hope the rumors about making him the highest paid CB in the league are untrue. He elite. But not the best CB in the NFL. So he should not be paid like it. Paying someone just because they are the next man due for a contract is a stupid trend that needs to end. It's even stupider for non QBs that don't have the same positional scarcity. His stats on the outside aren't great, and he's 5'11", so we could still use a bigger body back there. And we haven't seen him play a snap in our system. With his smarts, I am not too concerned about that, but still.

Unless he balls out for the rams. He not getting a huge payday. Two average seasons in a row would dictate that. I just hope the rams don't pay the guy before or midway through the season. Keep him hungry

"overpaid"? not so sure, jrry -- he not only fits a "position of need" at CB, but he's the exact type of CB the Rams need to help take the D to the next level. Because our rush is so good, QBs take lots of shorter throws to WRs, TEs & RBs -- and it killed us last year. Enter McDuffie, an All-Pro CB / Star who excels in the slot role. I've been table pounding for a speedy "coverage" ILB in the draft, but McDuffie helps solve that problem. (still think we need one tho lol)
and as other posters already pointed out, the point value we've given up equates to #20 / #21 overall, so not much loss here -- heck, one of last year's 5th rounders was cut & our 4th rounder (J.Hunter) literally didn't play one snap last year.
I think the biggest "overpay" will be the contract renegotiation... gotta make some tough decisions now that this kid is on the team.
Yeah, my assumption is that McDuffie will primarily play outside here. If he's mostly going to play in the slot, it's a worse deal for us imo. McDuffie is a good to very good CB. But I don't see him as elite. I think we gave up too much. I'm glad we filled a need. I'm happy to have McDuffie on the team. But I maintain that we overpaid for him.

We as Ram fans are lucky and need to appreciate having the best GM & Head Coach combination in the entire NFL, anyone that does not think so needs their head examined. What is it we as Ram fans say? If you don't know I posted it earlier today on the Memes thread.

The question is whether the Rams go corner, linebacker or safety with #13. I could see them going wide receiver, but if McSnead could find Kupp in the 3rd round and Puka in the 5th, I suspect that #13 will be traded back for more picks or they will take the best defensive player that upgrades a position in need. My .02 at least

It seems pretty clear to any unbiased observer that Les generally over pays and under-receives in trades. And to be fair to Les, the Falcon trade was a very good one, for sure. But he's always paid a very steep price for player trades -- Ramsey, Stafford, Von, and now McDuffie. I don't know why pointing out this rather obvious fact makes people think I don't like Les as a GM or that I didn't like the players he traded for. It's like they feel personally insulted or something. Weird.
I think more that it is hard to equate when certain individuals say that Les constantly gets fleeced or overpays and under receives in the same breath they say they love him as a GM. I mean... What is it? He gets taken advantage of in his MAIN job, yet he is really good at his job? I suppose it's not possible that he actually knows his job and knows the values and what a deal will take before he picks up the phone? I suppose it's not possible that he knows more about negotiating deals in the NFL than a few fans on a sports forum? And I suppose he only gets these players that have paid big dividends and that we all appreciate by bending over and taking it from GMs most of us and the league would deem inferior?

Sorry man. It's not that I feel personally insulted. It's that I don't get how some will say they really like him as our GM - yet insinuate he is really bad at one of his main functions of his job. It makes no sense. I can see questioning a trade or deal here and there. But saying that he consistently gets out dueled at the negotiating table is kind of silly for any of us to say while sitting behind a keyboard. I mean, this kind of thinking would also say that KD and Stan are fools who don't understand what they are doing in business. It's all kind of insane.

McDuffie has earned an 89.4 PFF coverage grade since entering the league in 2022, which is a top-five mark among all cornerbacks and makes him the only one in the top 10 to have spent more than 25% of their career snaps in the slot."

He's really good at evaluation, and also going and getting McVay and his staff who they want. That's how I see it. And that's not a knock on him.

Overpaying is also not the worst thing a GM can do if the player they trade for performs at a high level. And generally when Snead has done the big trades he's paid some premium prices to get the deals done but they have worked out.

So I think there's room for a GM to have a penchant to overpay at times and still remain a damn good GM. And Snead has overpaid and is still a damn good GM. Acting like these two things are mutually inclusive, that a GM must always get good deals in what he pays for players to be a good GM, is not something I think is accurate.

This trade falls into that range for me. McDuffie has been moreso elite in the slot than he's been outside the hash. Slot corners are more readily available and thus more affordable. But for the Rams he'll probably serve in the Star role, which means yes he'll be in the slot some or outside some but they'll build it around him. So maybe for the Rams once it all translates to the field his addition will be worth it. But that doesn't mean they didn't overpay as per the market.

Where would McDuffie be slotted in this upcoming draft, especially knowing he’s a sure thing?

Then, sitting at #29… how much would it cost to move up and get him?

It feels like we got a fair deal.
And now we have to sign him.
I mean we would pay a first-rounder anyway, but I read that he's going to be looking for something in the area of 30 million a year.

I wouldn't be surprised if they have already worked out some kind of contract extension with McDuffies agent.
It's happened, but not usually on a players rookie contract.
