I see people here have never torn an ACL.

Wanna know what happens? You can't move laterally. At all. It sucks. A lot. Gurley showed he could move laterally.

Fact is, he was very likely healthy, and McVay decided to "be a genius" by doing what Belichick would never expect him to do - basically bench his best offensive player. And he was probably right, Bill never saw it coming...and laughed his ass off when it happened.

If Gurley had some sort of real injury, he'd have been on an operating table within 2 days of the Super Bowl. Know where he was yesterday? On a beach in Marina Del Rey. Wanna know how I know? Cause I saw him. And he wasn't wearing a knee brace.

Exactly! Romo clearly questioned that call...I was HOT about it.

I had a hard time listening to Romo and how eager he was to masturbate Edelman while simultaneously blowing Brady, but one thing I noticed that I thought was quite interesting was how good he was at predicting what the next play was going to be. On the Patriots touchdown, when they ran that one route to Edelman, he went "watch, they're gonna run the exact same play again, cause it just worked so well", and they did, and then he went "watch, they're gonna do the same thing again, because the Rams aren't stopping it" and people in my house were screaming for the Rams to call a timeout...and then that play happened.

On the series we're talking about in your quote, he called that play, he called the pass on the next play and, when it was 3rd and 20, he correctly called how they were going to just give up with a run. He did this a few times over the course of the game. He's a crap announcer in terms of having to listen to his commentary, but he's clearly a student of the game in terms of being able to recognize play patterns.

The Washington Post is one of the most highly respected and accurate papers in the USA.

You may not agree with their stances based opinion pieces, which lean left, which is fine. However that's only part of the paper. Which is true of every paper whether it leans one way or the other, that's reflected in the opinion pieces. The reporting end is considered top notch.
Unfortunately, many news outlets have become untrustworthy.
I dont care which way they lean.

When you and I were kids, everyone got the paper delivered to their door. All the paper had to do was report the news.
Now it seems they've Mostly become "shock jocks" as they try to leap each other for "clicks".

I'll leave it at that.

Again, sorry if I inferred he tore it against the Eagles.

I don’t know that. Just that it is now.

Farr Be It,

The main question which is confusing is whether your source implied it was a COMPLETE tear or a PARTIAL tear. They are two radically different things.

I know of course you do not want to reveal anything about who your source is. But could you try to reveal what the EXACT wording was? It sounds like your interaction with your source was very brief, right?

Quite honestly, it is quite easy to get the two conflated (partial tear vs. complete tear.) I don't usually like to play games with semantics, but in this case here, the EXACT wording is important. For example, the following phrases-- "Gurley tore his ACL" or "Gurley has an ACL tear"-- could mean EITHER a partial tear OR a complete tear.

The key question is, did your source use a clarifying adjective to the word "tear"?

A COMPLETE tear would be shocking. A PARTIAL tear would be entirely understandable. Here's why:

First: for a COMPLETE tear, Gurley would be a statistical outlier-- perhaps 1 in 300? It is extraordinarily rare for a high -tuned athlete to be able to function with a complete tear (John Elway and Hines Ward are two counter-examples... but again, EXTREMELY rare). Second: a complete tear is EASY to diagnose. An MRI would show that either the ACL is there, or it is not. Third: the Rams would be flouting league rules by lying about a player having a major injury. Fourth: the Rams would be unforgivably irresponsible with Gurley's career to have him keep playing with a full ACL tear.

By contrast, a PARTIAL tear would make all kinds of sense. First: tons of athletes play with partial tears, happens all the time. Second: a partial tear is HARD to diagnose. It could be EITHER "minor" or "moderate," and the MRI is not reliable in showing the difference. Third: the Rams would not be in violation of league rules-- if Gurley can prove he can function well enough with a partial tear, it could justify leaving him off the injury report. Fourth: it would not be irresponsible to play him-- it would be a judgment call. Understandable that both Gurley and the Rams would choose to ":gut it out" and then wait until the offseason to decide what to do.

Anyway-- do you recall whether your source used a qualifying adjective to the word tear? Because if he didn't, logic and common sense would suggest it was NOT a complete tear and instead it was a PARTIAL tear.

It just seems to me that if Gurley is indeed healthy, then he might not be in the Rams long term plans. You don’t make someone the highest paid RB in NFL history and then take away half his carries. I mean you do if they are underperforming but Gurley was most definitely not underperforming.

I’m also blown away this isn’t a bigger story. It’s gotten a little national run but man if this happened in Dallas or Philly or New York the press would be absolutely eating the head coach alive right now.

Didn't you say that the Patriots didn't do anything new?

Which they did with essentially their entire defense?

There are a variety of frustrating reasons McVay might not have used Todd even if healthy. Getting too pass happy. Poor feel for the game. Etc. But there is no way he used Gurley so sparingly simply as some sort of surprise tactic that the Patriots wouldn't see coming. There is just no way. If it were true, he should (would?) be fired on the spot for such stupidity, notwithstanding his body of wok to date. And I have a funny feeling McVay will be sticking around.

Yeah that angle is pretty ridiculous. A lazy narrative manufactured just to criticize McVay IMO.

fixed it.

Maybe you guys can set aside some of these questions, and ask some others.

Did you read todays article I posted from the OCR?

  • The players all conducted a standard year-end physical today. (Tuesday)
  • Todd Gurley was strangely absent for the media, and refused to comment on the result of his physical. A clean bill of health gives him a great opportunity to put to bed all these questions. The chosen reaction stoked the fires.
  • You read Coach McVay's comments on Gurley, on whether there were plans for any surgeries, and didn't find his stammering answer alarming? Wow. Read it again. He gave away the fact that there is a problem.
  • Again, I tell you. (sure, you don't know me from Adam) Gurley tore his ACL. Nobody said he did it a weeks ago, or that the Rams knew it a long time ago, and played him with that knowledge.
  • He had a physical today. It is very possible the Rams were shocked to find out today.

  • it sucks. I further am told that he may be done. We all have seen signs of this in the way he has carried himself, of late. I think he is scared that his career may be over. It really, really sucks. I hope I am wrong. But the injury history. He has to have the fight in him. He has to listen to the doctors.
We will find out more soon. I am just sharing what I know with you guys. My source is a friend, and a Rams fan.

Career is over? C'mon, man. That shit isn't believable.

There are only 2 scenarios....Either Todd was hurt and forced to limited reps and the Rams have lied about his injury OR Gurley was healthy and McVay gave C.J. half his reps.

The first scenario is an ethical issue that may land the organization in some hot water. The second scenario is maybe the single worst coaching decision in Super Bowl history besides Pete Carrol not giving Marshawn the ball.

But those are the only 2 options. I’m not trying to pounce on McVay but if what he says is true (Gurley is fine), he deserves ALL the criticism.

I hope he sticks around. The guy is 33 and took us to a Super Bowl in only his 2nd season as HC. We would be stupid to fire him.

Thanks. I’m trying to get the clarification myself. I’m waiting to hear back. Praying for a partial tear, of course.

Reminder to self: “generation” of vipers. (Matt:24:12) though I was shooting for the Brood of vipers context.

I hope not.

Yes, and back then it was harder to discover real truth anyway. There were so few outlets. Now it's a lot easier. But even back then publications were a combination of opinion columns and factual reporting and investigative journalism.

I agree many news outlets are not trustworthy. But most that aren't started out that way and were born on the internet in the last 15 years.

We cannot equate established outlets with recent online outlets with no credibility. That's what's the issue is IMO. People do that.

It isn't a matter of news outlets becoming untrustworthy. What has happened is that many outlets that are untrustworthy have popped up in the last many years. That's been the shift.

NFL teams aren’t allowed to cover up injuries. It messes with the betting lines.

Oh yeah the NFL and Las Vegas are in cahhots.

LOLOLOLOL.

Feasible.

@Poppinfresh you said Fact is, he was very likely healthy, and McVay decided to "be a genius" by doing what Belichick would never expect him to do - basically bench his best offensive player. And he was probably right, Bill never saw it coming...and laughed his ass off when it happened.

That's the stupidest opinion I've ever heard on any football thing ever. Ever.

Really, really ridiculous.

But, as you claim.......it's a fact.

So does no one remember when Sherman blew his Achilles? He said it was barely hanging on but I don’t remember him being on any injury report or the shecocks being fined. I’m guessing we’re over thinking a lot of this. Everyone knew Gurley was not quite right. Let’s not kid ourselves. Was the ACL torn - partially or otherwise? Possibly. Did McVay trot him out there on a fully torn ACL and knew about it? Unlikely.

I’ve heard about many athletes being injured and even having torn ACLs without realizing it. Some even admitting that they suspected it was torn.

It’s probably best if we kinda hold our judgements on the situation - including a member letting us know what he’s heard from what he considers a reliable source. It will all come out in the wash.
