Future Starter of Career Backup? Of course, I am hoping that Nick Foles is as good as I think he is and Mannion won't have to be a starter (At least not for the Rams) for several years!

Mannion has the physical tools and the classroom smarts.

Can he process fast enough and make smart decisions on the field? We don't know yet.

Hopefully, Foles stays healthy and we don't get another look until the offseason.

Hopefully it will be a couple years before we find out.
But on first impression I don't ever see him ever challenging Foles for the starter job.

Good physical skills. He isn't ready yet and may never be. He was pretty bad in his last 2 games.

Definitely looked like a rookie. Mind you, he got mop up duty with the depth chart.

In some regards, it might have been a good thing. No need to rush him along.

He still had Givens in there and while the talent around him was less, the guys he was playing against weren't world beaters either. He threw two poor interceptions and had a bunch of very close calls. His deep ball looked rough as well.

Well, let's see how well you could do.

Too early to tell, but he looked pretty rough against the chefs. No drive on the out routes..... which will lead to many a pick 6 if not worked on. I do like the way he uses his height on the shorter routes to get ball over line/lbs. Lets see how he looks this time next year, because if we see him in action again this year (aside from mop up duty) , something has gone horribly, horribly wrong.

Not super impressed, tbh. All the physical and mental tools, but the consistency and accuracy are lacking.

He definitely looked like a rookie his last 2 starts and looked ok his first two starts.... IMHO I think he is a number 3 all year long.....and I echo the sentiment that this next off and pre season will be when we know what we have then. Although I do think he has all the tools to eventually become a very good starter to a great backup......... ;)

Go Rams........... ;)

He looked like a rookie...Oh, he is a rookie...Manning, Brady, Montana (I could go on) have had poor performances...I wouldn't read too much into that for a while..I have no idea whether he's starter material in the long run yet...Please don't ask if I'm comparing him to those guys...Of course I'm not..

If you're taking a QB in the 3rd or later, you're almost guaranteed to get a backup or worse. I think he'll be a backup which is why I don't like spending picks on QBs after the 2nd. That being said, let's see what he can develop into.

I've watched a lil of the game...the first half...and he's behind a bunch of other young QB's....I'd guess, I don't know, but a hunch is, this Rams offense is NOT user friendly. He was squeezing throws in, throwing medicine balls (the kind that get people HURT!) and generally late. @CGI_Ram said something, besides physical tools, the best indicator of QB success is the ability to process information, QUICKLY...you know, the stuff THEY (you know who they are, right?) say smart guys do so well....the ability to look at a play develop, with chaos and mayhem all around, and find the right person to deliver the ball to...Does Mannion have this? Hell, does Foles? From what I remember in college, when Cook & Wheaton were out there, mostly just Cook, Mannion looked pretty good. Last year, not so good. In fact, with a terrible line he looked terrible....Hoping Cig and Weinke will have him ready....

Personally, I'm really hoping Foles never leaves a game....never....and we draft one of these hot shots in 2016 (Goff, Cook, Jones, Hackenberg)...That's just me...

My main question, why not get the guy all the work? Why waste time with Keenum & Davis at all?

Based of the scouting reports, I expected to see a weak armed, long release QB that couldnt outrun the kitchen counter. But apparently had "QB smarts"
What I saw on the field was a pretty strong armed, quick release QB who looked pretty nimble for a big guy. And then he made some poor decisions....

Overall? Looks like a 3rd round project to me. A year on the pine will do him wonders and I'd expect to see him competing for the #2 job NEXT year

Because he's still incredibly raw, you don't want somebody that raw as your second stringer. Same reason Aaron Rodgers wasn't inherently Brett's second stringer. What if Foles goes down? Are you really more comfortable throwing Mannion out there instead of Keenum?

We'd be worse off and we'd be risking stunting his growth.

I think this is a very good point. Hopefully he'll develop and one day be a potential good starter in this league - otherwise way spend a 3rd round pick on a career third stringer?

I generally subscribe to the same school of thought.

A 3rd round pick at another position can be a starter. At QB... Bigger long shot. Didn't like using that pick on a QB at the time.

IMO..., grab the backup as a FA or draft one in the later rounds if you want to throw a dart at it.

I really thought Mannion had the tools and the smarts.....I was really down on Hundley, but boy has he looked sharp.

I agree with everything you're saying except Rodgers was Favre's backup. Unless Im missing your point. Doug Pederson was Favre's primary backup for years but wasnt brought back when they drafted Rodgers
