I think this is a very good point. Hopefully he'll develop and one day be a potential good starter in this league - otherwise way spend a 3rd round pick on a career third stringer?

I think that was the Rams strategy all along when choosing to invest a premium pick, like a 3rd rounder. My guess is they saw Mannion with all the tools, and someone they were willing to invest years developing.

I agree with everything you're saying except Rodgers was Favre's backup. Unless Im missing your point. Doug Pederson was Favre's primary backup for years but wasnt brought back when they drafted Rodgers
I was mistaken, remembering Craig Nall being on the team longer than he actually was.

It looked to me like the Rams never intended to give Mannion a look as the backup this year. He was QB3 all the way. He just wasn't getting the reps. The #2 fight was between Case and AD the whole time. Mannion was getting stashed in the 3 spot this year no matter what.

As for what he is .... Who knows? He needs reps to (1) show what he can do and (2) get better. Not very many rookies are good - those that are are getting almost of the snaps in practice.

Well, we may have one of the best QB coaches in the business at ironing out fundamental/mental flaws Sean has. Besides, both Keenum and Johnny Hekker is ahead of him on the dept chart so Sean will plenty of time to sort his issues out.

One bad performance? I was disappointed by his performance but I haven't given up hope of course. I'll wait to see what he looks like a few years from now.

I really thought Mannion had the tools and the smarts.....I was really down on Hundley, but boy has he looked sharp.
Yeah, it's really hard to judge the QBs from the spread. You have no idea how their brains are going to process the pro stuff, if at all. I think that's why the Rams took Mannion since he was from a pro style offense.

Not nearly enough, tho I admittedly wasn't a fan in the drafting, for him to override drafting a top notch QB should said QB somehow fall into our laps next year.

But hopefully Foles is the answer for at least a few years.

What if Foles goes down? Are you really more comfortable throwing Mannion out there instead of Keenum?
If Foles goes down, my hopes for success will go down, and yes, I'd rather see what Mannion brings to the table than Keenum. After 2-3 years, these guys ARE who we SEE they are...The best way to speed the learning process is to get them reps, he may have something. Preseason is the time for this to happen.

I really thought Mannion had the tools and the smarts.....I was really down on Hundley, but boy has he looked sharp.
Mannion allegedly DOES have some tools...Need to sharpen them with work...reps...plays...it's vanilla out there, right?:cautious: Hundley single handedly (well, almost) turned around a dead program...Hard worker....I'll never understand how Tim Tebow goes 1st round...Mannion goes 3rd round...Hundley goes...5th? Petty goes..4th? They call these guys experts?o_O

Rodgers was Favre's backup.
That's what I thought...Imagine, Brett never gets hurt, and you stick 2 QB's that will never play behind him? One is a rookie...That's almost like wasting 2 rooster spots.

Hoping for the best with him.

I've watched a lil of the game...the first half...and he's behind a bunch of other young QB's....I'd guess, I don't know, but a hunch is, this Rams offense is NOT user friendly. He was squeezing throws in, throwing medicine balls (the kind that get people HURT!) and generally late. @CGI_Ram said something, besides physical tools, the best indicator of QB success is the ability to process information, QUICKLY...you know, the stuff THEY (you know who they are, right?) say smart guys do so well....the ability to look at a play develop, with chaos and mayhem all around, and find the right person to deliver the ball to...Does Mannion have this? Hell, does Foles? From what I remember in college, when Cook & Wheaton were out there, mostly just Cook, Mannion looked pretty good. Last year, not so good. In fact, with a terrible line he looked terrible....Hoping Cig and Weinke will have him ready....

Personally, I'm really hoping Foles never leaves a game....never....and we draft one of these hot shots in 2016 (Goff, Cook, Jones, Hackenberg)...That's just me...

My main question, why not get the guy all the work? Why waste time with Keenum & Davis at all?

I like Cardale Jones but I love Jared Goff. I hope he gets underrated due to his thin frame and lack of an elite arm. He's going to be really good if he has it mentally. Made a throw pretty much every week that a lot of NFL QBs would struggle to make.

He had some good moments and some bad moments in different games. I wouldn't take anything he did against the Chiefs as some sort of indicator. Just like I wouldn't take Foles' game against the Titans as any sort of indicator.

I feel looked like a rookie quarterback in a system that isn't particularly QB friendly. That being said, I think he has the tools to make the necessary throws and good pocket presence. I believe two years on the bench will do wonders for him. Hundley looked great, but let's not forget he's got the luxury of learning from arguably the best quarterback in the league in one the most quarterback friendly systems.

Unless he gets injured, Brandon Doughty will rise up the draft boards as well. WKU is trying to go more ball control this year so his stats may suffer but this kid has it all

Right now Keenum looks like a pretty valuable backup, like the old backups used to be. The Frank Riech, Jeff Hostetler type who could win the game if your top guy went out. The #2 QB spot used to be about smarts and being able to run the game plan as well as the starter albeit with less physical tools. Now it's used a lot as a developmental spot. In my mind the last two years have shown us that getting your #2 the reps is vastly more important than worrying about your maybe QB of the future two years from now. That's what practice and staying after to learn and throw is for. The fact that I don't worry as much about what Foles does this year anymore actually has less to do with Foles and more to do with Keenum's pre-season.

One thing I did like. He's not afraid to throw into tight coverage.

He has all the physical tools and skill set. Hopefully we groom and tutor him properly to become our future starter. I'm willing to be patient with him. The Aaron Rodgers approach is fine by me.

The slow and patient approach is one reason the Rams were so quick to give Foles an extension, imo. One season working hard in the film room, end of practice and with the scout team. Next season if he's progressed have him as the #2, and then see what the Rams have by the end of that season, and what is up with Foles.
