Could have traded him, played hardball then, like always, succumbed in the end.

He played awful/been injured ever since.

Great move whiners.

.
Never understood why they ended up giving him all that $$ after the way everything went down. He kept naming where he would rather be. They could have just let him walk and drafted someone in addition to pearsol. Besides, I could see the emergence of jennings, making ayuck expendable.

I did not read the article so maybe just my ignorance here but, they signed a player to a bad contract and are able to void that and just walk away with no cap ramifications while we’ve been on the hook for AD two years after his retirement? Dafuq?!

Apples and oranges, AD is the goat and deserves to be paid by a classy organization. Aiyuck never earned his contract and the whiners are a dumpster fire organization.

Two different situations actually. Aiyuk like everyone else including AD will have clauses in their contract that if they do x, y or z they can have guarantees voided. Those are often things getting you arrested or charged with a crime or in the case of Aiyuk refusing to do team activities. AD had these same things I'm sure in his contract he just didn't act like an idiot like Aiyuk is. Now the Rams could have gone after part of his signing bonus and other bonuses that he didn't "earn" because he retired before the contract expired but I don't think the Rams would do that with a player like AD but that's just my 2 cents on that.

@OldSchool made some excellent points.

Still, there are other factors.
The Niners were going to ATTEMPT to avoid paying guaranteed-$, claiming Aiyuk violated certain clauses.
If Aiyuk had successfully fought that, he would have gotten his money but been stuck on a team he did not want to play for, and did not want his lame-ass. Meanwhile, the Niners would have had a big cap hit for a player they no longer wanted. Both sides would have been miserable.

The only parties to have benefited would have been Niners' opponents ... like the Rams!

As it appears to be headed, Aiyuk would be a free agent (he is happy); and the 49ers get rid of a player they do not want, while getting some cap relief. Both sides benefit.

One thing to keep in mind, the Niners will still have salary cap charges for Aiyuk in 2026 (and possibly 2027) ... just not as much as they otherwise would have had.

While Aiyuk and San Francisco may be happy, they both needed to go through an Ugly Process to get there.
For years now, the Rams organization has been able to Avoid these type of situations.

My apologies to you, Old School, for posting something you already posted.

Spotrac has Aiyuk's dead cap hit at 55 million. But because they voided the guaranteed money it becomes 29 millions. I got this from the AI overview:

The 49ers have voided Brandon Aiyuk's guaranteed money for 2026, which amounts to over $26 million, because he reportedly failed to participate in team activities. This voiding was a response to Aiyuk's lack of communication and participation in meetings, and it clears the way for the 49ers to likely release him at the end of the season. The team will absorb about $29.5 million in dead cap from previously paid bonuses.
I wonder if Aiyuk will challenge that? Obviously he doesn't deserve it. Not being part of the team is a red flag. Me not We guy. But I still hope he challenges and wins because its the 49ers.

I love how he says "Rams fans talk so much Sh$t to us Niner fans Bro." I don't know when our somewhat "good guy" fan base got a backbone, but I absolutely love it! The ultimate sign of fear is when that 49's fan base is that emotionally involved of our demise, and we just keep winning.
They can see the dark times at the end of their tunnel, and they know it . :dizzy: :helmet:
