It is funny how the teams and the billionaire owners look like the victims to some fans in these contract disputes. 90% of us would want to sign for the most possible money if we were a pro athlete. Donald deserves to get paid and the Rams showed with the Austin signing they are willing to lock up guys well before their rookie deals are over.
Yes they extended Austin, but after his first 3 seasons. His 4th year he really only got about a 1m raise (not counting the signing bonus of course) and since he was a top 10 pick his 5th year option would have paid him 12.3m or so, just under the 14m he is getting. That said the money that Donald gets could reasonable double that figure per year. And that is not anywhere near doable for this season with the cap situation as is.
Its about millionaires arguing with billionaires. Hell 1/10th of the numbers they are talking about is more than what most of us will ever earn in a lifetime anyhow. We really shouldn't have a side with it as in who is right and who is wrong.
Bottom line is Donald is under contract for this year and next. And as has been noted above he can be franchised for less than what he wants for probably two years after that 5th year option (as they've done with Johnson who isn't the top player at his position). Is that good for player relations? Heck no, but they hold all the leverage.
