They were a good unit in 2020 as well. In fact if you look at McVay's 5 years so far, 2019 is an anomaly in terms of bad offensive line play. Even if you subtract Blythe then Edwards, Whitworth, Corbett, and Havenstein are all still considered quality linemen.

But you're 100 percent right that Stafford is making a huge difference. Checking out of reads when he sees a blitz, his ability to manipulate the pocket, quicker reads, etc. But feels like more evidence that the Rams offensive line wasn't really "bad" or "average" in 2020 either. They just needed a little help from their QB.
Sorry, but imo they were often bad in 2020. Pocket predictably collapsing on pass play bad. Ongoing need for roll out bad. Not all the time, but too often when we needed pass protection.

In fairness, injuries to Whitworth and Havenstein hurt. Allen wasn't fully recovered and in effect not available as a possible starter. Corbett was new.

But now with the emergence of Allen, the maturing of the line as a whole, and the impact of Carberry -- this is a whole new ball game for the offensive line. And they are stepping up.

It's going to be really fun to watch Stafford getting time to throw. I'm expecting a Sony Michel running game breakout very soon. Then the return of Henderson double whammy.

Not a prediction, just looking at the possibilities should Corbett go and we avoid another outside free agent :

LT) Noteboom, Brewer
LG) Edwards, Hocker
C) Allen, Shelton
RG) Anchrum, Hocker
RT) Havenstein, A. Jackson

9 OL on the depth chart.

2022 Draft :
I'd prioritize a LT type to compete with Brewer as our back-up to Noteboom.
We'd still need to draft a Center/OG somewhere to prepare for Shelton's eventual loss as he becomes a 2023 free agent, as will Edwards as well.

jmo.

No way I let Corbett go for anything. He's far too valuable to the offensive line, able to play all three interior spots and play them well. I'd go so far as to let Noteboom and Allen go. No offense meant to Allen, but Corbett has been better for longer.

When trying to determine why Rams OL is so improved one only needs to ask, ‘what changed from ‘20?

Coach Carberry

Allen as starting OC

Stafford at QB

I submit that all contributed significantly to this dramatic OL improvement.
It's the ultimate team sport. Everything affects everything. Let's add play calling.

It's going to be a tough off-season trying to keep guys from busting our CAP. Fitting Noteboom, Allen, Corbett, Michel & Kenny Young in may become a struggle.
I suspect we'll lose Darius Williams, SJD, DeSean, Obo & maybe even Mundt.

We don't know how much the overall CAP will grow yet so these things are hard to predict, although Amazon renewing TNF and having fans back in the seats will provide a good boost. Extending Stafford, Whitworth's potential retirement, even extending Havenstein could produce big savings for 2022. jmo.

It is. I honestly think that Kenny Young is probably going to be a loss in the offseason. He's a local guy, but that won't prevent him from seeking big money. And I still sign Corbett, even if we lose guys like Noteboom and Allen. I bet we lose all of the players you mentioned as well, but Corbett is a must-sign if we want to keep our O-line mostly intact. I still have faith in Anchrum, mind you; I think he becomes a solid starter in next year's offensive line.

I could definitely see us taking a cornerback or two, two offensive linemen, a running back. definitely two outside linebackers.

Let's hope that we have a large cap this year, but we shall see, and I still imagine quite a few losses.

I say this as someone who thought that Allen was absolute trash after 2019 and wasn't going to believe the preseason hype until I saw it in action.

Between Brian Allen and Austin Corbett, there is no doubt in my mind that it is immeasurably more important to the future of this OL that we re-sign Allen who has shown himself to be an absolute rock in the interior. Of course, I'd like to bring both back and I like Corbett but I think a serviceable OG should be much easier to find than a rock at C.

I totally get what you mean, but I believe that Corbett, who was training at center until Bobby Evans sucked, would be a rock at center as well. You're right that it's easier to find a serviceable guard, but Corbett is so much more than that.

After 3 games and 94 passing attempts Stafford and the oline rank #33 in sacks allowed. (3)
These guys are playing at a very high level.
My hat is off to them. The Buc game they were absolutely outstanding.

I mean, I think you've gotta be pretty happy - not just with previous enigma, Brian Allen! - with how they've all been holding up in pass protection. I mean, we're getting deep pass plays and not even off play-action!

Sure, I'd like to see a little more from the run game but I'm not so sure that isn't a reflection of the backs and not the line right now.

Really impressed with the line given that we have an aging (ancient!) LT, a new C and an inconsistent RT at times.

Absolutely, and also (as someone mentioned earlier) the health of Whitworth and Havenstein. Last year both missed time due to injuries.

The Stafford trickle-down effect. The OL wasn't that bad last year.
Some of you will push back and that's fine (I called it once i looked at Stafford on tape post trade) and he's elevated an already very good offensive roster from 2020.

Everything happens quicker...basically. Everything from decisions to mechanics.

Agreed 100%

But 80% of that is the QB :thumbsup1:

Stafford is playing great, no doubt impacting the line through his play reads and scheme calls, but last time I looked he's not blocking anyone.

The oline deserves a lot of credit. They are enabling straight drop back passing with no play action, not many rollouts, and not much run game. They are giving Stafford time to throw on third down and to go deep at almost any time.

It's a team game. The way the Rams are playing there is and should be plenty of credit to go around.

Corbett & Allen are proven starters who will command a decent payday, ... Noteboom hasn't really done much of anything yet, so he shouldn't be overly costly, and is more likely to receive a shorter contract. With Whitworth's retirement and a Havenstein extension, we could probably sign all 3 guys (Corbett, Allen, Noteboom) to acceptable contracts for not that much more money than the current starting OL is earning now. jmo.
