Sorry, but imo they were often bad in 2020. Pocket predictably collapsing on pass play bad. Ongoing need for roll out bad. Not all the time, but too often when we needed pass protection. They were a good unit in 2020 as well. In fact if you look at McVay's 5 years so far, 2019 is an anomaly in terms of bad offensive line play. Even if you subtract Blythe then Edwards, Whitworth, Corbett, and Havenstein are all still considered quality linemen.
But you're 100 percent right that Stafford is making a huge difference. Checking out of reads when he sees a blitz, his ability to manipulate the pocket, quicker reads, etc. But feels like more evidence that the Rams offensive line wasn't really "bad" or "average" in 2020 either. They just needed a little help from their QB.
In fairness, injuries to Whitworth and Havenstein hurt. Allen wasn't fully recovered and in effect not available as a possible starter. Corbett was new.
But now with the emergence of Allen, the maturing of the line as a whole, and the impact of Carberry -- this is a whole new ball game for the offensive line. And they are stepping up.
It's going to be really fun to watch Stafford getting time to throw. I'm expecting a Sony Michel running game breakout very soon. Then the return of Henderson double whammy.
