Hatfield vs Vikings WRs again oh no...

maybe an offseason of practice with the team has improved his play. remember, he was a rookie and not expected to contribute last season. he got thrown into that game when he wasn't ready. he might be ready this time. did he play ok in preseason?

We've definitely been kicked in the balls of one of our elite units and that has hurt our D. There was a reason that McVay, Wade and Snead went after Talib and Peters. Our CB play last year wasn't up to winning the difficult games.

Now it is what it is, they are out for quite a few games.

I'm happy with Shield's level of play, I just worry about a big hit on him. Hill is good, but again he isn't an elite shut down corner.

What has to happen is that our d-line and pass rushers HAVE to step up their game and get to the QB.

NRC made some HUGE tackles all by his tiny self last season, quite a few were big plays that stopped teams from converting 1st downs.

I'd rather keep nrc in the slot where he excels. Why weaken two positions? It will be the shields and hill show. Hopefully it will be better than the Benny hill show.

The thing that's different this time vs the Vikings, is that neither team is the same as last year. From the "what their saying" thread, fans were derisive and angry about their Oline as Cousins was getting killed. What's different? We have Ndamukong Suh and a healthy Michael Brockers (and Aaron Donald, of course). Our Front is dang good and they should collapse the pocket on Cousins. Just before this game, we were all assured about the deep reserve of DB's, so next men up concerning the replacement of Talib and Peters vs the Vikings...Either that's true or it's not.

Back to the offense, we are different and more explosive than last year. Sammy Watkins non-factor is gone, and a guy like Brandin Cooks is an absolute star. Goff, Gurley, Woods, Kupp, and even Higbeast got in the game vs the Chargers.

The Rams should blow apart the Vikings, and that's a non-homer take.
This. My only worry is that shitbird Zimmer badly out coached McBae in last years matchup (I was there to see it in person, ugh). Hopefully Sean has done his homework and can school that asshole and his squad. Also, this would be a GREAT time for our highly touted defensive front to make hay. Pressure Cousins like I know they can, and it will mask a LOT of the deficiency in the secondary....

So the Rams lost five games last year. One we rested our starters, one the team was just flat (Redskins) and didn't execute well enough, one was a bad game for the offense that we still nearly won (Seahawks), one was a kind of flukey game against the Eagles.

And one we really got it taken to us. From everything we hear about McVay, I wouldn't be surprised if he watched tape on Minnesota the entire offseason (along with Atlanta).

Hopefully Peters sits and gets that long rest heading to Seattle

A calf strain isn't really something you can play through. It just hobbles you.
Now, if you get all hopped up on some sort of pain killer, I suppose it's possible...not sure.
But it's an injury that makes one unable to run.
If it's just some little tweak/cramp, I suppose he could play.
But if it's a legitimate calf strain - I don't see it. He'll tear it if he pushes it.

a question for anyone that knows the answer, how many players can you have on IR with the designation to return? I'm thinking it's 2 but not sure

You're right it's 2. McVay verified that yesterday.

So if Talib goes on IR he'd be one designated to return, it's just that the 2nd one is up in the air so far.

from what I read you don't have to designate a player to return, is this correct?

Correct. McVay also verified that. So they're not designating anyone officially, it's just that he said something like "of course we'd like to bring Tailb back (if he goes on)." So they don't have to choose anyone at this time and can just wait and see.

For Talib they're figuring out what's best for the player, if they could avoid surgery. If not then he may go on IR. They'll be talking with Talib to see what he's comfortable with after the 2nd opinion.

Thank you for that info Classic, we definitely believe Talib will be one but I wonder who the other can be? we have Cooper, Thomas, Obo and soon Talib. do you really bring back any of those 3? Cooper sounds like it's a pipe dream due to the injury he suffered. going to be interesting

Yeah, from what I understand, you can place as many people on IR as you want at any given time. But you can only bring 2 back total off of it during the season. But there's no rule stating you have to say who those 2 will be beforehand.

Exactly . We're heading into what can be considered a soft stretch in the schedule after Thursday . I'd rather weather the storm this week and gear him up against Seattle or Denver

We're lucky we didn't skimp on our CB depth...Sam Shields and Troy Hill can play

Underrated Sam Shields signing set to pay dividends for Rams
By: Cameron DaSilva

usatsi_11264148.jpg

After a remarkable first season under Sean McVay, Les Snead and the Los Angeles Rams front office set their sights on getting even better. Trumaine Johnson and Sammy Watkins were bound to leave, there were aging veterans at edge rusher and Kayvon Webster was facing a lengthy recovery from an Achilles injury.

To make up for those forthcoming losses, the Rams made a handful of high-profile moves. Aqib Talib, Marcus Peters and Brandin Cooks were all acquired via trade, Ndamukong Suh was signed in free agency to fill a hole at nose tackle and Ramik Wilson was brought in to possibly replace Alec Ogletree.

Lost in the shuffle of all those blockbuster moves (Wilson excluded) was the signing of Sam Shields – a player who hadn’t step foot on an NFL field in about two years. Shields suffered multiple concussions in his career with the Packers, but he set out to return this offseason after taking the 2017 season off to recover.

It was a low-risk, underrated move by the Rams, but it’s about to come to the forefront this week. Talib and Peters both suffered leg injuries in Week 3 and could be out for a little while. Peters strained his calf and is day-to-day, while Talib injured his ankle and most likely needs surgery.

That leaves the Rams without their top two cornerbacks, thrusting depth players into prominent roles. Shields will certainly be one of them.

The veteran has played just 48 snaps this season, but he’s made plays when called upon. He has five tackles, one interception and two passes defensed, breaking up a would-be touchdown in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s win over the Chargers. Against the Cardinals, he undercut the receiver’s route and made the interception, returning it 22 yards.

Shields will be one of the starting cornerbacks on Thursday night against the Vikings regardless of whether Peters plays, and that’ll remain the case until Talib returns, whenever that is. McVay has full confidence in Shields’ ability to step up and continue to play at a high level.

“I thought at the end, Sam made a big-time breakup on the third down that ended up leading – or in that last series in the red zone that ended up getting them off the field and then got the ball back for the offense where they were able to run out the clock,” McVay said Monday. “They did some good stuff too. When we had to tighten up, I thought those guys did a nice job.

To be able to step in on short notice, that was something that ultimately, they were their best at the end of the game when we had to be and I thought that was good. But, to have guys that have played a lot of football for us or played a lot of football in this league is extremely important and they’ll definitely get those reps.”

Shields wasn’t even a lock to make the team out of training camp, but now he’s being thrust into a starting role. It’d be unfair to call this “found money” for the Rams because they knew exactly what they were doing when they signed him, but to have him playing at a high level so quickly is a huge development.

Please don't bank of Hatfield to cover Thielen again.... PLEASE!!!!

As long as we don't have MORE injuries he'll be backup at worst. Maybe out there for dime packages. Going to be Troy Hill probably on Thielen assuming Peters doesn't play. Hill is up and down but serviceable. Just pray to the football gods that we're done with major injuries, especially at CB, for a while.
