Ndamukong Suh's low block upsets Minnesota Vikings
  • By Kevin Patra
  • Published: Sept. 9, 2013

Ndamukong Suh's solid opening game, as part of a stout Detroit Lions front that bottled up Adrian Peterson, will be overshadowed by a boneheaded personal-foul penalty.

The defensive tackle was flagged Sunday for a low block on John Sullivan when he dove at the defenseless Minnesota Vikings center from behind after a Lions interception. The play wiped out a defensive touchdown.

Sullivan avoided serious injury, but his teammates weren't happy about the play.

"This is a fraternity. In the NFL, you try and take care of guys," Vikings defensive end Jared Allen said, per the Star Tribune. "Granted, things happen and guys are going to make hits and some things are going to be borderline. But you can't take a dude's legs out from behind on an interception when he's running down the field. To me, there's just no room for that."

Suh is facing NFL discipline for the play, league spokesman Randall Liu told NFL Media on Monday. The league changed the rule during the offseason to protect defenseless players.

Suh, who is under the microscope more than any other NFL player after a history of cheap shots and personal-foul penalties, said he talked with Sullivan after halftime.

"I'm not going for his knees," Suh said. "He knows that. We had a great conversation running out at halftime. And he understood. My aim was his waist to cut him off."

Unfortunately for Suh, he's not going to get the benefit of the doubt on these type of plays.

Regardless of his intent, the play was categorically uncalled for. First and foremost, diving at a player's knee on a change of field is dangerous (the Vikings lost defensive tackle Kevin Williams for this game on a similar hit). Second, aiming at his "waist" is irrelevant. The play was past Suh and there was absolutely no reason to hit Sullivan.

Suh is a fantastic football player. However, plays like Sunday's continue to overshadow the positives and hurt his own team.

I met my wife when I was 38, she was 30 and two years from a divorce. We met at a Memorial Day picnic on May 292005. I moved in on September 19. We married October 24. 5 months. We decided to get married in the middle of August. We have three kids, completely in love, and I couldn't be happier. So my message to you is you know when it's right. You both feel it. If there are any lingering red flags, then don't rush it. Those red flags always turn out to be bigger than you realized.

Met my wife in HS.

Totally crushed on her in 10th grade. She didn't know my name. Spent the entire summer after 10th grade crushing on her HARD listening to Janet Jackson's "Let's wait awhile"...

Became aware of one another in 11th grade because we were in choir together. Crush waned a bit.

She met my sister in 12th grade and was friends with my sister and mom. We became friends. I wouldn't ask her out because she was "too much". Kinda hyper. Not really sure how to put it. I was very chill and she was very...loud. Freaked me out.

I'll never forget it. I was sitting in my living room in Arcadia, CA (I'd moved in with my step-dad after HS in Santa Monica) and was bored out of my damned mind. I literally called everyone in my day planner (remember those?). She was the ONLY person to call me back. Not even my closest homies called me back until like a week later.

So I asked her out. On our first date, she tells me, "we're gonna get married, we're gonna have kids, the first one's gonna be a boy and he's gonna be named Derek" I'm not sure I want a second date and she had our whole lives planned.

Well, that second date was a date for the ages and well...she was right.

I knew right away that she was the one for me. I asked her to marry me when I was still 18...on her 19th birthday. I think I spent $40 on her engagement ring...her birth stone in a very plain white gold setting.

And, btw, she must be psychic because we did get married, we've had 5 kids, our first was a boy and we named him Derek.

We've been together 31 years and married 28 (I insisted on being 21 when we got married because I didn't want any of the kids saying, "well, YOU GUYS weren't 21...). We've only been with each other and we're still crazy in love.

I'm super lucky because we still give each other "the utz"... that feeling in the pit of the stomach...like on a first date or before that first time with someone special. Still. It's pretty amazing.

Hope everyone can have what we have. Make the leap as soon as you know. It's worth it.

If he takes the Jets' offer, he's made the decision that as much as he hates winning, he'd rather build his wealth for life after football than end a winner.

If he takes the Rams' offer, he's making winning more of a priority.

What I find funny is that with a ring, his post football career can be substantially greater. Anyone think Terrell Davis would be as visible as he is without those rings??? He certainly wouldn't be in the HoF.

I honestly think that the most aggregate money over time as well as the best chance to win is with the Rams.

But, it's hard to turn down big money especially in a profession where each play can be your last.

I get that, but when he signs with the Jets or any other non-Rams/Saints team, it’s not out of the question they’d be a playoff team next year either
Okay I see .I thought you were suggesting that suh didn't make us a contender . You're right, one right move and teams like New Orleans are great choices

On a side note, this “Super Bowl contending team” is nonsense too. The eagles weren’t a SB contender this time last year either

Saints are the only team besides the Rams who can win their division.

No way Titans take their division with the Texans getting back JJ Watt and their rookie QB coming back healthy.

NO WAY the Jets beat the Pats. Suh HAS to know that. The Pats are gonna stay on top of that division until Brady leaves.

So, if Suh goes with Jets or Titans, it's an admission that money was at least as important as winning and as much as he hates not making the playoffs or being one and done, his future "empire" is more important than ending a winner.

If Suh goes to the Rams or Saints, he's trying to end a winner.

The Saints don't have the cap space, so they'd be dumping contracts left and right to fit him in and does Suh want to go to a team dumping key players?

I see it as Jets or Rams.

Jets for money.

Rams for ring.

Not sure how else it could go. Jets take Titans out of mix because their offer is that much bigger, apparently.

you are presuming Teddy B. is finished, correct? What if he's not???

Bridgewater hasn't played basically in two seasons, and while looking vaguely promising, was not a sure fire star even then. His yard per attempt was not great, and I doubt two years off is going to prepare him for greater productivity. He did get in one game last year - 2 attempts, no completions, one interception, so nothing to shake off the rust.

Maybe someday he'll return, but at this stage if he returns to the level of his non-spectacular first two seasons the Jets would have to feel lucky.

The only time JJ Watt is healthy is the off season. By game 4 he'll be back on the bench nursing an injury.

Their QB might not be any different, but we don't have the data to know one way or the other right now.

JJ Watt is overtraining. Hopefully, someone gets in his ear and gets him straight.

Deshaun Watson was as dynamic a rookie QB as we've seen since Vick? But with better QB skills. Crazy dynamic. If he stays healthy, I think the entire season for the NFL is different.

If they can focus on keeping Watt healthy with Jadaveon Clowney finally blowing up... they will really be dangerous.

Honestly, I think the Texans will be the most improved team this year.

I don't get the whole, hasn't played in 2 years....at what, 25? 26? Hasn't done anything but try and get ready to throw a ball and run around....

Never said he was Dan Marino....he's decent....Nothing special....sound familiar???

I wouldn't think the Jets would sign a guy for....what they give him? $10 million....15??? Well, they wouldn't sign him if they didn't think he could play....at all

Trust me...never liked Teddy outta college...Just too damn skinny....yep, I'm like that...football players should LOOK like football players...but he proved he was decent...and has a will to win. I wouldn't doubt he's the Jets starter ATM.

His contract with the jets is $6 mil with a $500k signing bonus and $1M im guarantees.

Compare that to the contract they have McCown which is for $10 mil and it’s all guaranteed and that should tell you who they expect the starter to be.

“He’s decent....nothing special...sound familiar?”

For the love of god tell me you’re not insinuating what I think you are lol

Suh and Donald both under contract combined will be around 30 million a year for 2 D line spots. That is a lot of cap money when you have 20 more starters and then back ups to pay.

It will only be for a year or two though. Not long term. Easily manageable with a QB on his rookie deal.

As most know, a lot of what makes a QB effective is being able to function at NFL speeds. We see a learning curve routinely with rookies. I have a hard time believing that somebody who was not excellent at that anyway is not going to have a fresh learning curve against live competition getting back to speed. He might end up being okay, but even if he returns to his old level - not a sure thing - he's not really an elite QB. He would have to improve considerably for that.
