If you insist :) He's not going to play the first 2 weeks IMO. And we can't upgrade every position every year let alone every other year. Still so much time spent on the 3rd string (2nd string for 2 weeks OMG) QB that should never see the field.

And again there isn't a team out there barring a crazy fluke that will succeed with their 3rd string QB. And you want a young guy to groom? Great what round are we taking one? Oh McVay tried that and he wanted Bennett. I get you want to cut the guy but maybe just maybe let him play and let McVay make the decision. As some have pointed out, including people that know more about QB's than any of us especially me, he did have some good last weekend. Lets see how the kid reacts after his first game in a year. If he's shit the rest of the year then next year we'll draft somebody. But right now there's nobody out there that I'm aware of that would upgrade the QB3 spot and win us games.
I would agree if we had a 25 yr old star QB as a starter. Hell, even a 32 yr old starter, but that's not the case with this franchise. He will turn 37 in February. It would be a huge plus if they had a young player, with starting potential, who could learn right now under Stafford.

Still strange to see so much time and effort thrown in to a 3rd string QB to me. If any 3rd string QB ends up playing extended periods of time that team is doomed. Don't care what team it is.
Kind of an odd take
Basically anyone who steps on the field tonight for the Rams is 3rd string material, so why is talking QB off limits?
That said QB play in pre-season will always command the most attention because it's likely (hopefully) the most playing they'll get this year

36 year old starter who has missed significant playing time 2 of the last 5 seasons and has already had an injury scare this pre-season. Yeah I think conversation about back up QB is quite warranted

Yep, and when you look at the roster, they have youth almost everywhere. Lots of promise, so you would hate for this new core group to be held back by the QB position when they are in their prime at 26, 27, & 28 yrs of age in just a few yrs from now.

Said young player doesn't have to be on the roster right now. You are worrying about a problem that doesn't exist right now and you're creating that in your own mind. We have a #2 that has had success as a starter but you're spending your time worrying about the #3 who once again should never see the field. If McVay doesn't like what he sees the rest of the preseason then next year we will address QB3 who might end up being QB2 if we don't retain JG or add another vet which both are likely to happen. And if Stafford does retire after this year or gets hurt or whatever we likely trade for somebody or sign a free agent.

You're creating an issue that is such a low priority about a guy who shouldn't ever see the field after the preseason.

I know that Brett Favre never groomed Aaron Rodgers and I haven't heard glowing praise from Love about Rodger's grooming techniques. It seems to me, aside from the occasional unicorn, a QB is what he is and an established #1 QB can do little to overhaul a kid with suspect arm strength, poor spatial awareness and little ability to "read" defenses to find option #2, #3, or #4.

Sorry, I have little faith in sticking a kid behind Matthew Stafford to learn and a#1 quality QB will emerge. Unless that kid was picked high in the 1st round.

Rodger’s didn’t groom Love, and Favre didn’t groom Rodgers. The point is that the talent can sit behind the HOF’r and learn how to do things right with absolutely zero pressure outside of learning and improving yourself constantly.

A top 10 pick that has to start right away for a shit franchise and team with shit talent is a different story.

Drafting a top talented QB to groom behind Stafford is the right answer now matter how you cut it.

I guess you didnt hear that he is not eligible to play in the 1st 2 games so yeah for the opener, Stetson Bennett is the backup.
Just a thought, but if you dont understand why so much conversation about Bennett, then its incredibly odd you would decided to enter a thread about him. There are plenty of threads

New England drafted a kid in the 6th rd to sit behind Bledsoe... I think it might have worked out.

We are saying the same thing (top talented QB = 1st round talent). Getting a 6th rounder is probably not gonna benefit sitting behind a franchise QB so that he becomes a bonafide starting QB when the starter retires/leaves. The veteran may be able to help the lesser QB in learning how to prepare like a pro....

Yeah, now name 10 more like that.
I referenced a QB like that as being like a unicorn (rare as hen's teeth)
