Okay, some cold hard facts.
Since 2001, iirc, virtually ALL of the growth of the NFL has come from the increase in FEMALE fans.
As in, the male NFL fanbase has remained stagnant. So, all these increases in salary cap due to increased viewership, etc... is almost entirely due to more women watching.
Period.
Now, I realize it's gonna be a surprise to some folks, but women get harassed... a lot. Most attempts don't even register with a lot of women because, well, it happens so damned often.
However, when it comes to their avocation, in this case, watching some good ol' American football!, the last thing they want is to have a player on the field be a guy that did something to someone that was done to them or a family member or a friend or female coworker.
It's easy to see how males and females would see the Ray Rice video differently...or even what is a fan's reaction of the allegation, meaning...do they buy tickets, gear, Sunday Ticket or licensed stuff or watch after this stuff comes out?
Well...they don't. Viewership drops when the NFL bungles stuff like this. And most of that drop is from women who aren't interested in old, rich, white dudes trying to mansplain why stuff they know isn't okay is somehow okay because...well...the guy is a talented player or whatever.
So, things ARE going to be different going forward because the NFL courted the female audience and got it... and they don't think the same as guys do about a number of things and when they vote with their dollars, just like any other group, it's gonna get that corporation's attention.
It's gonna be okay. Thing is, we have to share the NFL and how women see things matters now.
And let's not kid ourselves, it really never mattered much before. But it does now. That's the new reality.
In this case, Winston has a bevy of lawyers so they'll figure it out. We're not talking about a single dad working as a picker at an Amazon Warehouse who's gonna have limited means to get to work let alone fight any allegation of any kind. He's gonna be fine.
He might even lose a sponsor or two. Hey, corporations, whaddaya gonna do?
