Good points.

So, to some, we release Wagner and its a rebuild?
Or, to others, when a true front line player gets released or traded (Ramsey) then for sure it's a rebuild?

We know McVay/Snead rebuilt McVay's first year here, bringing in Whitworth and Sullivan, Watkins and Robey-Coleman. 11-5 and playoffs first the first time in 12 years.
But by those parameters above (Wagner and probably others leaving), he rebuilt his second year. Bringing in Talib, Peters and Cooks, letting Watkins, TruJo, Quinn, Ogletree and Tavon Austin go. 13-3 and Superbowl appearance!!!!
........his third year, letting Saffold and Sullivan go, bringing in Matthews, Weddle and signing Fowler (acquired in mid 2018); Mid season, trading away Peters and Talib, trading for Corbett and Ramsey. 9-7
........his 4th letting Fowler, Littleton, Matthews, Gurley, Robey-Coleman and Zuerlein go, trading Cooks, bringing in Leonard Floyd and A'Shawn Robinson; 10-6, 1-1 in postseason
........his 5th letting Everett, Hill and Johnson go, trading Goff and Brockers and bringing Stafford and DJax in. 12-5 SB Champs!!!!
.....and his 6th losing Whitworth to retirement, letting Corbett, SJD, Von Miller, DWill, Hekker and Obo walk, trading away Woods, trading for Hill, signing Robinson and Bobby Wagner. 5-12.

Injuries hampered the rebuild in 2019 and devasted it in 2022. Now beginning his 7th season there are going to be some more changes.. Another rebuild!!! Like every other year since he's been here. Big name guys leaving, some coming in. Assistant coaches being poached and fired, new ones coming in. It's the NFL. If you ain't trying to rebuild to some degree every year, you aren't looking out for your best interests.

Sometimes you rebuild and still need some help, which they've not hesitated to acquire mid season. Fowler, Ramsey, Corbett, Miller, OBJ, etc.

I suppose I could be considered one of the "optimists". But I think, looking over the comings and goings the last 6 years, it's not like I don't have good reason to be one.
My definition of a rebuild (even if you’re not firing and replacing the HC and GM) is you get rid of and replace your core players and most of the entire roster. McVay’s Rams have had one rebuild when he got hired in ‘17. Almost a complete overhaul in 2 off season’s.

What they’ve been doing since then is working to improve and evolve the roster while building around a core set of guys.

I would also define a team like Arizona is in a full rebuild simply because they replaced the GM and HC. A few core guys will still be there this year but nevertheless it’s a rebuild.

The Rams haven’t rebuilt in six years.

Exactly.

You can't call releasing Wagner (and possibly trading or releasing other players) a rebuild unless you classify every other year a rebuild. So it's semantics or individual definitions of "rebuild". Like you I believe 2017 was a rebuild and the rest "tweaking".

But some fans see Wagner's release and the Ramsey rumor, coupled with Schefter's take on Wagner wants to win as "oh shit, we're in a rebuild because Wagner doesn't think we can win". Like I said SEATTLE won the year after releasing him and their roster ain't close to the Rams!

Was Wagner’s release a surprise to you?

I am not singling you out PA, just the question fits off your post.

For me the release was a surprise. I think that makes a person think “oh thats a deeper cut than expected”. And that probably makes a mind wander to “rebuild”.

I don’t think we are in rebuild, but I can’t say its not a viable strategy. Only McVay knows if he has the cards.

What does "Mutually agreed to part ways" mean?
The Rams said, "The Turk wants to see you in his office, and bring your play book"
And Wags said, "Ok"

Also, if he's designated as a Post June 1 cut, then why wouldnt his salary of 7.5 mill become guaranteed since that happens 3/19?

Rams: Sorry Wagz, no one took Morris off of our hands and we're stuck with him.
Wagz: Let's say, mutually agreed.

I'm too lazy to post it, but there was an article out where Wagner was great against the run but played poorly more often than not in coverage. Maybe we want someone that can cover backs out of the backfield better due to the league being more pass happy?

I think we all knew when we read his contract numbers, he wasn't here for 5 years. Probably only 2. And you're not gonna create much cap space releasing/renegotiating guys with small deals. I actually expected they'd ask some of the top 10 guys in salary, Wagner being one of them. So I'm surprised he wasn't asked to redo his deal....and for all I know this may be the result of him saying "no"......ergo "mutual"....."we weren't paying him this and he didn't want to take that". He's certainly not worth a 12.5 mil cap hit in year 2. So they got him for 1 yr at a cost of 10 mil by releasing him. If you read his contract only 10 mil was guaranteed at signing and the other 10 mil in guarantees kicked in when being on the roster the third day of new league year. He also had a clause....and this item is probably why he's gone.....if he was all pro or played 90 % of 2022-23 snaps he could void the last 3 years of his deal. So why renegotiate if he could be free a year early? He already got 10 mil.

Wagner was average to bad in coverage so I think the Rams are fine with him moving on. That cap can be better spent elsewhere on the roster.

Of course they probably weren't happy with him in coverage, Raheem needs 11 dudes in coverage to have a fighting chance.

Wagner's coverage rating was 77.9 last year.

The off-season doomsday crowd has started early this year after a 5 win season :laugh3:

Nevermind all of our best players didn’t play and the 3rd string OL’ers did play.
Hell Mojo, I started back on June 17th,2022 way before the training Camp began, where have you been.....as usual ignoring my post as much as possible I presume.

I overestimated Ram's ability to win & was only off by 5 games but wrong as normal.

I thought he played well for us last year, but my question is why doesn't he think he can win with the Rams?
He saw all the injuries like we did. Doesn't he think we can get healthy and turn it around like we do?

Likely answer is that Wagner thought Rams have too many holes to fill to be a contender. Now we have another, very big hole.

Exactly. Media fucks are gullible man. This is the Rams letting the vet have his dignity as they show him the door.

And I am fine with it. He played his ass off for us but Jones won't see the field outside of early downs if they keep Wags and this saves cap.

By the way jury is out on Jones so hope they know what they are doing. Love his character and intensity but we need consistent run fits from him with maybe some anticipation. So he needs to raise that bar a lot.
