I really think Stafford is leaning toward retiring.
He would be foolish not to consider it.
The Rams would be foolish not to try to cover themselves. Baker's time here is IMO an extended tryout. There is no other reason to rush his start when they have an extended week coming up. What would one more loss mean? No, this whole thing smells of desperation. I thought at
best Matt would be year to year. But now I'm really leaning toward the Rams knowing the probability of his retirement is high.
Baker's skillset is different and McVay must make changes to his scheme. I think if he has a successful year then at the very least he will be signed as an expensive backup for one year. If Baker is successful then IMO McVay has his new QB if Stafford if and when Stafford retires.
Let's face it, the Raiders are a decent team but hardly a playoff caliber one. The Rams have the Packers, Broncos, Chargers, and Seahawks left on the schedule. Not exactly a meat grinder but enough to give the Rams a look at who they actually have in Baker. I've never been a Baker Mayfield fan. But if he can play well in McVay's scheme I will support him as the Ram's QB especially since he didn't cost them any picks. Picking in the top half of the second round, they should be in a good position to get a good edge rusher either in that round or trading up into the first round. Guys like Chandler Jones and Cameron Jordan were taken with picks in the 20s.
After Aker's fumble, I think the Rams will use their third round pick on a RB. I also think they will grab at least one OG off the vet FA list.
Havenstein's inability to handle speed and power was on full display. Chandler Jones is not a really fast rusher, but he made Rob look like a swinging door. Rob has always struggled with speed. There is no doubt that the Rams will exercise their "contractual out" year in 2024 if not next year. With Noteboom and Jackson, they have their OTs of the future.
It's clear that Skura sucks as much as he always had. Time for Thomas, as he can't play worse and they have 10 days in getting him ready. Thomas projects as a RG or emergency RT. Put him in at RG and slide Shelton over to LG. That IMO will help to plug that leaky OL. If he can play they then have their new OL with Noteboom, Jackson, Shelton, Allen, Bruss, Havenstein (one more year max), and Thomas. I watched him play at San Diego State and he looked pretty good at RT. But he would need to move inside to really play at the NFL level. IMO it's time to play him before Skura gets another QB killed.
